IF Kovy were to ever have a change of heart and want to play in the NHL again, would he still be NJ Devils property?

yes, we would retain his rights, but only if all 30 teams agreed to him returning, or he sat out an entire year of hockey and returned, either way, he is still ours

Until he is 35.   Then the next season afterwards he is a UFA.   But it's a mess and a unique case.   Apparently if he returns (before he is a 35 year old UFA) and is cleared the Devils have to give him a "fair offer".    Which I guess would be like a qualifier, but no one knows what "fair" actually means.   Which means arbitrators would probably have to be involved if the two sides did not agree.   And if he didn't want to play for the Devils at all, after they extended the "fair" offer, he would have to be traded.   But then, you can't trade him wherever you want, because that team has to be able to sign him... otherwise, why would they make the trade?   So it's not really full value rights.    He could walk in, call his shot and basically force a trade to that team, who then would have the upper hand in trade negotiations.

Basically, for the sake of everyone involved, he better scrap the 3 year plan or it's going to be a debacle.   I'm pretty sure he had no idea what he signed when he signed it.    They're going to need a "flaky player leave clause" in the next CBA.

I think they should just say..."if a player signs a 15 year contract, and retires after 3 years, he cant return to the NHL till the term in that contract has past (12 more years)

then the player would really have to think long and hard about signing a contract like that, or retiring from a contract like that.

He's coming back.   He's not going to be treated like a god there forever, and if you read up about him in Kazan during the other lockout, he turned into a whiny bitch pretty quickly.    He's just a flake, something will piss him off over there and he'll come back.
