ST. PAUL - With only six days remaining until Tuesday's 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline, the rumor mill is working full time, and the Devils keep coming up.

A league source said Tuesday that Devils' general manager Lou Lamoriello has spoken on more than one occasion with Phoenix Coyotes' GM Mike Barnett about left wing Brad May. May, who will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end, missed most of this season after having reconstructive shoulder surgery, but is healthy now, and has four points in his past four games. May, 31, has three goals, four assists, and 25 penalty minutes in 17 contests this season.

The Ottawa Senators, who upped their Eastern Conference lead over the Devils to four points by beating Toronto on Tuesday while New Jersey was losing, 3-2, to Minnesota, have also expressed strong interest in May, who played for Senators' GM John Muckler in Buffalo. The Senators covet the 6-foot-1, 213-pound May for his size and toughness, also valuable assets for the Devils, who are looking to fill that void up front created by Bobby Holik's departure.

According to more than one source, the player that teams keep asking for is rookie forward Mike Rupp. Patrik Elias and Scott Gomez are said to be off limits.

The Coyotes' Minnesota-based scout, Tom Kurvers, a former Devil, attended Tuesday's game.

Talk that the Devils are interested in San Jose Sharks right wing Teemu Selanne also continues to heat up.

Selanne has an option year on his contract after this season for $6.5 million, but the option is his, meaning he can become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he chooses. Selanne, who leads the Sharks with 25 goals and 54 points, recently told a Finnish newspaper he would be open to being traded, particularly with talk in San Jose about the team undergoing a overhaul.

Selanne, who would fit nicely on Gomez's wing in the role previously played by Alexander Mogilny, could come relatively cheap because of his contract situation. Again, Rupp's name has been mentioned.

(Power forwards [if Rupp is one] mostly seem to come into their own a litle later in their careers ie Bertuzzi. If Lou is to make a trade, I hope he considers this before sending Rupp away.)

FRIESEN FIRST TO 20: Jeff Friesen became the Devils' first 20-goal scorer this season with his second-period tally Tuesday. It's the first time he's reached that mark since he had 26 goals in 1999-2000 with San Jose.

"I haven't really looked at 20 goals," Friesen said. "Obviously the last two years have been frustrating and it's not an easy league to score in. There's a lot of good players."

Phoenix is the last remaining team without a 20-goal scorer.

POWER-LESS AGAIN: The Devils went 0-for-3 on the power play to extend their drought to 0-for-21 over the past six games. Their most costly failure came with 8:08 left when the game was still tied 2-2.

Rupp hasn't taken a lot of dump penalties. I don't where his criticism comes from, but some people Giroux is god. Giroux, has been bad not awful, but bad. Rupp has been coming along, and you can see he's improving when he plays with good players, and not Jim and Turner.

Brad May would be great along with Jay and John. I don't know if Tony Amonte is the answer, if that's the rumor.

Elias-Gomez-Amonte

Jamie-Joe-Jeff

May-Madden-Pandolfo

Hopefully Brylin-Pascal-Turner

Rupp didn't have a great game. I think he's on the wrong line and really needs to be on the fourth so he can learn the game.

We'll see what Lou has up his sleeve and then maybe Rupp will get the time and space to develop before people like me jump on him for not being what Gomer needs.

Hmmm, let's see. If Turner goes to clear out some room for Gionta and plays with Gomez (if we really aren't getting Elias back there), then Rupp, Bicek and Rheaume sound pretty good. But then you've got McKenzie, who's gonna be in there. Grrrr... it's like a puzzle with pieces not fitting.

Rupp at this point of his career is a good 4th liner but not above that (no that doesn't mean trade him, to me it just reeks that he is gonna take the Holik path up the ladder without the stupid comments.. I hope)

If Selanne wants out of there.. ugh... I dunno, but at least the guy wants to win now, and keeping him for next year is an expensive bet (and if he costs us affording Nieuwendyk I don't wanna do it).. two weeks ago i'd have said no way but I do think we need one more scorer

not sure if brad may has all of what we are looking for.....he has been playing well, has size and strength. I watched him the other night. I thought , I bet he will come up in trade rumors for the Devils. sure enough.

anyway.....the "butterflies" are right on time for this time of year as we approach closer to the trade deadline with little idea of what will actually happen. they are a bit stronger then normal, primarily cause the talent that has been mentioned this year is so great.

I wouldn't mind getting May but not at the cost of Rupp. He's worth a mid-round draft pick and no more.

Rupp didn't have a great game last night, and the initial impact of being in the NHL seems to have worn away for him. BUT that doesn't mean he won't still develop over the next year or so and I'd like to see him do it with this organization.

Don't worry guys, this NothingFace is just KingDevil making his return to the board.

His complete reversals of logic are funny for about 2 seconds.

I think the Devils would be nuts to deal Rupp. This guy wouldn't have been worth a damn thing back in December, now he's a hot commodity? I actually thought he had a MUCH better game last night than he did on Saturday.. he reminds me a lot of Brad Isbister..

May doesn't fit on the Devils except to spell McKenzie. He's never been a scorer in his career, and they need a guy on the right side similar to May only a little less goon and a little more hands.

May hasn't scored more then 11 goals inn the lat deade and isn' the answer..he'd be a part of a bigger trade.

Doan (interesting)

Briere(hm)

grit-

Former Devil Alert.Pellerin
