Historically Brodeur bounces back solid. With the Rangers on tap I hope we see a completely different Brodeur.

Bergfors was impressive and skated hard, a welcome addition to the forwards. And Murphy while he gave up a couple of bad giveaways had some promising shots and chances.

Peters... ugh can they give him the Shanahan service and ship him out?

I'm somewhat disappointed at some of the signings I see with other teams and their early dividends... Gionta... Gaborik, Dubinsky...

Early success like these guys on other teams is what the Devils need to regain confidence.

We need a better power-play and we need to start generating offence from 4 lines, not 1. Once that happens, and once everyone gets used to playing with each other, we will start dominating.

With the lineup that we sent out last night, I think we should be satisfied if we can get offense from two lines. When Elias returns, however, everything changes.

as far as flyers fans go, i just read in the local paper that JVR had 100 friends and family at the game. sucks, but we may have to get used to that.

overall, the game was lousy, but i thought there were some bright spots, particularly our forwards, who i thought played alright. emery has come out strong these past two games. i think we just need to give these guys time to gel, and getting patty back ASAP won't hurt either.

in my opinion, it was our defense, which is criminally average, and marty not being marty that will ultimately be the downfall of this team. i knew we were in trouble when i saw how happy everybody was with the oduya signing. he's a 3rd pairing guy, yet he's supposedly one of our better d-men, which says everything we need to know about this group. losing shanny wasn't so bad this offseason, it was not improving our defense that will ultimately hurt us.

Find one team that Oduya is a "3rd pairing guy". For chrissakes, we lose one game and our team all magically turns into doggy-doo-doo.

it would make a better argument for you to believe it, but this was not based on one game. i watched every game last season too. and the season before that etc...

i was never the fan of oduya that everyone else is. and i wasn't as excited by his signing this year as a lot of people. he's not a top d-man, just on a team with average defenseman he stands out. and i don't think he stands out that much at all.

also, i didn't say the team played like doggy doo. i complimented our forwards for the game they played last night, even though there is room for improvement, which i think over time will come.

Marty can you say the word "ownership"?????

"Not really his best game," Lemaire said. "It's kind of tough for him. He got a couple of easy goals on him and after that, he was maybe questioning himself a little bit. But hey, it's one game, no big deal."

But Marty says:

" "We couldn't score on our power play, then they get back, they score a goal and from there it just kind of went south on us," Brodeur said."

"Martin Brodeur, who allowed five goals on 27 Flyers shots, said he heard the mock cheers and some boos.

"What's new? When the team isn't playing well they're not going to praise you," he said. "It's disappointing for everybody, a situation like that. I hate to break the news to you, but it's going to happen again. If we don't perform, people won't be happy. That's the nature of everything.""

Marty where is the "we" in "I"? Marty the Devils fans were clapping when you stopped a puck. The boos and mock cheers were directed at you.

It's easy to be a "broken record" when Marty feeds me all the time.

this isn't a good argument. no, he's not a star defenseman, but he is without doubt a top 4 D on just about every team in the league. he's a strong skater who makes good decisions with the puck. losing him would've been deadly, or haven't you seen the contracts being handed out to defensemen recently? he's above average.

i understand how losing him would have hurt the devils. but i think that says more about our lack of talent on d than the fact that oduya is that good. i don't hate the guy, i just don't look at him as one of the leagues better defenseman. above average is about right in describing him.

and i'm not pinning last night's game on him, i'm just pointing out how mediocre our overall defense is.

no, it says something about the lack of talent around the league - just about any team who loses an oduya is going to feel a sting. i suppose you didn't notice the 3.2 million/season contract just handed out to stephane robidas, or the 2.9 million/season given to rostislav klesla. teams don't have rookies that can step in and play as well as johnny oduya.

Besides the terrible game, I had a great time down at The Rock. The crowd was really really loud at the beginning but the lackluster play really sucked the life out of it. I was feeling good about the game until the 5 on 3 and we didn't score then it was downhill from there. It seemed like every time a Devil got the puck a Flyer would come along and take it right from them. They could not pass and they could not keep possession of the puck.

Oh and about the Philth...

