Newark kids on ice

Many years from now, sportswriters will discuss in glowing detail how the New Jersey Devils filled the arena between Broad and Mulberry streets with championship tradition.

They will also credit the Devils with launching a hockey tradition in a city where few understood the sport. And they will be wrong.

Newark's hockey tradition was born in 1969, five years before the Devils franchise existed. Today it continues on ice in the Ironbound and in recreation centers throughout the city.

Last year, while the Devils were preparing to play in their new home, the coaches hosted a "Learn to Play Hockey" clinic for kids 10-14 years old. The marketing for the program consisted of word-of-mouth promotion. Suprisingly, 50 children showed up on the first day.

lol not surprising.

Still, attendance has been solid this year, hopefully their community outreach programs will actually build a solid base for the sport in Newark. If there comes a time when the Devils do start to perform poorly, that kind of support will go a long way in helping the bottom line.
