2013-14 Albany Devils and ECHL Thread

I know goalies are hard to project but in the brief time I've seen kinkaid I haven't been impressed. I don't get how some people think he's going to be a legit nhl goalie and I would not feel comfortable with him at all as the backup next year.

I'm guessing, if the Devils and Marty do the right thing and Marty's not back next season, Lou looks for a Hedberg type...a guy who's both started and backed up, and has been decent for his career.  I don't have any names in mind at the moment, but I can't see Kinkaid getting a real shot at the job.

Darcy Zajac back at Albany Devils practice so Artem Demkov has been loaned back to Elmira. Demkov had 6 goals, 5 assists in 22 games. Demkov was nearly in the 75th percentile in points per game for age 24 AHLers and above it for goals per game. Solid job in his first taste AHL action. Albany has a full 25 man roster now with D. Zajac healthy and the Devils organization now has 4 players in Elmira (Demkov, Boychuk, Young, Clermont). Things getting a bit crowded.

ECHL

Elmira defeated Kalamazoo 4-1
Artem Demkov: Goal (PP), Assist (PP), +1, 4 Shots
Riley Boychuk: E, 2 PIM (Holding), 3 Shots
Harry Young: E
Maxime Clermont: DNP (Injured)

-- Demkov has 11 goals, 3 assists in 18 ECHL games this season.

There's a lot of them to be had, and for cheap. I feel like before 3-4 years ago, above-par goaltending was hard to come by, but a lot of younger kids have stepped up since. There are a lot of 25-30 year old backups now who probably would've been starters from 2000-2010.

I've always been a bit skeptical of Boucher but he's really having a solid rookie season. His 22 points in 26 games puts him close to the 95th percentile for AHL points per game (.846 vs .897) and his 11 goals put him above the 95th percentile in goals per game (.423 vs .391). Solid job as a 20 year old rookie. I hope he can keep it up and finish the year strong.

yeah I was pleased by the way he looked up here. Obviously he has a lot of improving to be a legit nhler but if his scoring can be good enough to warrant a top 6 spot he could be ok. I know their not apples to apples but a guy like Ryder is basically useless if he doesn't score... Boucher probably has to be in the same mold as pure scorer to be successful.

Boucher did a lot of small things better than Ryder already.  Might not score as many goals, but he could be a better player.

Felice seems to be the Devils minor league emergency standby goaltender for the past few years. He's played in 2 ECHL games (2010-11, 2011-12) for Trenton. In 3 minutes of time he has stopped 2 of 3 shots. Mike Ashmore had this nice write up on him from 2/18/11 when he appeared for Trenton in his ECHL debut.Trenton. I think he's dressed a few times as the back up for Lowell and Albany before. This guy used to practice with the New Jersey Rockin' Rollers back in the day if anyone remembers the roller hockey league. I think he's still a manager at a fitness club as his full time job.

Merrill was returned to Albany for the Olympic break but isn't in the line up today. Larsson is playing but Gelinas isn't - I don't think Gelinas can play during the break.

Cool, thanks for the info. I wonder how much he makes for a game.

How good is this Demkov kid?

Didnt Ryder start in echl?

I haven't seen Demkov play but judging by numbers he seems like a great ECHL player, probably a good AHL player, and may get a chance to crack a NHL line up one day, though he is already 24 so he's getting a bit old and the odds are probably against him. In 129 ECHL games he has 55 goals and 60 assists (0.89 PPG). This year in 22 AHL games he has 6 goals and 5 assists (0.50 PPG). Small sample size but his goals per game ratio for the AHL this year is in the 75th percentile.

Ryder split his 1st 2 pro years between the AHL and ECHL at the ages of 20 and 21. In 25 career ECHL games he had 18 goals and 18 assists.

Albany is now 9th in the conference with 57 points. 4 points separated 4th thru 9th.

Albany gets all their best players back, start to suck? Great.

Wedgewood's been pretty horrible all year and Kinkaid's play really has slipped as of late. In their last 9 games Albany is 2-5-0-2 and have just scored 17 goals. It's almost 4 AM so I'm not going to look thru the boxscores but I feel like their possession numbers probably have slipped some as well. It will be interesting when the guy that keeps track of the estimated possession comes out with his next spreadsheet.

When I eventually add AHL stats to my blog, I was planning on having a rolling SV% graph for the goalies. Looking at Kinkaid's month by month game log I noticed  he entered January with a .927 SV% but that fell to .912 after putting up a .879 SV% in January. He was off to a decent start this month but who knows how long he will be out with his injury.

Really wish I had read this article years ago before I bought into believing the Wedgewood hype hook, line, and sinker.

I haven't checked (and I won't) but it kinda felt like they were riding the percentages a fair bit, certainly in goal.

As for the CHL article...time travel is hard man :)

Kinkaid was probably playing well above his head when he was at .927.  And yeah, Wedge is not playing well at the AHL level.

Right now, neither of these guys has a future here.  It all goes back to Lou's actions speaking volumes.  Schneider was clearly a terrific grab, but does anyone think Lou wanted to cough up a top-10 pick to bring in a guy who could leave after two seasons, and who will likely cost near top dollar and term to stay?  Ideally, Kinkaid and/or Wedge would've been a terrific, in-house, low-cost option.  But neither is.

At least Wedge has youth and time on his side, but that's about all at this point.  Kinkaid will be 25 by the start of next season.  Basically, neither of these guys should really be viewed as potential Plan Bs by anyone, unless Plan B is to spend a couple of seasons trying to get Top 5 draft picks.

So Tedenby is doing very little after that first great game. Barely getting any shots on goal. Fair to say that he will be gone in the off-season.

I bet DeBoer isn't playing him enough.

I listened to that David Conte interview linked in the prospects thread and while there's a lot in it that makes me wary of this team's method of evaluating people, some of the stuff about 'making the commitment to become an NHL player' seems to ring true with Tedenby.
