2010-2011 Referee Tracker

MDPucks

Recommended Posts

Its that time of year again where we dust off the old skates, tape up our sticks, and the hockey bags only smell like low tide versus Staten Island. It also signals my yearly contribution to this board tracking the Devils record with certain referees. Again the disclaimer is that you need to allow trends to develop which means time. Second this isn't a "blame the referee" thread designed for typical fan gripes whether warrented or not. Its a tough job, we all know that some refs are better than others and that certain refs have styles that mesh with the Devils style and some that clash. And although they travel the entire league the NHL does regionalize referees which is why the Devils tend to see Paul Devorski & Stephen Walkom (Pennsylvania) and Chris Rooney (Boston) a lot.

Are the skips in the refs' numbers due to some number being retired?

Referees use #'s 2-49

Linesmen use #'s 50-98

Most of the number gaps are from referees who recently retired (#2 = Kerry Fraser, #6 = Dan Marouelli). You notice that three younger officials are changing their numbers from the 40's (reserved for younger and split league referees) to numbers in the teens. Justin St. Pierre's new #12 was used by Don Koharski prior to his retirement two seasons ago and Brian Pochmara's new #16 was used by Rob Shick so these numbers are reused after a year or two. To my knowledge there have been no referee numbers that have been retired. While not official #72 hasn't been worn by an NHL Linesman since Stephane Provost died in a tragic off-season car accident in Florida 4 years ago. #60 also hasn't been worn since North Bergen's Pat Dapuzzo was forced into retirement early after sustaining horrific facial injuries after being struck by a skate in Philadelphia 2 years ago.

This is the link to Chris Botta's article on Pat Dapuzzo last October: http://nhl.fanhouse.com/2009/10/27/pat-dapuzzo-reveals-anguish-depression-after-skate-severs-his-face/

One thing I wish the Devils would do at Prudential Center would be a small area honoring players, coaches, referees, etc. who are natives of NJ and Dapuzzo would certainly be a prominant one there.

Updated 12/4.

I think the Devils have had enough of Mike Leggo this season with the 0-5 spot.

With good reason, the officiating sucked yesterday. League wide it blows since the lockout.

Thanks for the time to do it, of course power play difference would be a nice addition! HAHAHA.
