everybody knows brodeur is great though, i think people just get too hard on him for some games.

but mottau on the other hand is always the first guy people look to scratch out of the devils' lineup..

Greene and Halischuk better stay in the line-up. They were both very solid tonight, especially Greene.

+1.

Both played very well and need to stay in the line up for sure. Pandolfo played very well too. The defense still needs to work on their positioning because that second period was just awlful. Too many SOG (41) given up by the Devils tonight.

As long as we're bitching about the defense (something I'm fairly sure we'll be doing often this year), why the hell is Lemaire still using the same pairings Sutter used? Can we please put Martin with White and Mottau with Oduya or vice versa and get a puck-mover with a defensive guy please? I don't get it at all.

in the 3rd period it was Martin/Salvador and Oduya/Greene

it's a step at least.....

Now that Weekes is gone he's got to have a new whipping boy for the season....

Now everytime we win it will be because Andy Greene was in the lineup.

Well, at least we start this ("battle of the mediocre defenseman") thing early this season.

I noticed that... but still not enough balance on all the pairings.

I don't think it's disrespect. He's a perfect 7th defenseman. He can play with anyone on the team, cause he's willing to stay at home, but not horrific on offense. He doesn't need to play every day. He's predictable. Most importantly, though, he has a low upside -- you can live without him being in the lineup. I think he should get decent playing time, cause Martin, White and Sal are all injury prone, and Greene and Murphy are small, but I think we should set up 3 good pairings without Motts, then shuffle him in and out.

I'd like to see Greene play for someone other than Sutter. I think Sutter fvcked with his head a lot and screwed up his development. The kid still shows flashes of upside. I don't know enough about Murphy, and if he's not good, we can always move Mottau back in, but I think he needs more games before we can just bench him.

40 saves and a win in a shootout and everybody just looks at the 3 goals. Apparently 82 shutouts is all that will please the masses.

As for Mottau, I don't know why he can't get any respect. Game in and game out, you know what you're getting from him. He's solid and making near league minimum. Why someone would prefer to have BOTH Murphy and Greene in the lineup with Mottau scratched is beyond me.

Agreed.

I also agree that Andy should get a one last chance under a different coach than Sutter.

However, there are people here that would put a chimpanzee in the lineup every night if the team won the last game with that same lineup of personnel.

You have to laugh at the folks here that think that Mike Mottau, Rod Pelley, or Shannahan are the lynchpins on which the success or failure of this team lies upon.

Agreed. I just think Mottau is the perfect 7th d-man, and I don't mean that as an insult. I'd like to see us rotate 7 all season.

If Fraser can do it, I'd rather have him than Murphy or Greene, but that's a huge if, and I'm trying not to get that far ahead.

Funny you pretty much described Greene to a tee instead of Mottau. Especially since Mottau's been an every-day player pretty much since he joined the Devils, I don't know if he can handle sitting for two weeks, then going into the lineup. I know Greene can, that's why I don't mind the current arrangement with him and Murphy.

Mottau is better than a seventh defenseman, though he's probably a back-pairing d-man on a good D I still think he gets hurt by having an even slower slug with him (White). Put him with Oduya or Martin and he'd be valued a bit more highly I'd think.

Greene's got better speed and a better shot. He also played the best hockey of his career his rookie season (pre Sutter) when he didn't have to worry about his job. When he's been looking over his shoulder, he's been mediocre. I see more mediocrity if he's a 7th d, but those flashes of talent make me think there's more to him. I'd like to see him get the shot to develop it. Maybe I'm wrong, because he's sure never put it together for long, but I don't see us finding out if he doesn't get a spot in the lineup that he really doesn't have to worry about for a few weeks. Even when he was a full time player last year, Lou was looking for someone else.

Mottau scares me because he's basically a finesse d-man with no speed. Fast, talented teams can burn him, as Carolina showed last year. If Greene/Murphy fail, then he's an all right back pairing guy, but best case scenario he's the first guy we sit. I'll admit pairing him with White is a disaster, but I'd still feel better with someone else in the lineup more often.

Also, like I said, I don't want him sitting for weeks. I'd rather have him working his way through the line up to keep Martin, Sal and White especially fresh, since all of them have been hurt in the past.

mottau is much better than andy greene. andy greene is a prototypical 7th defenseman - he does some stuff well, but he also does a lot of stuff poorly. he is weak in front of the net and gets beat in the corners, which doesn't make up for his slightly above average offensive potential. why mottau is thought of a 7th D at this point is only because you can't 'see' defense, but he's probably better than salvador at this point.

no one is going to find a hidden gem in andy greene. at best he's a back-pairing D.

Again I think that's more because of the ill-fated pairing. And fwiw it was Greene and Havelid that got hemmed in their own end on the tying goal in Game 7. Yeah White and Mottau were on the ice for the winner but that was all MB30 coughing up a hairball.

I don't even see above average offensive potential. People think Greene can be an offensive D because of one goal in the playoffs his rookie year and he's got an okay shot. But what among his actual production leads anyone to believe that Greene will ever be even a consistent 35-40 point defenseman? He had 9 points in 49 games last year, with zero on the PP.

If anything, Murphy has the offensive potential that we haven't seen on the blueline in at least a couple years, which is why I want to get more of a look at him. Our offensive output from our d-men has been embarassing since Nieds and Raf walked out the door, and Greene's been here throughout that.

I know I'm the guy always ringing this bell, ....but I do it because it amazes me how many here (despite the number of chances he's been given to produce for 2 years) think that this guy is just a howitzer of an offensive D man if only given the right situation. Like a flower that never seems to blossom. and there is the argument that "he had those 3 points in that stream of three games before.....". Fact is, he's never shown enough offensive upside to make up for a lack of a defensive game.

Meanwhile, Mottau makes his fair share of mistakes, but people also quickly forget his outlet passes to Gio that tied some of those CAR playoff games, or his opening goal in the series. In addition to the fact that he's a cheap pieace that's managed to remain consistent for 2 seasons now.

Mottau's still Ken Sutton to me -- no insult, but I don't love him in the top 6.
