  1. 2014-2015 Around the league thread

It's a fantastic microcosm of everything one could dislike in NYC. Now where does Dolan take his big top circus of mediocrity next? A lot can change in a decade, but I can't see them finding a spot in Manhattan unless the post office across the street becomes available.
  2. 2014-2015 Around the league thread

The Hudson River Rail Tunnels are in dire need of construction -- between their age & damages from Sandy that still haven't been repaired -- and those head directly into Penn. I think it's reported that those tunnels are only serviceable for another decade or so, as well. So something is going to have to be done with train service into Penn at some point. Whatever happens, it's going to be quite the clusterfvck

CIty wouldn't let them renew their lease beyond 10 years. Penn Station badly needs an upgrade, and there's really no way to keep MSG functioning if they do choose to go to work on the terminal. It seems like those 2 thoughts are connected Regardless of how I feel about either the team or the building, Penn needs the work done and I hope that takes priority over the world's most self-aggrandizing arena. edit: here's a link http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/25/nyregion/madison-square-garden-is-told-to-move.html?_r=0

A billion dollars invested into that underwhelming monument to irrelevant sports history just makes it absolutely hilarious that they're going to be sent packing in less than a decade.
  5. GDT: Blues at Devils

Just checked war-on-ice, and they match up http://war-on-ice.com/game4.html?seasongcode=2014201520173 They're 5v5 even strength faceoffs only on Todd Cordell's chart.
  6. 2014-2015 Lineup Thread

I think at least 1, and most likely 2 of Larsson/Severson/Merrill/Gelinas need to show that they're ready to be cemented into a top 4 role before it would even be considered to take Salvador out of the lineup. And that's almost impossible at their young ages. I can't think of many (if any) coaches in this league who would be comfortable with 4 kids holding the blueline. Until then, the best we can hope for is a steady reduction in TOI (which seems to be the case).
  7. Didn't Fraser sign an AHL deal? I think his only relevance (if he has any) might be for any defensemen that might be moved out of Albany, for any number of reasons.
  8. Josefson has been getting in game promotions to the top 9 while also getting a bump up in TOI - this includes nearly 2 minutes of PK time against Columbus. Meanwhile, Ruutu has been getting the least amount of minutes with no special teams time for several games running. He played even less than Boucher on Saturday. I think he's on the brink being scratched regardless of who comes back into the lineup.
  9. DeBoer "Firing Watch" Thread

DeBoer also said he passed along the shootout responsibilities to assistant coach Foligno From TG: Actually, DeBoer is relying on assistant coach Mike Foligno to suggest the shooters this season. Devils center Patrik Elias had been in DeBoer’s ear for a while, however, to give Josefson a chance. After all, Josefson scored one of the Devils’ four shootout goals last season – yes, they scored only four on 45 attempts – and he had been impressive in practices, too. “This year, Mike Foligno down on the bench has kind of taken the lead role in that,” DeBoer explained. “So, he was kind of throwing names by me and, like I said, Patrik Elias jumped in and was throwing Jo’s name in there. I think because Jo’s been good in practices, I think it was an easy pick and to his credit, under a lot of pressure, he went in and made a great play.” http://fireandice.northjersey.com/fire-ice-1.174987/josefson-schneider-come-through-as-devils-finally-end-shootout-losing-streak-with-2-1-win-over-jets-1.1123325
  10. DeBoer "Firing Watch" Thread

I see this a lot, but it's not really close to true. Last season, he used a total of 14 shooters over 13 shootouts. All listed here: http://www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.htm?fetchKey=20142NJDSASALL&sort=shotsTaken&viewName=shootouts Only Elias was selected for more than 1/2 the shootouts (8 times), and at least 2 of those were in the later rounds of unending attempts (the 6 rounder against NYI and the 9 rounder against Buffalo, off the top of my head). The guys at the top of the attempts list are guys have some of the better career success rates on the team, so it's not illogical to try and rely on them to break the slump.
  11. What is wrong with our fanbase

I'm part of that crowd, too. I'm 28 and early 2000's me was cruising along as a Yankees, Devils and Nets fan. So much so that I kind of expected a rough patch to come along because things were going TOO well. That helped soften the blow a little. I'm naturally a cynical person, but I trained myself to be a glass half full kind of fan. Otherwise watching sports can feel too much like a chore when things aren't going well.
  12. What is wrong with our fanbase

Couple that with a very large 30 & younger crowd who aren't used to the Devils losing, and losing this much. There was always an expectation (bordering on entitlement) of winning. The Devils were like a safety blanket for so long, no matter how bad your other teams were faring.
  13. DeBoer "Firing Watch" Thread

If this loss broke your faith enough that you'd think Oates would be a better fit here than DeBoer, you might want to read through this from a Caps blog last season: http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2014/04/02/fire-adam-oates-yes-or-yes-or-no-but-cmon-yes/ I'm not in favor of firing the PDB, but if there is a better option out there that can maximize the returns on what is essentially an average to somewhat mediocre forward group... I'll take it. Oates is not that guy, though.
  14. GDT: New Jersey Devils @ Pittsburg Penguins 7PM MSG

Ruutu was the one to sit for Brunner to come into the lineup and he's getting the least minutes out of the 4th liners. I wouldn't be too surprised to see Ruutu taken out over Josefson. That's another improvement this season (despite some poor results) - when the Devils were spinning their wheels last season, they weren't finding ways to gain any ground in the standings. Much like last year, the majority of the East is struggling to start. Not throwing away too many points and keeping pace is good if they can find a way to get their act together.
  15. GDT: New Jersey Devils @ Pittsburg Penguins 7PM MSG

I think that's best. There's no positive takeaways from this game, and that in itself kind of makes it easier to get over. Zajac is not always going to play that bad, Schneider is a better goalie than we've seen this season, and even if the penalty kill isn't great - it will improve. The current clip the Devils are running at on PK is on par with the literal worst PK in post-expansion NHL (79-80 LA Kings). This current edition of the Devils isn't as great as its 3-0 start, but there is still a lot of room to improve in areas that are fairly certain to do so. I'm interested to see how the team reacts to this 1-3-2 slide -- from the players to the coach to the GM. With the schedule about to pick up, at the very least, I'd like to see Kinkaid come up.
