Because this one decision will greatly affect his life for the next 10+ years? Maybe that's why?

It's not like he's only had a few days to think about it. He's known he was going to be a free agent for a long time. The cities are no different then they were...

RIGHT.

Like I said, the dude has the right to ask for whatever he wants but it's still a character decision and so would be choosing a team like the Pens.

I suppose you really need that extra Corvette sometimes.

Exactly, I mean how much money is enough?

I agree 100%. Too many fans are trying to defend this "decision making" process because of the money being offered.

Here is some reality:

If you make "only" 7 million a year instead of 10 million a year you can still have the following:

1. Kids in the best schools.

2. A nice house in a nice neighborhood.

3. Another house (or two) anywhere else in the world.

4. Your wife will never have to work a day in her life.

I'm not a socialist and I don't care who makes how much money but I don't really care about people who gripe over making "only" seven million a year instead of X million a year.

If you want to play here and you will make seven million then stay; if you really need an extra million to play a game then take a walk.

All of that's right, but the difficult part of the decision is WHERE he's going to have all of those things you listed, not whether or not he gets to have them. Regardless of all the perks, you're still going to be living somewhere and, all else being equal, you may as well like that place and all the things it has to offer. Nobody's saying he's chosing between a rock and a hard place. He's an extremely fortunate man regardless of whatever he chooses, but choosing between a few really great things doesn't make it an easy decision and it's one that will have a large impact on the rest of his life.

It's easier to talk about the difference between 7m and 10m when the money is theoretical and your name isn't on the contract. 3 million dollars is still 3 million dollars.

That's up to you.

Like I said its his/your decision.

Okay, so he can take a walk.

I don't think it's a money decisions for Zach. It's definitely a hockey decision so none of this other stuff has much bearing. When your talking about millions of dollars in salary he's already going to have the best of everything. He's not eating and sending his kids to the same places you do either way....

If Minnesota is still involved in the talks it sure as hell isn't a hockey decision.

If the Devils were offering an average of 3m less per year, they wouldn't be in discussion still.

My best guess is that the Devils cannot offer him the huge signing bonus that other teams are able to (the lockout insurance). Similar terms and length, just no huge signing bonus.

Well if its a hockey decision then the Devils should be on the top of the list.

Look at the recent 20 years for the team and its clear that it is a winner.

I've been reading your posts on this topic and its clear that you are a guy who would make money the number aspect of a contract offer.

That's your right of course.

I would be more along the lines of leaning toward the money. If you asked me this question during my playing days I would absolutely, unequivocally tell you I would wear no other jersey than that of my high school, but now that I am 5 years out of college and I see just how brutal the business world is...

TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN...FAST

Yep. And even a team like Chicago isn't consistent historically.

If you want the best chance at winning long term then NJ would be a great place to play. And if you are already the captain of NJ I don't see why it would be so hard to come back.

It all comes down to money.

I understand but I see it the other way. I don't care about people who are griping about "losing out" because they get paid 7 million a year and not 10 million a year. Considering that the people who come watch the games, by and large, are scrapping to get by and grab a beer at the game.

GAME...

And two of the guys who were a big part of that (Brodeur and Lamoriello) are almost done. And the ownership issue is iffy. Zach is likely looking at where the Devils are going, not where they've been. And let's face it, the future is filled with question marks.

Not necessarily, he may feel that some of the other teams have a better chance at winning. Or giving him the opportunity to play the game the way he wants to play it.

FWIW- If it was up to me I'd be in Minnesota already because family and home is what I value above all else.

And in what magical place is this not the case?

Aren't a lot of teams at least in the bidding for Parise like that though?

Pittsburgh is still iffy with Crosby and to me Malkin is not the type of player to lead a team to the cup. Detroit seems to be slowly sinking as well.

Not neccesarily, that's part of the problem. Pittsburgh is his best chance to win, Minnesota offers family and friends (we do too, but it's still different).

The only sure thing in the NHL is that there is no sure thing, but the Devils' situation isn't necessarily the most appealing right now. There could be some major changes coming in the next few years, from ownership to the front office to the soon-to-be retirement of a mainstay...Zach may not want to be involved with that.

Its too bad that the franchise is owned by a former VP of Lehman Bros.

Then he should have turned down the Captain's C.

If it means anything anymore...

Do they really though? Crosby is one concussion away from possibly being done. Fleury couldn't stop a beach ball during the playoffs. If they decide to go to Vokoun instead he's never gotten past the 1st round and has only played in 11 playoff games.

One thing these playoffs showed us this year is that again nothing is guaranteed.

Like I said elsewhere, if Parise has sense, he'll sign with the Penguins. Who in their right mind would pass that chance up?

I guess he could upgrade his diving skills...

Yeah, and as long as the playoff opponent pushes them around a little all hell break lose and they collapse. What does Parise do in that situation?

if he goes to Pitt, he will be 3rd fiddle to Crosby and Malkin, as far as the Penguins are concerned they are untouchable. Look at the contract Crosby just got. Zach will never have a chance to stand out there, he'll just become another one of their guys, maybe a first liner, but more likely 2nd line - just a weapon they took away from the competition for an advantage.
