He can't even sign a contract until July 1 of this year, so there's no reason to panic just yet.

I know i just meant we cant wait til after next season.

I agree. I'd like him signed by the end of July. With the new CBA rules, its really something I'd like taken care of.

Problem is Schneider probably winds up this season with about 40-45 GP, 15-20 wins and good but not great numbers otherwise.  Sure, if the Devils offer him max years at high per year average, he'd probably take it, but I could see Lou offering five or six years at less than top dollar.  Looks like Schneider's not going to get a chance to show he can be a 55-60 start #1-type this season, but he likely will next season.  I'm guessing his agent will tell him more money will be waiting for him after next season.

IDC what people have to say about Gionta.  But he's been great since coming back from injury.  I'd still like to see Josefson get consistent playing time, but with how Gio is playing, there's no way we can get him in the lineup.

speaking of clowe I like his physical play but I feel like hes never going to score a goal he just doesnt seem like hes ever in a good position

Yea and it's concerning.  But his overall play has been pretty good since coming back.  Hopefully he gets rewarded with a goal eventually.

clowe looked much better tonight for being in a scoring position was pleased with what he brought. Never thought gionta was as bad as what people always made him out to be around here.. hes a quick little guy.. even if he only has 2 or 3 goals atleast he puts in total effort which is a lot more then what some of the others appear to put in.

Okay, tonight's lineup has me really annoyed.  Loktionov out, Gelinas in, going with 7 D?  The Devils already have 3 D who play less than 20 minutes a game, now they're going to add another one?  I get that they are valuing the power play above Loktionov's 8-10 minutes on the 4th line, but that line has been ridiculously good the last 3 games - there's no sense in breaking it up.  They have to do something about this.

more of petes great line up choices... lokti has done nothing at all in a while... a pretty long while i dont think we will be missing anything with him sitting tonight

Not NEW (geez) topics here, Tri. As an old coach used to say all the time (John Fox, Panthers), "it is what it is."

He liked the way the defense played, so I imagine that means he liked Fayne, Merrill and Volch. It's irrelevant how well Salvador plays because he is a lock in this lineup. Against Dallas, you wouldn't want Volch, Salvador, and Gelinas together..but here we are.

So then we have the forwards. Taking Loktionov out just sucks. That line has been very good. It's out of the question that anyone from "the new third line" comes out, but I don't agree with this at all. And it actually doubles down on what Jagr was complaining about. Now you have guys double shifting with Boucher and Sislo.

If Gelinas is coming in, he better be on the first PP unit. Even then, I don't think this tradeoff makes much sense at all.

Pete's days have to be getting numbered. His system is alright but these personnel decisions are getting bad.

Yeah gelinas is coming in to be a pp specialist or get even strength time if were down in the third.

The way the pp has been I don't blame him for shoehorning gelinas in but I did like the way the lokti line has been playing and after jagr said the same guys are getting a lot of ice time I thought it would be good to keep that line together.

Oh well if we win by 4 goals tonight Pete is a genius I guess.

if you ask me i think he shouldve been canned a while back.. gotta wonder what its going to take for them to actually let him go.. maybe if the team doesnt make the playoffs once again that will be enough already

We need Gelinas offense.  That's why he's in.

Loktionov has been on for 16 shots on goal in the last 3 games he's played versus 5 against.  That's generating offense.  Now tonight what'll likely happen is that the Devils swap in players on the 4th line, then find a way to get Boucher on higher lines after PKs and drop Sislo from the rotation entirely.  It means 15 minutes of Stephen Gionta - this is the opposite of 'adding offense'.

dr33:  I don't necessarily blame him for tonight - Lou has to get rid of one of these guys somehow, whether by the AHL or trade - but if it's just tonight it's okay.  If they are going to make the decision after tonight, fine.  But it has to be made very soon.

The way they've handled this Gelinas thing is beyond inexcusable. Saturday he's being sent down, Monday he isn't, and Thursday he's playing but doesn't know if he's playing forward for the first time as a professional or not. Garbage.

You know who probably finds it excusable? Gelinas. I imagine he is just happy he is still with the big club and getting into the lineup tonight.

I agree about Loktionov.

But I was talking about Gelinas.  We need all the offensive help we can get, and Gelinas brings just that.

I agree.  I still am of disbelief that people who want more offense were perfectly ok with sending down one of our best offensive players.

Not happy with breaking up Loktionov's line. I like Carter but would've rather have him been the odd man out to get Gelinas back in. Not happy that Larsson is sitting now when apparently he's good to go.

I used to think that there was no such thing as too much depth but the Devils over the past year and a half have changed my opinion a bit.

His bank account is also happy to be up here. I'm not sure how NHL players get paid (bi-weekly?) but NHL salary of $650k compared to AHL salary of $65k. He'd probably fill the water bottles up here for that paycheck.

I agree, and at this point, this is on Lou, not DeBoer.

Lou's put the onus on DeBoer to clean up his mess: making excuses for Larsson still lurking in IR limbo and off the lineup (despite us knowing he's ready), dressing 7 d-men, scratching Gelinas (who I don't think gets scratched if a Volchenkov or Salvador gets traded, obviously). A trade should've happened by now and when Harrold is healthy again, it'll be even more of a sh!tstorm that Lou makes DeBoer figure out. I don't envy DeBoer's position the past month or two.

It's amateur hour, and Lou needs to figure it out. Addition by subtraction, like the Tallinder deal, not to mention addressing our needs on offense. But yeah... status quo.

This. These are young players who are well aware that they need to pay their dues on the way up. Hockey players are usually not part of the whole entitlement thing.

You think he's relieved he's in limbo, not knowing if he's playing a position he's never played as a professional after being scratched for two games?

They would have been better off either sending him down or scratching him and then putting him back on D. But Pete's been providing a clinic on how to screw up anyone and everyone under 25 the last two years and this is just the latest example.

It's one thing to be accountable, it's another to basically admit you have no idea what you're doing. If he was supposed to be sent down then send him down. Why would Elias (a forward) going on IR change that? If you want to convert him to forward do that in the AHL. This is just lazy roster nonmanagement.

Agreed.  He's now gonna be playing scared, and that's not what we need.

He's not playing forward tonight.  The Devils dressed 3 centers.  If they dressed 11 wingers he might be playing forward.  He's not.

They couldn't scratch him on Saturday because they wanted to keep open the possibility of Elias playing on Tuesday.

The Devils have a long history of converting players to forward in the NHL:  Corrente, Housley, Niedermayer are 3 examples I can remember off the top of my head.  I can go down the list of times this has happened in the NHL in the last 15 years on other teams.  It's not as uncommon as you might think.

They had to get under the 23 man limit in case Elias was ready to return. His being sent to the AHL was a paper move.