I was walking infront of the practice rink before the game and their fan group bus was unloading and they all had beer in dixie cups and were booing every Devil fan that walked by. So when I walked by they did their boo routine and it was ticking me off that I was getting booed at my own arena so I yelled "1975" and they all shut up. But then this one guy wearing a Lindros shirt who needed a haircut chased after me saying "well atleast the Flyers have won the cup huh? huh?" So I started yelling at him saying "Are you f-ing kidding me? We have won three Stanley Cups, pal. And yeah I was alive to see all of them, which is more than you can say. And do you even remember that the Flyers were up 3-1 in the ECF in 2000 and the Devils came back and beat you in your own building and your buddy Lindros got destroyed by Scotty Stevens and the Devils went on to win the Stanley Cup?" and he said "Ah no dude, Lindros hit Stevens, I was there" :doh1: So I said "Go read an f-ing history book". Then after the game I saw this guy and his fellow fans by 124 humping, slapping, punching each other and pouring beer on eachother. :urg:

You did good! I know some people might read your post and think "why even bother?" because that guy was so clueless. But you are a proud Devils fan who was simply sticking up for your team outside your own building. We can always use more fans like that. Thumbs-up!

It really wasn't. Name all the great scoring chances the Flyers had. Maybe the 4th goal? None of the other goals were good chances and Marty made no big saves so maybe 1 big Flyers chance. I can quickly name 2 fir the Devils. Rolston early in the game and Pandos backhand.

The actual Flyer goals may not have been off of great scoring chances, but they were a result of their dominance in puck-possession and outworking our Defense.

Funny, you would have thought they would have had a big margin in shots on goal then. Why did the Devils outshoot the Flyers 13 to 7 in the 2nd period? What big stops did Marty make? If Marty didn't really make any big stops and most of the Flyers goals were off poor goaltending then weren't the Devils doing something right in not allowing the dominant puck possession and outworking the Devils defenseman to turn into good scoring chances? The shot chart looks pretty similar for both teams as well.

They shot maybe 2 or 3 shots more than us but Marty gave them 4 easy goals and that is the difference...you can't build momentum and try to be dominant when your goalie let a goal every time the other team shoots...its kinda demoralizing to the players.

Just look at Rolston goal...for a moment I thought we were at least scoring 2 more as well as the fans in the arena but 1 minute later Marty lets in another softie...no surprise the players just abandon at that point.

So Marty letting in bad goals means the skaters on the team played poorly? Of course not, those are separate things. The person I was responding to seems to be saying the Devils were outplayed at the skating positions and that isn't true.

He said the Devils defense was outworked and the Flyers were dominant, certainly he isn't the only person the express those views. I'm saying those views are incorrect and the game result rests mostly on Marty but some people can't seem to separate the scoreboard from what happened on the ice.

I think we all feel like we played a bad game but we have to stop carrying on and on and on. After one game half our this board is speculating that we will end up in last, not make the playoffs, and self destruct. Marty did have a bad night but I don't think you should question one of the best, if not the best, goalie in NHL history. Even though we got beat there were a lot of good things.

Bergfors--Looked amazing and was hustling to every puck and has great chances.

Rolston--Looked like he could reach 30 goals.

Pandolfo--Was hustleing to every puck and was great on the PK.

Overall we lost, but a lot good things happened. Lets just start with a new slate tomorrow against the Rangers. Jacques will fix this team in time!

I agree with you but my point is that at some moments in the game we could have built on some momentum but those softies kinda break the rhythm and demoralize the players...but when I look at our players in the offensive end and the defensive end we did play and good or let say average game.

We couldn't get a puck past emery early, which killed our momentum. Then the softies hurt. But its not like marty has never had a bad game before, usually a great game comes after his bad ones. I think we need some better direction on the PP, and some better play in front of the net.

No way man. This makes to much sense. Don't you understand this team sucks? They will be lucky to not finish 15th in conference. They'll never score more then 2 goals and what you witnessed last night in the FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON will continue to happen across the next 81.

On a serious note I just have to shake my head at some of the things that you read about this team. Nobody is expecting people to feel good about losing but if the internet (Devils forums and such) is any indicator of the overall view of the fan base then it has really gotten to a point where even losing one game is unacceptable. I guess supporting a successful team can do that but it just seems that there is such a lack of perspective when it comes to fans of this team. Players are not allowed to make mistakes or have off nights and one loss results in mass hysteria. The sad part is that should the Devils whip the Rangers tomorrow you can pretty much store the Cup in Prudential Centers basement. But heaven forbid if they lose tomorrow. It will get nuts. I cant vouch for fans of other teams because I don't follow any other teams but Bi-polar really comes to mind when I think of Devils fans.
