GDT: Lou's Little Beauties v. a Talented Team

I just can't see us as that bad. It can't be. I know we've not looked good lately and tonight doesn't help either, but I really don't think we're top 5 bad, top 10 maybe, not top 5 though. Maybe we can get in the top 5 if we dump Ryder, Zid and Jagr at the deadline, but even then we still have Cam, Elias and Henrique along with a decent defense and a good goalie that will win us a few games so long as we don't get shutout every night, lol.

We're really pretty bad and Elias is close to being done.

Never good when Zubrus was by far the best Devils player.

LOL. Didn't have much competition. Gomez maybe. Sislo had one good shift. Elias got a gift rebound goal and did nothing else. Jagr looked awful. Ryder was his terrible self again.

Doesn't matter cause the draft is more important imo.

Yup. Why it's just as important for Lou to sell off a couple vets and recoup some picks to use there or repurpose them in a trade for young of close to NHL talent.

We're certainly not good, but we're not Edmonton losing 10 straight or Buffalo who is icing a bunch of scrubs and some young guys with no experience type bad. I think it'd be hard with our defense and Schneider in net to end up picking top 5.

Our D and Schneider aren't exactly playing at the top of their game as evidenced by offensive dynamo Jay Beagle completely undress the entire D and Schneider on goal #2 tonight.

Edmonton will get its act together at some point especially with the head of Canada Hockey now running the hockey ops.  I also don't believe Eakins is the right coach for that team.  Buffalo has a lot more young talent than we do and while they may stink right now, they play very hard.  The Devils will be right behind them in the draft order with probably the Canes finishing ahead of us.  But we're not that far off them.  We also havent really had a debilitating injury to one of our key guys.  Injuries are a part of the NHL game and you will lose a player here or there for a stretch.  You lose players.  Our problem is we have zero quality depth and no young talent that can fill in.  Neither Boucher or Matteau have shown anything.

Devils have neither young talent, nor do they play tough or consistent in any aspect.  The PK goes into the tank, then its the PP, then its the forwards who cant score, then its the defense.  The whole organization needs to be cleaned out, starting in the front office.  Lou and Conte need to join Jacques down in Florida.

I'm not saying we're looking great, just that we're not terribad.

Right now only Edmonton is a disaster.  Even the Canes and Sabres have looked competitive lately and I don't see Hextall and Ed Snider letting their season go down the tubes, not with the forward corps they have.  The Jackets are starting to get some guys back and I believe will make a run at respectability.

We are right in that group though.  We are a struggling team that is going to end up finishing poorly.

I'm sorry, I just don't see us as being worse than Edmonton, Carolina, Buffalo, Arizona, Colorado, etc. Especially once some teams start selling off assets. We may not be far ahead, but I seriously doubt we crack the top 5 without something major happening trade or injury wise.

Hey Bud.  You're entitled to your opinion and it's fine to have relatively a bit more optimism than the rest of us.  But we are not a good team.  Arguing where we might finish is a bit semantical at this point, I'll even admit.

The one reason I am so pessimistic is I can see our situation worsening still.  I'm not sure how Edmonton, Carolina, or Buffalo gets worse.  Buffalo seems to be turning a corner.  Edmonton can't get out of the mud.  Carolina seems to be trying to tank.

Colorado and Arizona are a bit like us.  I feel extremely confident we end up in Top 8 of the draft and I think we will end up in Top 5 or 6, but again it's all semantical at this point.

We just got dominated at home by a non-playoff team.  Yeah we are terribad.  And it's only going to get worse if Camm's on the shelf again.

The fossil crew up front has outlived their usefulness.  Scratching Josefson when you have no speed up front is mind-bogglingly horrible and yet not surprising from this head coach.  I'm waiting for Larsson to have the flu for two months and dissapear too just like last year

We're absolutely awful and like I've said before if we somehow manage to miraculously make the playoffs it'll be a waste and if we finish middle of the pack it will be a waste. Best outcome right now is to finish bottom five. There is no one that has come close the past two seasons that has replaced Kovy or Parise. If we finish top 5 we can either draft a solid talent or trade that pick to bring another Zach or Kovy to NJ. Right now this team is totally backed up with sh!t and we need to flush it all out. The sooner Lou realizes this and sheds the Jagrs and Zidlickys the better in the long run.

I think this is possible but I think unless Schneider gets hurt that it's real unlikely for the Devils to end up in the top 3.  Their goaltending is just too good.  And they're going to get on a hot streak at some point, they're playing 50/50 hockey right now and just coming out on the short end too often.  That does turn around.

Buffalo is still atrocious, Colorado's not good, Carolina isn't either, Columbus is way below NJ, etc.

With possibly the exception of Buffalo those other three clubs have tremendous young talent unlike NJ who has little to nothing. Here's hoping BUF, COL CAR and CBJ turn it around. We need a top 3 pick the most.

At this point I'm done with the whole 'Cory is so far above average he'll keep us afloat' meme.  He's been awful this season.  Goal one was shaky and goal two was the easiest pokecheck imaginable and he didn't do it, and he knew it too cause he then tried to pokecheck one fifty feet from the net after that   It's bad when you're being outplayed by a 42-year old guy who couldn't even get a job the first two months (yes I went there).  Even Pete called him out a little in the postgame.

Brodeur is outplaying him now?  Brodeur has played 2 games.  Schneider is still at .915 which is of course way better than Brodeur has been the last 4 years.  The idea that Schneider has been awful is totally ridiculous - he's given up some tough luck goals and some bad goals, but he's still rocking an average SV% despite playing all but 1 game.

He's given up a bad goal almost every single game, he's actually been worse than the numbers which aren't impressive.

Average save percentage?  Please...THAT's supposed to be a positive?  Average (really below average, he's like 17th or 18th among starting goalies) is not exactly what Cory was 'supposed' to be with his career numbers.

And Marty's basically right off his couch and still giving competitive efforts.  It wouldn't shock me at all if he had better splits than Cory at the end of the year, both because of the teams they're playing on and because Cory's been playing like crap.

Yes, that's supposed to be a positive, because he's given up a lot of fluke-type goals early on here.  That goal that Ward scored off Schneider's back leg, how often does that go in?  How often does Ryan Carter's short handed goal go in?  Cory's had some bad breaks, the kind of thing that isn't sustainable for a goalie.  He's still way way way way way better than Brodeur.

Considering he's played 100 minutes more than the next goalie in TOI, average isn't bad, especially with the team in front of him. Coming into today, he ranked 5th out of the 17 goalies in 5v5 SV% (min 850 minutes). When a goalie plays as much as he is, he's bound to give up a soft goal here and there. Unfortunately, soft goals will stand out more than solid play.

Brodeur's rolled off his couch and put up an .872 SV%. I wouldn't call that competitive.
