No More Hard Tickets

Word is going around that the Devils are doing away with giving out hard ticket booklets to STH and instead giving people cards where their tickets are loaded.  Also if you want to transfer tickets to another account, the other person will have to have the Devils official app and a ticketmaster login to retrieve them as there will no longer be an option to print from home.  For an additional $25 you can get hard tickets, but they will be regular Prudential Center Box Office tickets but you have to call/notify your rep soon if you want this option.

Just an FYI.

The "no more print-at-home" thing sounds a lot like what the Yankees did; as a way of getting rid of StubHub tickets. If this is true, and this is what they're doing -- anticipate a lot of backlash. And by "a lot", I mean 75% empty stadiums and a 43987 page thread on NJDevs.

Taking away the secondary market is going to murder attendance. I went to 30 games last year. 28ish were tickets I bought on stubhub an hour before the game. A large majority of my friends did the same thing.

This is bad.

I agree that this is incredibly stupid. I went to about 10 games last year and most of the time I bought the tickets from the Devils Ticket Exchange, which is mostly season ticket holders selling tickets. The Devils aren't the Yankees, they can't do sh!t like this and expect no fall-out. They should be making it easier for people to attend games, not harder.

This.. doesn't sound good.

I almost always go secondary market for one reason or another.  If this jacks up prices..

Another case of 'it ain't broke, fix it anyway and make it appreciably worse'. I'm so sick of sh!t like this with sports teams... Just let us print the fvcking tickets. This is where technology does nothing to help. It just tempts teams to pull sh!t like this that just pisses everyone off.

At the very least, if you're the Devils braintrust, take stock of where your team is!  The Devils have become a perennial playoff also-ran for four years running, and haven't exactly been entertaining for the balance of those four years.  This year is looking iffy as well...not saying that they 100% won't make the playoffs this season, but it's far from a guarantee.

The timing of this sucks.

the team is only 32 years old, does it really need Viagra already?

My rep called me this morning and told me they were just giving out a card.  I prefer that but i do go to most games.  He claimed that there problems last year and that this should speed up the lines to get in.  Not sure how true that is because the metal detector seems to slow the lines down more than the ticker checkers.  Although I do remember that the scanning usually took 2 or 3 times with an actual ticket and that the printouts caused problems at times as well.

Nothing much to actually add to the thread, just wanted to say that stupid joke.

I'm sure you can still buy on ticket exchange. This is a way to eliminate stub hub purchases. With no pdfs you would need the hard ticket to sell.

I'm sure Ticket Exchange isn't going anywhere, but if I wanna buy from there, will I still be able to print my tickets at home? Will I have to log in through Ticketmaster to claim the tickets (which I may or may not be able to print), or can they be E-mailed directly to me? It sounds like they're making everyone involved jump through more hoops. They need to clarify some stuff here.

Yeah sometimes I think the Devils think they're the only game in town, as opposed to sharing a market with 8 other major sports teams... Decisions like this make me wonder what the level of delusion is in the ticket office (the pricing doesn't help either).

If this is the new policy, then this will be my last year with season tickets.  With young kids, it's harder and harder for me to go to all of the games and I usually sell the games I can't attend on Stubhub to offset some of the costs.  TicketExchange is a joke and I refuse to use it.  The masses don't go there and it's much harder to get the tickets sold on that website.

They should also be making it easier for sth's to do what they want with their tickets, not harder.  But of course it's all about the quick buck over growing the market long-term.  I love the location of my seats but the pro/con of being a STH just got weighted a lot more toward the con.  I only go to 2/3 of games - which is still a pretty good amount - and sometimes my friend doesn't go with me so I have to sell extras of both pairs and singles.  This makes it infinitely harder unless you're literally going to the vast majority of games, even more than 2/3.  But of course to the Devils my 28 or so games aren't valuable to them cause I sell the other 13 plus singles in some other games, and I wouldn't even mind selling on TE except for the artificial floor they enforce on both the price of every game and the # of games you can sell.

And yeah they have delusions of grandeur over how valuable their tickets are, like this is Toronto or the Garden where you can charge a couple hundred bucks for third-tier seats in the regular season.   You couldn't even do that here in the glory days, never mind now.   If they are going to force everyone to TE AND still maintain the 'five game' rule they're going to start stripping STH's at an alarming rate.

Heck I already sold a couple of preseason games on StubHub with the paper option not knowing there was going to BE no paper tickets, so it's already an inconvenience

The Yankees changed the policy by reaching a bajillion dollar deal with StubHub. I think their pockets are a bit deeper.

Well technically our guys are rich enough to own three different sports teams so money shouldn't be an issue...it seems to be common sense that's the issue here.

