Insult To Injury

22 posts in this topic

Well if Game 5 wasn't bad enough after the game I found out that my wife's car had been broken in to. Worse yet is the Newark Cops didn't want me to file a report and said they wont even investigate it. I had to badger them just to write something up. I know a few people that have told me before that the Cops try and persuade people from reporting crimes to make the area seem safe even when it's not at all!!!!

Good Job Vanderbeek!!! You suckered the city in to building us an arena and now you have Booker and the Cops in your pocket!

Vanderbeek has a lot of credit for this, but I think the Newark cops are just as useful as a fifteen cent credit remaining on your Saks Fifth Avenue gift card...

Cottage street..1 block from the Court House.

I've heard that it happens all the time down there and I know my car wasn't the only one that was robbed. They wait until the game starts and then walk around the cars and if the coast is clear the cop showed me the shove move they do on the window to bust it open. He said he wouldn't even question the neighbors if they saw or heard anything as that's just not what they do.

The Lots also have break Ins which is why all of them have signs that say not responsible or park at your own risk.

sucks.

you have anything in there that motivated them to punch the window out? I used to go to school in Newark and I wouldn't take "free" street parking when they offered it (normally around the holidays) for that reason. I wouldn't street park my car in NYC either though, unless I was in a place where I could see it

That's why I've been so reluctant to park on the street - my car, with it's Devils stickers and license plate frames and decals - makes it obvious that I'm there for the game, and therefor won't be at my car for a good three to four hours.

That's mighty fvcked up that they weren't interested in having you report it. I'm hoping since you didn't mention it that you didn't lose too much of value at least?

I've gone to about 40 games/events at the Rock and each time I parked on the street.

I saved 40 games X $20 = $800

But now I need to get a new window so their goes all the saving. My advice is to stick to a lot with fences around it and avoid the street and the open surface lots.

i lived in one of the sh!ttiest neighborhoods in chicago -- crime infested, tons of gangs, the whole nine. i find the best way to avoid getting your car broken into is NOT leaving anything out that looks tempting to steal. hell, don't even leave a cd on the seat or an auxiliary cable danging. it just lures them in.

and yeah, i was driving a brand new NICE car too so it's not like they'd just skip over me because i had a junker.

regardless, that sucks. sorry to hear.

it could have been a theft "buffet" though, where they just broke a bunch of windows and hoped for the best

I heard this happened in that area during the Ranger game meltdown last month as well. Someone said that it's actually people who work for the lots doing this to get you to park in their lots. Of course the cops are in on it.

yeah def but regardless it's still a good rule to go by. i was lucky that my car was never broken into -- i'd check chicago's crime data website once every few weeks and just see SO many car thefts or cars broken into. it was ridiculous. either that or drugs lol. ...yeah, my neighborhood sucked. hell, i had a major gang member living in my BUILDING. my roommate inadvertently got him arrested once. we both lived in fear for a good couples weeks after that one ha.

Wow I parked on cottage street also. Thanks for sharing this and again sorry to hear, I'll definitely be parking in the lots from now on. I only park in the lots like 1/10 of the time to save money but after reading this I realize it's just not worth it.

In all honesty you can't really blame the cops all that much...

I had my car broken into at a movie theatre one time, the guy came, knew I was bummed and explained to me about how if they do a clean break of the window and there's no blood, it's basically impossible for them to find someone. And that was in a small town, imagine trying to find that person in Newark, it really would be impossible.

Sorry for your mishaps but if you think about it there really isn't a way to find the guy unless he's on a security camera or something, even then it'd probably be tough.

ouch yeah that def sucks. I could easily drive to Newark, but I take the train only because of worrying for my car. A few dollars for train tickets gives me peace of mind and is a trade-off to worrying if your car will be broken into or stolen during a devils game.

Well can't say I told ya so but...I wonder if it were Flyers fans though, because I haven't heard anyone posted anything like this during other games(except the last Ranger game). Leave your stuff in your trunk and the doors locked, don't care if it's on the street or garage.

Sorry to disillusion you, and I know it's no comfort while you're picking broken glass out of the upholstery. But it's not just Newark. Happens even in remote places. I parked my car to hike the Long Trail from the Lincoln Gap Road (closed in winter) between the hamlets of Warren and Lincoln, Vermont. Was gone a few hours, and came back to find someone had broken into all the parked cars in the lot. They left behind the rock they used to smash the passenger window, and then left the glove box open. They got nothing, but it was still a nuisance having to figure out which county sherriff had jurisdiction over the site. Miles from the nearest habitation, so somebody actually had to drive there deliberately to vandalize half a dozen cars. I don't think they got enough to pay for the cost of gas that day, but these lowlifes mostly do it for the fun of smashing something. (PS -- the kindly folks at the sherriff's office said this kind of thing happens almost every day in the summer...)
