Official 2014 New York Mets Thread

So-so start for Syndergaard last night:  5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 102 pitches thrown.

Some comments from a scout in attendance...I don't go that crazy over them, in that he might have had different things to say had he seen Syndergaard's 7/6 or 8/1 starts:

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/baseballinsider/scouting-ny-mets-top-prospect-noah-syndergaard-blog-entry-1.1896262

And if you're a hardcore sabes guy, there's some numbers that you can use to be optimistic about Syndergaard:

1) His FIP (Field Independent Pitching) is 3.84...much lower than his 4.79 ERA

2) His BABIP is .383.  That is very high, and I get the feeling that the 51s' overall team defense doesn't do their players any favors.

3) His BB% and K% are still strong.

Basically, the one number that has hurt Noah is his hits allowed, and it seems like a nice chunk of that really comes to down meh defense and some bad luck.  #3 shows that he doesn't seem to be letting any of it go to his head or affect his game...if his BB% started going up significantly, I'd be concerned.

And this:

http://nypost.com/2014/08/06/no-guarantee-mets-will-call-up-noah-syndergaard/

Don't know if the Mets are thinking six-man, but if they aren't, and Colon doesn't get moved and everyone stays healthy, I'd rather Syndergaard keep starting in the minors (even the PCL) than get promoted and shifted to the 'pen.

And the end of the season should be the end for Amateur Terry.  He's a stammering dope:

Kudos to Sandy on this one:

AdamRubinESPN: Wilmer Flores to now get good look at shortstop, Terry Collins says. Conferred with Sandy Alderson and made decision.

re: Noah - wasn't good last night but yeah, no reason to be concerned. Underlying numbers are good, the environment is just brutal. They really should go to a 6-man until they can dump Colon.

Flores is the right move.  Maybe it doesn't work out, but I don't need to see a .225 hitting/.276 slugging SS who now very clearly will not be here next season getting most of the ABs for the rest of 2014.  It's hard to believe that Tejada put up OB%s of .361 for May, .359 for June, and .373 for July (I know hitting ahead of the pitcher helped him a LOT...10 of his 11 IBB came batting 8th)...but unfortunately, the only thing Ruben was kind of decent at for a guy who doesn't hit much was getting to first base.  He's a singles hitter who doesn't single.

But really COMMIT to Flores for a while, even if it starts ugly.  If TC goes running back to Tejada if Flores has a rough first week, I'm gonna be pissed.

Nice job by Mejia to cleanup what was mostly Eveland's mess, although he was very lucky Sizemore's hit didn't go out. The Stomp!

200 career wins for Bartolo Colon, if you're into that sort of thing.

And Chris Young has been DFA'd, finally. den Dekker being recalled. TC says he'll play LF, Kirk will essentially be an extra outfielder now, EY Jr. plays vs some LHP.

Maybe the most encouraging thing in den Dekker's excellent numbers this year: he's striking out in 17% of his plate appearances. From 2012-2013 in AAA, he struck out in 26% of his plate appearances. That's a pretty substantial improvement. Makes me a little more optimistic that some of what he's doing in the PCL isn't totally about the friendly environmental factors.

I mean yeah, he's probably still a 5th outfielder/AAA shuttle guy, but why not give him a look? He's killing it AAA with a hint of real improvement in weakest area. As a guy whose CF defense has been lauded since his college days, he and Lagares could catch a ton of flyballs between them in LF-CF. The alternatives suck.

Good riddance to CY. Guy got chance after chance after chance...his rope could've been cut much earlier but it seemed like he would always hit a home run or two to give himself another 3 weeks or so. He'll be playing in Japan next season

Happy for Colon as he continues his roller coaster season. Though I can't get too wrapped up in 200 since the Mets are just a footnote in his career. Couldn't really get into Gary Sheffield's 500th HR either (remember he was a Met!?)

Eveland is mostly a pretty bad pitcher. His career numbers speak to this. Even up 5-1 I'm not comfortable with him in there. Maybe if it was 7-1 I'd be more at ease. But you really don't want Dana Eveland ever coming into a game

Agree with nmig's den Dekker post...what exactly do the Mets have to lose in giving him a shot?  Chris Young stinks.  There was no reason for him to keep getting ABs with the Mets.  den Dekker's probably just another AAAA player (there seem to be a lot of them in Vegas...and he turns 27 tomorrow, so he's no kid), but there's absolutely no harm in playing him for the next couple of months, and his showing some improvement in the minors warrants him playing with the big boys.

