This is going to be a difficult roster improvement.... I'm not seeing any easy paths to a top pairing up grade

Who is a realistic FA in the next two Years?

And drafting is a 3 year process for a young d man.. especially since we don't appear  to be bottom feeders now

Hynes likes small puck movers, but we need some size and speed puck diggers and crease clearers.. hmmmmm

Will santini step up, Boucher seems hesitant going into the boards.. he does that meet the guy 10 feet away thing

What's shero's plan... do we mortgage the future for a draft move up

I really wanna keep a close eye on John Carlson throughout the year, Jersey native, I would say a legitimate top pairing guy, if he makes it to July 1st you gotta believe we at least try to make a big play for him.

Also wonder if Shero is keeping his eye on Tyson Barrie in Colorado, if the Avs really are tearing down the whole thing, adding someone like Barrie to this roster would be a pretty big addition.

I think we have some legit trade chips. I do agree an upgrade is much needed.  I think they've been trying to move Lovejoy. And they will hold onto Prout for bigger teams & thugs. (which aren't many any more) there's also talk (Game day w/ Steve Kouleus) the with changes in Arizona, OEL might be available.

Moving forward, you’ve got a collection of young NHL defenseman. Nobody phenomenal, but I’d argue the following players are good pieces moving forward:

Severson, Butcher, Santini, Mueller.

The thing that’s frightening is that there’s really nobody jumping out at you on the pipeline. I’ve always wondered if you could dangle Zacha+ for one of the kids in Carolina; not that I’ve given up on Pavel, but because I think he still holds value based on his draft position. A value that may depreciate as he gains NHL experience and doesn’t quite put it together yet.

Rykov, but he's under contract in the KHL for one more year after this I think.

OEL seems like a pipe, pipe dream. It cost Taylor Hall to get a guy like Larsson; I can’t imagine what OEL would cost.

McLeod, Henrique and a 2nd? Something crazy like that? No, thanks.

To be fair Peter Chiarelli is a panicky idiot who trades his players for 75 cents on the dollar or worse because of need or stupidity. Hell the Islanders have been abusing him for a bit now.

How is OEL's actual defensive game? Its hard to tell because why would I watch Coyotes games and they suck out loud so he'd get alot of minutes in a sh!tty situation killing his plus minus at a glance. Honestly that package if he was signed for another year sounds fair.

I mentioned this in the GDT the other night, but does anything think NJ might be able to wiggle Trouba away from the Jets? I thought he wanted out of there as bad as Duchane wanted out of COL.

Still a young guy,  taken 9th overall and he has put up good numbers in the past.

EDIT: Nevermind, he rescinded his trade request a while ago. I guess I missed it.

The price for a solid defenseman (and even more so a legit top pairing D) in today's market is so high that I would like to see Shero try another Mueller type of move before going all in on a player like Barrie. But if not, there definitely are teams that could trade a good defenseman in exchange for some help up front, which the Devils might actually be able to offer. Carolina and Calgary are two examples.

There are players out there that could be very good at the NHL level but are being blocked by teams with a lot of depth at D. Jake Bean (CAR) and Shea Theodore (VGK) are among those that I'd like to see Shero go after. Hopefully the price would not be very high considering neither has (much) NHL experience.

I agree with what Marty said, that the four younger guys (Severson, Santini, Mueller, and Butcher) are probably going to be good enough to stick with this team moving forward, although Mueller still has a bit to prove. But I'm not sure I agree that there isn't much in the pipeline. As MD2020 said, there's Rykov who has been a good player in the KHL and awesome in international competitions. We also have Davies and Walsh who seem to be playing well in the NCAA (small sample size for Walsh). I can't imagine Davies (sophomore) waits to turn pro after finishing college, with the way he has played. If Shero makes another Mueller type of move, but maybe for a player that has a higher ceiling, then maybe we aren't in bad shape. All it takes is one of those high potential guys to reach that potential, and the Devils will be very solid on defense.

As far our "pipeline"  there's no imminent D man (in Binghamton) deserving of a call up that I'm aware of. Mueller has been good on this last trip, and overall Butcher has been a pleasant surprise (albeit PP specialist) As far as Trouba is concerned, Winnipeg doesn't trade anything!  Toronto is also looking for D-men & have more trade chips.  Lou would love to have Greener there. Carrick has been a scratch there since Polak came on board

I don't think that would actually land OEL but I would do that in a second.  You're talking about a high end #1D

Vlasic and OEL as our top Pairing?  A Trade and a buy...

I don't see why SJS would move a guy they just extended + he has a NMC.

My guy would be Chris Tanev. Modified NTC but 4.45 this and next two.

Doesn't McLeod have a lot of upside still?  I mean let's not forget the guy was a first round draft pick, 15 overall, if I remember correctly. He hasn't even played an NHL game, so I don't know that I'd want to package and ship him out just yet.

Nor has he played an AHL game yet.  Outside of being a mid-first rounder (he went 12th overall), his value hasn't really been established much beyond that.  Of course we're hopeful, but I don't think anyone can really say what Mike McLeod's future is...which is why it's even harder to say what value he has in the eyes of NHL GMs.
