Devils/Prudential Center Making 'Huge' Announcement Tomorrow a

217 posts in this topic

Why anyone is annoyed by this announcement is beyond me. But, why the Devils think we actually give a sh!t also makes no sense.

Glad they got a big sponsor, but like others have said, they should have not tried to make this seem like such a big deal from a fan perspective.

We're Devils fans.  We complain if the toilet paper in bathroom stalls is 2 ply instead of 1 ply.

I am glad the team is making some mega bucks, and are making mutually beneficial partnerships.  I am all for it.

However, do not send out stupid messages falsely leading the fans to believe something we actually care about will be revealed to the world....only to announce a sponsorship deal.

I wonder what the "arena takeover" entails.

“We're proud to welcome partypoker to our family as we embark on an exciting journey. As part of this partnership, co-branded assets will be built for our fans.” -O‘Neil

With online gambling being legal in NJ, I wonder if the end-game isn't to have laptops\tablet station(s) within the Fire & Ice Bar, so that you could just swipe your credit card and play. Perhaps that's why they altered the attendance capacity this season? --preparation to renovate the Fire & Ice bars into more of a PartyPoker interactive parlor lounge. If the sum of money the Devils are getting paid is that significant, PP might have grand plans within the Rock.. beyond just a couple of decals, or a sign.

Scott O‘Neil is supposedly the best in the biz at this, and it's awesome that Harris went out and got him from MSG to work on his teams and arena.

I agree. I think Scott O‘Neil is a young, savvy, talented businessman, with a clear vision on how to cultivate a brand. --and even if the long-term plan in this partnership is PP stations within the Fire\Ice lounges.. if it enhances the fans experience, then I applaud it.

No Lou Lamoriello at the podium or in camera view. Lou's days are numbered. I can't see him agreeing to this type of commercial partnership.

I don't agree that LL's days are "numbered" so-to-speak. However, I do find it extremely telling that he was absent. If this organization farts, Lou is there. Why no-show an announcement as large in scale as todays? Whether he knows the end-game to this partnership is questionable. But it's this kind of progressive thinking that now sets apart the Devils from other franchises. Bràvo Mr. O‘Neil.

I don't think they can do it the way you would describe. If they take money right there at the terminal to use as gambling money, then they would probably need a casino license for that. However, if you are just renting the computer like an old Internet cafe, it might be possible.

I also read that the only online casinos that are legal in nj must have a physical casino in nj. Is that true or am I interpreting the law wrong?

If you or any fan has a problem with them having ads there then they would also have to take the bud light ads down too. Funny none of the you suck supporters never called for that.

The you suck supporters would only have a point if they opened an actual casino in the arena which would probably never happen.

People are overthinking or overeacting to this a bit... Yeah its poker... So gambling... So yeah some people have addictions and some people may have lost a lot because of it and all...

But i havent heard of a lot of people coming back home from playing poker and beating up their wifes and kids or killing people in car accidents. Yet nobody has problem with beer sponsors and all.

In the late 80's early 90's the Devils had TropWorld board advertising and arena giveaways sponsored by Trump Plaza/Castle which last i looked, won't be confused with Chuck E Cheese.

I just love pro-YS logic. It's amusing  :P

The Devils should be ashamed to call this a "huge announcement", they have fans expecting any number of things, from like a new jersey retirement, to anything actually regarding the NHL club and they pull this sh!t? An agreement with an online poker company?

A year ago it was "The NY Post has learned that the NHL is close to taking over the beleaguered New Jersey Devils who find themselves in debt and unable to pay there creditors etc etc blah blah blah"

Would you prefer to go back to that world?

Because they'd still have what matters the most, YS and the goal song, while the team is negotiating a relocation with Seattle, Houston or Quebec.

My feelings to all of this = meh. I mean, it's great money for the team, but as a fan, it doesn't affect me in any way, shape, or form. Don't know why they'd tease this as some "huge announcement". I mean, it's good, but I'd hardly call it huge from a purely fan-based perspective. Not something worth hyping.

Well not until they start advertising it up the wazoo and annoy the crap out of everyone.  They're already planning an arena takeover Saturday.

Okay so we can advertise online poker. Other arenas advertise casinos on the boards. But the second a state tries to have legal sports books the NHL is with the other 3 leagues in the lawsuit to stop them. God damn hypocrites

Bush league tactics for sure...which is why I am pissed, but I knew from the beginning it was some poker nonsense.  I am a HUGE poker fan/love playing and I go to Atlantic City frequently.  I could still care less about this arrangement.  I am glad it helps the Devils financially, but do not blow it up to be some sort of awesome news.

Absolutely not.

But do not hype upcoming news as something for the fan base to get excited about, only to announce a sponsorship deal that has no benefit to the fans.

Where were all of these "announcements" when previous sponsors signed on?

Oh, that's right...they didn't have them because it is absurd.

I want the RnR Pt 2 back BADLY.  I hated the YS component of it, and only participated after "HENRIQUE!  IT'S OVER!!!"

This "arena takeover" isn't going to consist of much....my prediction

Other than the obvious signage and ads on the scoreboard etc

This is the only valid complaint yet. It straddles the line because they're a sponsor, so it's not like anyone stands to make more money if the Devils win or lose, it's all the same. If they wanted to get real corrupt, I guess they could have the Devils throw games and then they set odds that would make them tons of cash. However, I think that's unlikely with LL at the helm.

right I'm not necessarily saying this particular situation but seeing as sports betting will be legal in the not too distant future these types if relationships going on across many sports and franchises could really become murky... The biggest concern any league should have is the threat of hurting the integrity of the game.

The line is they can't promote SPORTS gambling. This is poker.

sports gambling is coming it is inevitable and all these online poker sites will want in.

I'm glad we are moving into the 20th century with our sponsorships but this type of thing can become interesting pretty quickly.

I would have thought that people would be happy about this. A team that just got our of serious financial problems can use all of the money they can get and this seems pretty big. They also said this was just the start.

Everyone here knows that the Devils are a small market team located right in between two power house franchises. A team like the Devils almost has to make moves like this to stay competitive in this market (not so much the team itself but as a small market franchise). Actually with more sponsors will probably come more spending money on the team as well so as people have pointed out maybe we can spend to the cap again.

This can only be good news for the franchise. I liked JVBK as an owner but this team needs these new guys. Guys with a modern take on how to run the franchise. I'd honestly rather have cut throat business men as the owners of this team than a fan. We needed a change and we got it.

Move past the We Suck chant already too. It's not a real issue.

Interesting theory, and you're absolutely right. Capacity in a building directly affects how many bathrooms, toilets, water fountains, corridor square footage, etc., are required. I could see a renovation happening for sure; neither party looked like this partnership was just happening for a few extra commercials or signage.

And I'm with you, I applaud Scott O'Neil; he has a vision and obviously is working hard to make this a very profitable organization, which will end well for all of us, I think. Too many Devils fans want us to remain the "mom-and-pop store" that Vanderbeek made us to be, but that worked so well for us then, didn't it?......

All of you complaining about this deal, whether because you have an issue with a gambling-related sponsorship or because you thought you were duped by the media hype they put into it, you'll all be loving this deal (and deals like it) when we can finally be a team that's capable of re-signing our future marquee players and will be able to sign new ones as the cap goes up astronomically in a few years. Stop grumbling, this type of thing is absolutely great news for our franchise and I'm sure there's a lot more to come with the ownership we have in place.
