Devils' Kovalchuk will test market

I love PK's Avatar. Just pure awesome. I think that's who Lou turns into when he's resigning free agents.

Lou: I AM CORNHOLIO!! I need you to sign for T.P. so I can call you a bunghole!

Kovy: What?

Lou: Are you from Nicaragua?

Kovy: No, I am from Russia.

Lou: Are you threatening me?

Its funny, every year numerous people always complain that Luo doesnt go out and sign the big money guys.

The problem is, when you dish out huge money with multiple year contracts, which is exactly what you need to do in free agency, you end up with team with less depth.

Look at the two teams in the Stanley cup, incredibly deep at forward and defense. Then look at the a team like the Rangers, whom have roughly the same cap, much less depth, and exactly one line that can score. The difference between the teams? The stanley cup teams built from within and through trades, the Rangers built much of their team through free agency. In fact, the biggest problem the Blackhawks have is Hossa and Campbells huge contracts which is going to kill their future depth.

The last Stanley cup team the Devils had in 03 was pretty deep, although I may be wrong, I cant think of one big name brought in through free agency on that team.

Funny how the Flyers seemed to check the Devils pretty well and while they did go to the penalty box numerous times, they still managed to win. The game overall is not really much softer than it used to be, just not quite as tightly played. White refuses to do check simply because he cannot. A person who is nearly blind in one eye to me is disabled from a hockey point of view and should not be playing. He was never on this team originally to be a puck mover but instead was a physical presence. Now, he is not even that. He is useless waste of salary and he should have retired.

they didn't check the Devils well, sh!t, Pronger didn't really even lay anyone out in the course of the series. they denied them the puck. there's a huge difference. they blocked long-range shots and got in front of the Devils forwards in front of the net, taking away the advantage the forward has if they're "posting up" the defenseman. and the game is far softer. Brian Gionta as a garbageman? he'd be a splotch on the ice before the lockout if he camped out there every shift.

And how do you deny the other team the puck while playing defense? Well a lot of that has to do with being physical. The Devils and including White were as soft as could be while the Flyers were more active and more physical.

BYE BYE Kovy, this all but confirms it. Once Lou goes public and it sounds bad, it always is!

someone on this board saying that kovy will still sign with the Devils now in 3...2...1...

crosby: 15 goals

malkin: 14 goals

rest of team: 50 goals

yeah two guys scoring 36% of the goals is some great depth. and yes it was the loss of gill and scuderi that caused marc andre fleury to play terrible. the penguins are basically a two player team, their depth is not good at all.

GWG:

Kennedy: 3

Malkin 3

Talbot 2

Guerin 2

Crosby 2

See Ville Lenio and David Bowlen this year. Quality depth will trump elite regular season scorers in a playoff marathon every time (see playoffs 2009-10: Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Crosby, Malkin).

A good defense can make a mediocre goalie look like a star. The difference for Fleury this year was that his defense went from very good quality depth, to overplaying defensemen who just weren't as good defensively.

There are things you could point to as examples of this team being soft. This isn't one of them. The Devils defense, with the exception of Paul Martin, panics under a forecheck and makes poor decisions with the puck. Colin White, Mike Mottau, Bryce Salvador and Martin Skoula are all poor puck-movers. Andy Greene is getting better, but he gets outworked along the boards very easily. And forget about Mark Fraser ... he was atrocious.

The Flyers forecheck dominated the Devils' defensemen and their first-pass abilities. And even though "check" is part of the word "forecheck," it has very little to do with being physical. Vladimir Zharkov was a surprisingly good forechecker for us this year, and he couldn't intimidate a newborn.

Honestly, I thought watching Kovy was fun last year, but did not felt he contributed too much to the team other than help increase attendance. This situation with Kovy is actually a win-win for the devils. If the Devils manage to sign him for an amount that is will not cripple the team, then we got a 50-goal scorer. If we lose him, then we have some salary free to help plug the holes in our defense and at center. I think the 2nd situation would be preferable for the team's on-ice performance. The only way Lou can screw this up is if we overpay for him.

Doesnt really say much, just talking about how many teams would love to add Kovalchuk. and how he would make any team into a cup contender.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/story/toronto-maple-leafs-could-be-good-fit-for-ilya-kovalchuk-060710

Even St. Petersburg of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League is rumored to have offered a two-year deal worth more than $10 million per season.

Kovalchuk reportedly intends to treat this situation professionally and consider all his options. He’ll examine the caliber of the teams, weigh the different offers plus take into account which city would best suit his family.

It’s anticipated the bulk of the free-agent offers could come from Western Conference clubs, but one Eastern team might be a good fit for Kovalchuk: the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Is he kidding???? Toronto?? Burke is trying to change the culture in Toronto, Kovalchuk is nowhere near the type of player Burke would want.

Western teams? LA has a powerhouse of young talent in they need to sign and Kovalchuk doesn't fit what they are building.

What about Phoenix? lots of cap space... and Kovy would be a great player to get people in seats out there to help save the franchise. Plus the coyotes have a decent team and played well for most of last season....

manta -- you're as bad as LD with Brodeur! Relax even!! No amount of ranting on your part will rid the devils of Kovalchuk if Lou wants him to stay. The right won to say "whew! Glad I called THAT one" if he goes will be hollow as well - because those who like him will just say Lou was too cheap and won't assign it to sh!tty play on Kovalchuk's part.

We get how it is you think he plays, and I, for one, respectfully disagree.

The problem with Phoenix is the arena is in the middle of nowhere. They are losing money regardless. They are not going to lose more by signing Kovalchuk.

I would agree. They have a crappy arena, on the verge of moving and not even close to being a playoff team.

That's fine, but I am not sure where I said anything about the Devils or Lou in talking about Toronto or the Kings.

yeah, i just cannot see this as at all possible - i mean WHY would he do this? just stay in atlanta - they're giving you more than the islanders would and you're actually closer to getting somewhere than with the islanders.

it's got to be a decent team that will pay him at least 7.75MM for 6-8 years.

Here is another article about KHL offering a contract to Kovalchuk..... just more speculation but.....

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2010/06/07/sp-kovalchuk-khl.html

Reports say Ilya Kovalchuk will be offered a whopping contract to join SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) next season.

Sport-Express, a Russian newspaper, reported that the team plans to make the New Jersey Devils left winger an offer worth $42 million US over three years. The reports have not be verified.

Atlanta has absolutely nothing going for it. No one has ever wanted to stay there. The Islanders have NY attached to the name, which automatically makes it a much more desirable location than Atlanta.

I want to know if Lou has a plan B. I mean I know he does I just want to know what it is.

Obviously they're looking for a high profile player and they're willing to spend some money.

So do they try to trade for Malkin?

Go for Marleau?

Trade for another high profile player?

My guess is Kovy walks and they re-sign Martin and that's all they do. And they hire a defensive minded coach. But that's just the pessimism of a long time Devils fan talking there.

i know you won't be relieved of this absurd notion, and that it's impossible to prove a negative, but: the islanders will not sign ilya kovalchuk. yes, the islanders have NY attached to the name, but what about when they have KC or LV or WPG attached to the name?

Unless you're a complete idiot (which Kovalchuk is not, and even if he were, his agent is not), you know that the New York referred to in New York Islanders is not the New York referred to in New York Rangers. No one's getting conned into going there because they see the glitz and glamor associated with NYC.
