In soccer, it's presumed any player given the chance to play for their country will go. It's a part of the game. No reason hockey should be any different. It would be ridiculous if GMs got pouty because their players were injured playing for their country. Soccer doesn't have teams like North America and Europe though. Well yea, those teams are garbage and have no place in international competition.
'7'
Was anybody watching this? The lack of buzz, joke uniforms, joke teams...and just the fact that this entire tournament was a bit too early for meaningful hockey really marred things. Who even won? What was the trophy? I mean who has a big hockey tournament going on when the NFL and college football is just getting started and very important baseball is being played. Hockey has to start quietly in mid October and build its way up. The only thing we learned here is that the NHL needs the Olympics and it needs them DESPERATELY. Nobody cared about the World Cup. With the Olympics at least you have the allure of the gold medal, no football, no baseball, no uni ads cheapening things, and the international media desperately craving any excuse to make somebody a home town hero. Remember TJ Oshie...guy became a household name for shootout goals in an a warm up game.

I really didn't follow the tournament at all. The way USA was built they were basically sabotaged from the start and with Tortorella as coach as the icing on the cake. I couldn't watch more than 1 period of any game and totally gave up on the tournament halfway through the USA-Canada game in the round robin stage. Canada beat team Europe in the finals btw 2 games to 0.