If they do the same thing the Yankees did, (past tense -- there was enough screaming and angry letters from fans and a half-empty stadium for a few months to make them change this) here's how it works:

There is no longer Print-At-Home tickets. Stubhub sales are still a thing, but only with physical tickets (AKA no last-minute sales. The only 'last-minute' tickets you can get (day before/day of a game) from stubhub would involve driving to their Bronx location to pick them up.

The season ticket holder or ticketmaster online purchase access is through your phone, through a designated app. The app has a flashing barcode, so you can't just screenshot the app and use it as your method of entry (sort of like NJTransit app tickets).

That means the only way to buy tickets from other fans without going through the hassle of requesting physical tickets and mailing them to stubhub is to use the ticketmaster re-sale app. Which means now, not only does ticketmaster get the fee from you when they upload it, they also get to charge me for downloading it. Similar to the way stubhub runs, only with absolutely ridiculous fees. For Yankees games, I paid a "last minute" fee in addition to my "no printing" fee (charge you to print AND charge you for convenience of not having to print, because fvck you that's why) were close to $15 per ticket.

It's monopolizing the re-sale market, making cheap tickets impossible to come by. Our stadium will be 30% filled if they are stupid enough to do this. At best.

What an out of touch and pathetic thing to do. They literally just had to look for five seconds at what a disaster of epic proportions this was for the Yankees. And if the Yankees can't sell tickets to a weekend series against a division rival, who the fvck is going to pay out of their ass to watch the Devils lose 2-0 to Columbus on a tuesday?

EDIT: I'll add that if I was a season ticket holder, I would be calling demanding a refund yesterday. There has to be some protections against this; this is an immediate and seriously fvcked up situation for any season ticket holders who don't plan on attending 35+ games this year.

What a fvcking disaster.

Basically it comes down to this: the NY YANKEES- far and away the #1 team in this market and the most successful and storied franchise in American sports- tried this, and it failed MISERABLY. THE YANKEES. Where in the fvck do the Devils get the balls to pull something like this when the biggest team in the biggest market on the planet couldn't even get it to work for them? I'll tell ya... Big brass ones the Devils have.

The hilarious thing about TE is the floor's so high for the 80% of games that'll never sell for their ridiculous face value you generally can't sell them on TE anyway.  They're trying to drive people to selling on TE (all the while threatening you with 'we reserve the right to strip your STH's if you sell more than five games there!'), but the prices are so artificially high on TE nobody's going to be able to sell there for the majority of games regardless, which is also more empty seats and money lost on concessions/souvenirs and more games eaten by sth's = less of an incentive to renew.

Their obsession with bringing down StubHub is penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Wow, I was mildly annoyed at first but after reading up on this I'm both furious and incredibly disappointed.

They've effectively both priced me out of attending more than a game or two a year on the principle of the matter, and killed my hopes of purchasing season tickets in a year or two.

Also - obligatory fvck Ticketmaster. If a ticket distribution company could be described as "evil" it'd apply here. The fees they tack on on top of everything are ridiculous and insulting.

I find it very odd that they are blocking stubhub when stubhub is a major sponsor of the 76ers. I can't imagine they are doing this to 76ers fans as well?

I emailed my complaints and I suggest every Devils fan, season ticket holder or not should do the same.

Our front office needs to have a more realistic view about what and who our fan base is. When we have a full season of sell outs then just maybe they can start acting like this.

People with Twitter should tweet at the Devils too about this- the more who speak up, the more likely they act.

I'm going to wait for all the details to come out before I jump to a bunch of conclusions.

It does seem weird and out of character, as it seems like they've been making huge strides in increasing season ticket holder value and worth, and have been successful. All games that I couldn't make last season, I was able to sell on StubHub for STH price or MORE. This hasn't been the case in years. Before last season, if I wanted to get rid of tickets on StubHub, I'd have to price it $10-15. Last year, I couldn't make maybe 7 or 8 games, and sold them all for $32-45. I didn't know what the Devils management did to change things last year but I noticed the positive improvement. This would seem like they're proactively stripping that down. Not smart on their part if this is all true.

You just based this whole rant pound for pound on what the Yankees do. Can we at least CONFIRM some of the details of how the Devils' ticketing situation will work 100% before we overreact like this ^^ ???

This is silly.

I prefer the experience of going to games at the Rock than being an away fan in Philly, but for me I usually get offered free tickets for the Devils games in Philly through work so I'll probably just do more of that this year.   I don't mind paying more to go to games in Newark if there is a reasonable secondary market but that doesn't sound like the case here.
