They are, but the great equalizer is always goaltending. And a lot of countries have excellent goaltenders, while Canada is really lacking. They would easily trade goalies with US, Sweden, and Finland, and you can make a case that Bobrovsky is better than anyone they could have starting.

Man, throw in Elias and Jagr (Zids?) for Czech and we've still only got five potential Olympians so far. Which is probably a good thing, a well-rested team heading into the stretch run may be necessary.

I'm glad they didn't. I think he really needs to accept that his elite days are gone. And I say that as a huge fan.

 

I find Gibson to be an interesting invite for team USA. Quick has got to the man, and my guess is Crawford backing and Anderson and Schneider fighting for 3rd. I wonder if they try to rekindle Miller's magic from 2010.

Crawford is Canadian. I think Anderson's play this season will dictate if he is on the team. He was left off the 2010 team just because it was known he wouldn't start, and they wanted to give a younger goalie experience. I think you could see the same thing this time , if he isn't challenging for the job. But if he plays like he did last season, he has to be a lock for the team.

Murray is unsigned but I think Grossmann is equal to Larsson at this juncture in their careers.  US has already said that they are not skating at their camp.

Haha, my mistake, I meant Howard instead of Crawford. I was comparing Canada and the US in goal and confused myself.

Not surprised that Greene or Fayne didn't get an invite but I think Greene deserved it. Especially over someone like DeKeyser who hardly has NHL experience and no national team experience. Greene doesn't have much national team experience but 6 WC games is something at least.

I agree 100%. Larsson's still very young and I think Tallinder and the other Swedes are more suited for this at this moment in time.

Interesting to see the US invited Jones, Trouba, Galchenyuk, and Gibson. Long shots to make it but I think it's great since those 4 have won Gold for the US at multiple age levels in recent years. Also, Jones, Trouba, and Galchenyuk are still elgible for the WJC.

For Finland, I really think Barkov is going to make that team and contribute.

It might have been a long shot, but I was really hoping Carter would get a look on the fourth line. Speed, can kill penalties, and is just such a scrappy player. Oh well

Hopefully, I like Larsson and think he can be an impact 2 way player but I understand not inviting him to the national camp based on where he was at when we last saw him play.  He has a good chance to play on the next 3 or 4 Olympic teams after this one.

Mainly because people view him as not being able to win the big games in the NHL. I know he won the gold in 2010, and that was a huge win for him. But even if you watch that, Miller outplayed him big time. Luongo's defense helped him on some real terrible rebounds. He was a big part of it, but that was a team win.

 

He got a reputation as a 'choke artist' when he was on some Vancouver teams that collapsed in the playoffs, and the blame shouldn't all go on him at all. But that's the way it goes in hockey. People are always looking for one specific guy to make the hero or goat.

Gustaffson has 4 more years of experience than Larsson and likely won't make their team. 

 

Murray is a veteran that likely won't make the team.  Murray was also on the last Olympic team so may be a bit of a legacy invite.

 

Point is, those guys have experience and a track record.  If Larsson was 20 and destroying the leagues he was playing in then he'd probably be invited.  Instead Larsson is 20 and like most 20 year olds suffers with inconsistency, he's ranged from looking pretty good to looking awful at times. 

 

If I'm putting together a team for a short tournament I can't gamble on getting pretty good when the downside is I may get awful, not when I have more proven and consistent commodities I can look at.
