this is getting abit old.

how is the devils much worse than last year? in what way does this team need to be saved? please

I tend to agree here. On the surface it looks like we lost a few goals and a lot of penalty minutes while getting younger and cheaper. There's always something to be excited about with the coming season, whether it be seeing new free agent acquisitions or seeing how young talent develops. This year will be the latter.

How are we worse?

LOSSES:

Brian Gionta- speedy right winger who scores at least 20 goals per year and plays good defense and isn't afraid to stand in front of the net.

John Madden- one of the best defensive forwards of our day. Sure he was on the decline but is an intricate part of any lineup and was our third line center.

Mike Rupp- size

Bobby Holik- not a big loss

Nick Havelid- not a big loss

Scott Clemmensen- the backup goalie that saved our season

ADDITIONS:

Ilkka Pikkarainen- we know pretty much nothing about this guy. But how good could a seventh round draft pick from 2002 be?

Re-sign:

Andy Greene- expendable by EVERY mean. Anyone can do his job.

Johnny Oduya- best move of the offseason. He was here last year, not necessarily an improvement.

Coach: NONE

Needs: Second line center

Still up in the air: Travis Zajac, Brendan Shanahan

Right now, with the players that are SIGNED, our lineup looks like:

Parise-?-Langenbrunner (will re-sign Zajac and will be a great line)

Elias-Zubrus-? (Zubrus wasn't terrific at center and now there's no right wing)

?-Rolston-? (Rolston was terrible at center and there's no wingers)

Pandolfo-?-Leblond (Nothing to say)

Martin-Oduya

White-Mottau

Greene-Salvador

Brodeur

?

IMPORTANT: ANY YOUNG PLAYER THAT WE ASSUME IS GOING TO JUMP UP ON THE BIG SQUAD IS MERELY SPECULATION AND HOPES. WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW THESE PLAYERS WOULD FARE IN AN 82 GAME SEASON NOR DO ANY OF THEM HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE.

So all together, this is TERRIBLE compared to last year.

The only people were lost were Brian Gionta and John Madden and everyone is flipping a sh!t.

Rolston and Clarkson will get increased playing time (Mostly Rolston) to fill in for Gio and combine that with what Bergfors can do and that is fine as a replacement for Gionta. Madden was our third line defensive specialist... Who cares? Finally we can play our top two lines more. ZZPops will just get more ice time. The third line will obviously play we just won't have to line match witch was one of the reasons we lost in the playoffs last year.

You're missing Clarkson on your lines.

I disagree with this IMPORTANT section. We don't know what anyone will actually do in this upcoming season but we estimate it based on what players have done in the past, whether that past is the NHL, AHL, or whatever. To just effectively write anyone who wasn't in the NHL last season an effective 0 for production is unfair.

Also, Madden was pretty bad last season, he could be addition by subtraction. He only scored 7 goals and had the worst +/- on the team excluding Pando. If his name wasn't Madden people would have been screaming he needed to leave the team but his name is giving him cache his game wasn't backing up.

LOSSES:

Brian Gionta- speedy right winger who scores at least 20 goals per year and plays good defense and isn't afraid to stand in front of the net.

The same Brian Gionta everyone complained about all year? Who also isn't worth 5 million?

John Madden- one of the best defensive forwards of our day. Sure he was on the decline but is an intricate part of any lineup and was our third line center.

Madden has slipped considerably and it was time to move on.

Mike Rupp- size we can find more size. Rupp was cement handed. Except for when it was time to fight.

Bobby Holik- not a big loss Agreed, it was a shame how far he fell.

Nick Havelid- not a big loss Agreed

Scott Clemmensen- the backup goalie that saved our season He was signed for the AHL. I love the guy, but he wasn't getting $1.3 million to ride the pine.

ADDITIONS:

Ilkka Pikkarainen- we know pretty much nothing about this guy. But how good could a seventh round draft pick from 2002 be? He should more than make up for Rupp or Holik.

Re-sign:

Andy Greene- expendable by EVERY mean. Anyone can do his job. Not sure why he got signed, and especially not sure why he got a raise after Lou non-tendered him.

Johnny Oduya- best move of the offseason. He was here last year, not necessarily an improvement. Agreed. Glad he's still here.

Coach: NONE This is troubling at this point.

