MSG Being Knocked Down in 10 years?

167 posts in this topic

Geez, what did White Castle do to you? :P

The one on Route 1 near Menlo Park Mall in Edison. Never, ever, ever again. Got really sick off of it, and the burgers weren't even worth the illness. Pretty sure it shut me off to all White Castle ever. A friend desperately wanted it last week and I got some rubbery chicken sandwich thing because I couldn't stomach the idea of eating a burger there.

(I should not this terrible experience was when I was like 12, and has stuck with me for almost 20 years now.)

There's a place in Florida that makes a mac and cheese burger. I might have to make a pilgrimage.

-  In and Out is a special little slice of heaven.  Animal style.  Oh man, so good.

Worst burger I ever had

Someone's been watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

Love that show. They actually came to my hometown Jefferson Diner a few years ago which was awesome. Never fails to make me hungry.

The current Penn Station might not be pretty, but it serves its purpose.  To try to re-create the old Penn Station like it used to be is foolish and a clear battle with nostalgic preservationists against an arena that is pretty much funneling tons of money in that area.  The old Penn Station was barely used and a complete dump before it was knocked down to make way for MSG.

I mean are there calls for the original Waldorf-Astoria hotel to be rebuilt in its original location?  Nope.  I guess part of it has to do do with the Empire State Building currently occupying that space yet no one is calling for that to be demolished to have the hotel rebuilt.

For MSG it is a bunch of loony, nostalgic idiots whose only beef against MSG is that it is "ugly" when in fact it serves its purpose quite well and creates business in the area.

Half a million people use Penn Station everyday. It's overcrowded and should be overhauled. The timing of this is peculiar. Why didn't city officials propose this before Dolan's renovation? Personally, MSG has lost its luster. The renovation has only worsened the atmosphere while accompanying big shots. A new building makes more sense. All those dollars wasted.

You have to build up a tolerance to Dub-C.  The first time you eat it, it lays siege to your digestive system, but with each subsequent endeavor, your digestive system begins to prove its worth and Dub-C starts to gradually respect its courage and valor until eventually Dub-C and your digestive system become noble companions.

My buddies and I used to go to that same location pretty often when we were in college.  My personal record is 15 cheeseburgers, half a crave case, though I had to use the bathroom at approximately burger 11 before I went back and finished.  I graduated three and a half years ago though and I think I've only eaten there once or twice since then.  My tolerance is probably back down to zero.

I'm sure they'll find another spot in Manhatten to house the new msg.  Doubt they would move it to another borough, but wouldn't be shocked. Lundquist could become the "King of Queens".

Wonder if they're working on his new contract? I think he'll get an 8 yr. deal

I went to a Cheeburger Cheeburger once and I thought it sucked, but I wonder if it was that particular Cheeburger Cheeburger (in Flemington) that sucked.  My uncle tried it once and warned me, but I took my wife and daughter anyway...sadly, turned out he was 100% right.  That location closed down a while ago...Flemington is a burger overkill area anyway...there's a Five Guys, a 25 Burgers (used to be a Pizza Hut), a Wendy's, a McDonald's, a TGIF, a Chili's, and not too far up the road, a Sonic.  There's also a BK that's been closed and "under renovation" for three years, but it doesn't look like anything's really being done with it.  I'm guessing Cheeburger Cheeburger didn't make it there for a reason.

Remember "Bangers" on 31?   Not sure if that's Wendy's there now or not (or was it KFC)?   Talk about expensive burgers.   They banged themselves right out of business.

Don't know "Bangers".  When were they in biz?

BTW KFC in Flemington closed some time ago, and was starting to look like a "Life After People" episode (think neglect and a whole lot of overgrowth).  Then one day, I was driving by and the lights inside were on.  Some time after that, the brush was cut away, and new signs were put up:  "CHICKEN ADDICTION".  On Saturday, I drove by it on my way to a friend's house, and it's now open for business.  It's not a chain, which makes me want to give it a try out of principle.  Would love to see a mom-and-popper have some success.

I'll have to check it out.   That KFC was awful--never had what you wanted ready and had to wait for 15 minutes for every order.

Bangers went out of business around 2000.   Funny enough, right after NJ Magazine voted them one of the best burgers in NJ.   But the prices were insanely high at the time as they were slightly ahead of the "designer burger" crave that ensued.

I can't believe there's a thread about burgers and no one has mentioned Rossi's. Everyone, hop in the bus. We're going to Trenton.

Rossi's is a divey bar in a non-descript Trenton neighborhood with burgers so good you'll slap your mother. It's one of those mom & pop kind of places like Mariner's Cove that, once you've been there, you want to tell everyone about it and never get an omelette/burger from anyplace else.

Sounds awesome. How safe is the surrounding area? I have a few friends at TCNJ, sounds like a good place to hit.

Surprised no one has mentioned Fuddruckers.  It was originally Freddy Fuddruckers.  They have a huge selection of burgers and they also have some other good food.  Burgers are from 1/3 to 1 pound.  It is your choice.  I first went to one way up on Route 23N before they got rid of most of the circles.  Today there is one on Rt 22 W in Bridgewater.  I enjoy that place. :)  Check out the menu.

Very solid and kinda underrated.  I go to the one on rt22 in Bridgewater every now and then.

How's Fuddruckers stack up against Red Robin?

Hmmm good question.  The only Red Robin I have been to is the one in South Plainfield on or near Hadley.

I think while they are kinda different, I think I enjoy them both equally.  They both have unlimited fries and pricing is in the same ballpark.  The main difference is that at Fuddruckers you do not have to leave a tip as they are counter service while at Red Robin you do.

Someone's been watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

Why anyone watches that show is beyond me. Guy's a complete hack. Goin' ter flavortown. Yeah, ok, sure you are. The NYT review of his Times Square restaurant was golden. The critic ripped the place to shreds. I also hate his sunglasses that I guess protect the eyes he has behind his head and his stupid dyed soul patch. Him and Anne Burrelle(sp?) should have a kid though. Might stab her on the way out with it's spiky blonde hair.

I just don't see how there's enough diners and hole in the wall places to do a show for this long. I don't need to constantly watch him eat ribs, hot dogs, sausage, pie and crap OVER AND OVER AND OVER. It's BORING. Anybody with 2 brain cells to rub together can make a half decent burger and put some weird crap on top to make it unique. I swear, every time I see peanut butter put on a burger, I die a little inside. You can't just do whatever the hell you want. There's some rules here.

Guy Fieri is just in it for the $$$$ and clearly has 0 skills as a cook. I once saw him on his show, in flip flops, in a kitchen. What kind of moron wears open toe shoes in a kitchen? Isn't he supposed to be a chef?

For me, Anthony Bourdain is pretty much the only tolerable TV chef out there. I like that Giada chick, but that's only because I think she's kinda hot, despite her oversized head. I think it might be the fact that when she physically puts the food into her mouth with the music, the camera, the way she makes the "yum" sound, it all just seems like a porno to me, lol. Is this a little too much info?

Back on topic:

Fuddruckers is good, been going there since I was a little kid, used to stop there all the time after practice or a game at BSA or Chimney Rock. Still go there every once in a while. Quick service, no tipping, bottomless fries.

5 Guys is better than going fast food, but is double the price. You do get more fries than you could ever eat though(fried in peanut oil too) and as many peanuts as you want. Not the place for anyone with a peanut allergy.
