  1. Bingo, that and his possession numbers (specifically zone exits and entries) are the key. Hockey IQ can be learned to an extent by playing with the right players and within a system conducive to a skill set - which the Devils deploy and McLeod has. The league has become more and more about speed, which he has in spades, plus the size to back it up. Keller and Jost were the big prizes at #11, but they didn't get there. That's disappointing, but all things considered, squeezing another third and nabbing McLeod is certainly not a bad haul for the first round. And there are still trade targets out there to be had. If the Devils could work some magic to snag DeBrincat in the second round I'd be thrilled with those first two picks (hey, at least we're reasonably assured they won't take another goalie).
  2. If you're referring to Malakov/McGillis, that's slightly different in that they were bad contracts - not "dead" contracts. But that's just semantics. Still valid.
  3. Great article by Chere, which is like seeing Haley's comet: http://www.nj.com/devils/index.ssf/2014/12/its_time_for_the_devils_to_thank_lou_lamoriello_and_show_him_the_door.html Myabe I haven't been paying attention lately, but kinda surprising such a strong stance coming from Chere. Was never really Lou's lap dog by any means, but always seemed to be parotting the company line.
  4. Would love Statsny. Devs would have to overpay wildly.
  5. You're reading too much into it. All forms of international play have always been a very big deal to Russian players - especially the World Champsionships. If the Red Wings had missed the playoffs, you would be hearing very similar comments from Datsyuk.
  6. ... this and also the timing of the start of the season. VBK has always said in the past that attendance picks up after the NFL season ends and both the Jets and Giants missed the playoffs, so the NFL season ended here around New Years. Plus the Nets are gone, but I don't know how much of an impact that has. But the Devils have been discounting tickets - and just giving some away to STH's - as well. Frankly, it's something they should've been doing for years. Better to get something from a fan in a seat than nothing from an empty seat.
  7. Dubinsky was third man in - end o' story. Doesn't matter there were fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh men in after that. But, yeah, I'd be pissed if that were a Dev, too.
  8. I don't think he's "destroying the game." I just think he's a tool and that this was funny.
  9. You need to be a member of Gilt to view. http://www.gilt.com/sale/men/sean-avery-work-outf
  10. Me thinks Mr. Oduya suffers from delusions of grandeur.
  11. The league didn't necessarily provide guidelines, but the arbitrator did. From Lou as per TG on 8/9: “While we do not currently have a contract with Ilya Kovalchuk, discussions have resumed and we are hopeful that a contract will be reached that meets with the principles in Arbitrator Bloch’s award and the NHL’s approval.”
  12. You've just been itching to unleash that one.
  13. Correct. Jofesson and Tedenby both signed pro contracts - so NJ or Albany are the only places they'll be going (unless traded).
  14. Well written and well thought out article. But I think we'd all agree that between Parise and Kovalchuck, the choice has to be Parise. More well rounded player, digs and plays hard on every single shift, actually showed he could be dangerous and responsible on the PK - and he's younger. A point I take issue with is this quote she clearly took out of context from Chere's article: “Ilya Kovalchuk’s freewheeling individual freedom and quarterbacking on the power play did not sit well with others.” The players weren't upset with Kovalchuck - they were upset with Lemaire and his decision to let him play every single second of every single PP and to make sure the puck was on his stick as often as possible. We saw how well that worked out (4 for infinity in the first round).
