August 22, 2006

BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Bruins have re-signed Patrice Bergeron, their top scorer from last season, to a multiyear contract.

Bergeron had 31 goals and 42 assists last season to become the youngest player in team history to record a 30-goal season. The 21-year-old center has 47 goals and 65 assists in his two years with Boston.

"Patrice is an outstanding young player with a tremendous future," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Tuesday in a statement announcing the signing. "He is an offensive threat every time he is on the ice, has great defensive instincts and he plays a physical game without taking a lot of penalties."

The Bruins selected Bergeron 45th overall in the 2003 NHL draft. He was a restricted free agent before the deal.

The 6-foot, 197-pound center from Sillery, Quebec, played for Canada in three world tournaments.

Bergeron and Chiarelli planned a news conference for Wednesday. A team spokeswoman said neither was available for comment Tuesday.

Yeah if he is getting nearly 5 mill a year which i think is very high for a 3rd yr player, it may drive up the asking price for Gionta. It may also mean the end of Gomez next year if he goes looking for 6 - 6.5 mill

Gio is 27 in his prime right now... Bergeron is 21 with much more to show.... Boston is paying on potential, Gio has shown one great season after steadily building up...

I dont think this will effect him much.

They do have him locked away for five years. It also puts pressure on him to play well or be traded.

At some point, 3 or 4 or 5 years down the road, Bergeron may be worth well over 4.75 mil and maybe it'll start seeming like a really good deal then.

But that's all a big if.