And yeah '7', it seemed like Young would hit a HR at just the right time to keep himself relevant for a while.  Same thing with Ike Davis in 2013, before he finally got sent down.  One of many reasons the Mets can be maddening...seems like they're often the last to know what is painfully obvious to everyone else.

Colon...meh.  Can't get that excited about the achievements of a former PED guy.  Kind of ironic that he could finish the season with 13-14 wins, over 200 IP, and some peripherals that are quite good (like his BB rate and WHIP), but doesn't seem to be drawing any interest at all.  He's gotten it done in four out of his last 6 starts (7+ IP and 3 ER or less in those four games), so maybe if he has a couple more good ones...like nmig said, wonder if the Mets just put him out there to get claimed, then say "Fine, all yours" if a team does.

'7', re: Eveland...he's been pretty good, considering his prior track record.  He didn't get it done yesterday, but it's not like he's been constantly failing when he's been called on.  If he pitches well through the end of the season, he'll probably be back...amazing how many lives lefties have.

And somehow I didn't notice this, but John Lannan...yes, THAT John Lannan...is currently in the Vegas rotation, and after one good game, has predictably been awful.  I'm sorry, but what the hell is he doing there?  I get that several AAA rotations have chum filling them out...but JOHN LANNAN?!  Really?!

Nice win. We really can't beat the Phillies enough. I just love whipping those punks in Citizens Bank Park.

Lucas Duda bitches is really becoming a thing...heh.

Mets record last 27 games at Citizens Bank? 21-6!

Lucas Duda, bitches.

Familia getting a chance to close with Mejia needing to rest his calf.

Really hope Duda isn't a one-year wonder, because he'll be a pretty good first baseman for a while if he's not (and not stupidly expensive).  Never thought I could say that, but he's become quite a bit more than a guy who can hit 20 HRs by accident and draw some walks.

I'm all for Familia getting a shot to close...Mejia has a good save conversion rate, but he gives up a lot of hits (even moreso lately).

Good job on Gee's part to turn in a couple of solid starts after a few tough ones.  The sabes might not support Gee, but he's gotten mostly solid results for about a year.  That's what it ultimately comes down to.  Either Niese or Gee has to go though...even more so if Colon is still here.

AdamRubinESPN: Assistant GM John Ricco says Jacob deGrom to NY. Shoulder soreness. Scratched from start.

Of course.

well hopefully it's nothing. But pitchers are so fragile these days. As soon as we start getting into a guy like Harvey, deGrom...boom the baseball gods slap us upside the head. Even if this is something minor they may shut him down for 2014 anyway.

To quote nmig:  "Pitchers."

Hopefully it's nothing serious.

If anything, now a spot is open for Syndergaard, Montero, or Verrett.  No offense to Carlos Torres, but I don't want to see him get that start...keep him in the 'pen.  I think Montero is scheduled to pitch for Vegas today, so if he's scratched we know he's coming back up.

Even Wright has a couple of hits and an RBI today.

Wow...breaks are really going Zack's way right now.  d'Arnaud really has to work on blocking pitches.

And Zack's luck finally runs out.

The game's never over in this ballpark.

Sadly Flores might not get much of a change to get his bat going...he simply can't field at SS.

Guess it's too much to ask David Wright to ever hit a home run when it could really help his team.

Terry's still a meh manager at best, but Zack still shoots himself in the foot on occasion with the laboring/walks (and some ABs still drag on too long when he's pitching), and a solid shortstop doesn't lead to an "infield hit" happening.  Yeah, TC could've gone to the lefty there and it would've made plenty of sense, but sometimes as we know managers sometimes go with their guts.

Mejia gives up 2 hits for the sixth straight game and for the 7th time in his last eight appearances.  He's just not much of a hit suppressor.  Not a great quality for a "closer" to have.

And looks like his gut of going with Mejia here was terribly wrong as well. Mejia is probably still hurt.

I'm starting to think that he's just not that great.  I want Familia to get a look.