Needs: Second line center

Still up in the air: Travis Zajac, Brendan Shanahan

Parise-?-Langenbrunner (will re-sign Zajac and will be a great line)

?-Rolston-? (Rolston was terrible at center and there's no wingers)

Pandolfo-?-Leblond (Nothing to say)

Rolston was a consistant 60 point scorer until last season. He won't be the 3rd line center. He'll get a chance on the second line. Pelley will be the 4th line center. Pikkarainen will be on the 3rd or 4th line. Bergfors will be on the 2nd or 3rd line.

Martin-Oduya

White-Mottau

Greene-Salvador

Martin and Oduya better be split up. I'm also hoping Corrente or Eckford get a shot.

Brodeur

? I'm thinkin Weekes gets another year.

The kids have to start somewhere. They don't appear in the league with experience. Detroit, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Anaheim, Boston, they all let the kids show what they can do. Lets see what Bergfors can do with an Elias or a Rolston. We may be pleasantly surprised.

So all together, this is TERRIBLE compared to last year. Last year's team won 51 games and the division. This team is a step down from that. Say, 44 wins and second in the division, maybe 4th or 5th in the conference. Not at all terrible.

The season hasn't been played yet, so everything is mere speculation at this point. Saying we'd be better off if we'd kept Gio/Madden, saying we'd be better off if we had signed some UFAs, saying young players will play well ... it's all the same. We have no idea how it will play out until it plays out.

But you've gotta give the kids a chance. If we just plug holes with free agents, we sorta become the Yankees of hockey. One of the great things about the Devils has always been that they promote from within rather than aggressively playing the free agent game (like those dolts across the river). Gionta and Madden earned their shots, as well as Elias, Martin, White, Clarkson and hell, even Brodeur. Now it's time to see what Bergfors and Pelley (and, probably to a lesser degree, Halischuk) can do.

and dont forget that the teams in our division have gotten better..

Did they all, though?

Pittsburgh won the cup and are probably favored to win the east again right now. They do, however, need to fill in a defensive spot and sign a back-up goalie with under 3 million in cap space.

Philly got Pronger but have a question mark in goal, although I think we are underestimating Emery and Boucher. They will also need to unload some salary (Briere most likely).

The Rags got them selves out of salary cap hell, and then hopped right back into it signing Gaborik. They have 14 million in cap space left, and still have to resign 5 RFA's and atleast 1 defenseman, or they will be entering the season with a 3rd pairing of rookies. Plus Lundqvist's knees aren't getting any better.

Isles are the Isles. Tavares will probably impress, but he won't be enough to clean up that mess this season. Okposo and Bailey will be better. The defense is a mess after Streit. The goaltending will be Roloson, DP, and Scott Munroe. DP is most likely more hurt than we know, or they would've re-signed Danis or MacDonald, who both did admirably well, to back him up for less than Roloson. Also, they drafted 2 goalies this year. Something is up.

Overall, I'm most worried about Pitt and Philly depending on how they pull together. The Isles' kids will definitely torch us in a game or 2 this year. If the Isles clean that D up, they will be scary in a couple years. Rags will sink again because they will have to sacrifice youth for those huge contracts.

All of the teams have their problems to deal with.

When the Devils are in first place this year beating the teams that went free agent crazy, will these threads stop. And will everyone be Devils fans again? lol

And when we lose in the first round, we'll do this all over again next summer!

I am going to try to stay calm all year, cause what the Devs do in the reg. season doesn't matter much.

I can't wait for Apr '10!

it's the same team - Gionta + Rolston + defenseman - Leach, PLUS MARTY, from when they were running hot last season. get over it, drama queen.

Seriouslly dude, the more you post this offseason, the more respect I lose for your hockey sense.

First of all, in your rush to condemn the team, you exclude both Clarkson (As previously noted) and PL3 (who is Rupp's replacement).

Seems you want a team of highly overpaid, FLASHY, forwards who are giant hockey divas - and your willing to trade most of our talent to do so.

Heatley?

Comrie?

Sykora?

Come on, these guys heads only single-handedly can dismantle a locker room with their malaise.

If you think any of these guys would be Devils ever you need to seriously reexamine what Lou has done and what he is doing.

Most here are just pissed and bitching like bratty 16 year-olds that all of there friends got flashy brand new cars for their birthdays at the expense of their families going into deep credit card debt, and we have nothing to show off in return because we've been responsible.

When was Sutter signed and announced in 2007?

I vividly remember a lot of bitching and complaining about last years squad which was a division winner btw. Now there is bitching and complaining because next years team will supposedly reach even higher levels of suck. So just to get this straight. The fan base is pissed because even though last years team sucked, this one is going to suck even more and that just basically sucks, just like the team both last year and for next year.
