NJayDevil
Now I'm not one to blame a goalie's hot streak on the size of his equipment but "Jiggy's" pads and chest protector are kinda massive. He is benefiting alittle from the size of those beasts for sure, but that doesn't fully explain why he's kissing so much ass. Some suggest Giguere is 'getting help' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services It's gotta be the pads? That's what the Minnesota Wild were saying about Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Continuing his postseason brilliance, the Anaheim goalie has now posted two straight shutouts as the Mighty Ducks lead the Western Conference finals 2-0. But some players have hinted that Giguere might be getting some help -- of the illegal kind. The Wild's Antti Laaksonen first raised the issue after Giguere shut out the Wild, 1-0, in Saturday's Game 1. Teammate Cliff Ronning later suggested that NHL officials should check Giguere's pads. The Stars' Claude Lemieux made the same "claim" before Game 1 of the West semifinals. "I don't know what the regulations are or whatever, but his pads are way too big," Lemieux told reporters. Giguere, meanwhile, disputes the talk. "My pads are legal," he told The Los Angeles Times. "I don't care. They have been measured, so what can I say?" Ducks coach Mike Babcock thought the accusation was so ridiculous that he even started joking about it with the media. "Doesn't anyone want to ask me about Giguere's pads?" Babcock sarcastically asked reporters Monday. "They are huge. The better he plays, the bigger they get. It's an amazing thing." According to a report in the L.A. Times, Ducks equipment manager Mark O'Neill said that Giguere's pads were already submitted for a random check after Game 1 of the team's first-round series vs. Detroit. The 2002-03 NHL rulebook limits the width of a goaltender's pads to 12 inches. There is no reference to a limit on length. Regardless of all the talk, Giguere has been the talk of the playoffs. And after Monday's 2-0 win over the Wild, Giguere extended his scoreless streak to 153 minutes, 17 seconds, dating back to 14:49 of the third period of Game 6 against Dallas in the second round. Here's the rule: Rule 21. Goalkeeper's Equipment According to the 2002-03 National Hockey League Rulebook: (b)The leg guards worn by goalkeepers shall not exceed twelve inches (12") in extreme width when on the leg of the player. No attachments such as plastic puck foils are permitted. Calf protectors must follow the contour of the calf and ankle and can have a thickness of no greater than one-and-a-half inches (1 1/2"). (NOTE) These inspections can take place anytime, before, during, or after a game. A member of the League Staff (Hockey Operations and/or Security Departments) may obtain the equipment from any or all four participating goalkeepers. This equipment may be removed to a secure location for measuring. Any violation of this Rule will result in an automatic one (1) game suspension for the next League game to the offending goalkeeper. Should both goalkeepers on a Club have illegal equipment, both will be suspended in sequence. The goalkeeper who played the day/night of the measurement will be suspended for the next game, and the back-up goalkeeper will be suspended for the following game. The recalling of minor league goalkeepers to ensure a complete lineup for subsequent games, shall be deemed to be an Emergency Recall, and subject to the twenty-three (23) man roster limitations. Refusal to submit the equipment for League measurement will result in the same sanctions as that of a goalkeeper with illegal equipment. Any violation of this Rule shall be reported to the Club involved and to the Commissioner of the League.

'7'
all that gear + a trap in front of you and the goals 13 feet from the endboards, no wonder all these games are 0-0, 1-0. ridiculous serious crackdowns in goalie equipment needs to come next season. Reduce pad length and cut back pad width from 12 inches to 11. that chest protector needs to be decreased, so does the blocker & glove. SBT
Apparently, JS' equipment dimensions are within NHL regulations. Perhaps it is time to change those regulations. But until that time, the Wild still need to get Giggy with it.
Sen4Ever
Just wondering, are there any restrictions on how fat a goalie can be. Can a Sumo wrestler be allowed too be a goaltender?
Weekes Head
Sure why not...but just cause he's fat and blocks the net doesn't mean he'll be good...

goobergirl
Yeah his pads are within NHL rules, but they were saying something about it being rigged to where when he goes into the butterfly or moves a certain way, the pads will move and will give more padding. LizDevil30
Those pads look HUGE. It is sure nice to know Marty doesn't depend on equipment for his greatness.
