Uncle Lou needs a talk with Barch and his twitter account after the lockout ends (hopefully).

I sit in front of a fire, 8 OV deep and starting a bottle of Porte that will assist in the translations of my emotions into words! No different than a truck driver, farmer or line worker I have a shot and a beer. Not to deal with the days ahead but to ease the nerves from what my body has endured the days before.

I wonder if the owners of Boston, New York, Washington etc, etc, have endured any of the injuries that I or any other player in the NHL have endured. Still they probably sit there smoking the same brand of cigar, sipping the same cognac, and going on vacation to one of the five houses they own…While we sit here knowing they want to take 20% of our paychecks. One half to 3/4 of my peers will have to work for the next 50 years of their lives. Congratulations to the lucky select few that I have played with who have made salaries that they can choose to do whatever they want when they are done. But I have played most who do not!

Man, it must be really rough for him knowing he'll have to work all his life. Why did he become a professional athlete? He should've just gone the same route as all of the fans, then he could've retired at 25 like the rest of us.

He'll have to work all his life, but he'll have to retire at 35 from this career. I imagine it's quite hard to transition to anything else after this. This is a rich person's problem, of course, but most people don't take the kind of physical abuse that Barch and his ilk endure. And most of them who do don't make it to the NHL, either - they're in an even worse spot.

And this is yet another reason I don't support the players. The self entitlement is disgusting.

Barch didn't express himself well, but I think the point he wanted to make is that the way the owners are conducting things, the money they promised the players via signed contract is no longer promised. That kind of entitlement is disgusting - you're paying the same ticket price regardless of the players' salaries, and all the owners did was wring the money out of public coffers to pay for the arena which they have control over - this control gives them the ability to lock out the players.

I don't think it's entitlement. The players signed contracts that the owners approved and now they are being told that they have to take a 20% paycut because the owners can't control their own spending. And this is after the owners got nearly everything they wanted 8 years ago. I can see the players side a lot more than I can see the owners.

Both sides suck. Really a roll back? I mean come on that's dumb considering it will probably put some teams under the cap floor so they'll have to spend anyway. They aren't getting a roll back. And Fehr seems content to have the lockout. Wanting to threaten the Winter Classic for God knows what reason.

It sounds self entitled, but remember, these guys spend the years most of us get an education preparing for a career that ends at around 35. If we lost the ability to do our jobs at 35, it would be tough for us to survive for the rest of our lives. While players are lucky enough to make huge salaries, which gives them flexibility for a couple years, when they start to drain the savings and most of their job training is no longer useful, that's brutal. Barch didn't express himself well, but the players in every sport do suffer a unique disadvantage, even with their exorbitant salaries. I have less sympathy for American athletes, since they at least had to attend traditional schools and in theory (emphasis on theory) had the opportunity to get an education, but Canadian hockey players who came up through the youth system have it rough.

By the way, during the last lockout, I had something that resembled sympathy for the owners (though I was disgusted at both sides), since the game was in a ton of trouble financially, and they were bearing the burden. This time through, the game is in pretty good shape and, until the fvcking lockout, seemed to be getting better. IMO the owners are just getting greedy now, and the main victims (more than the players) are the fans.

Please this is garbage. If I played for 15 years making 500k, I think I could budget and set myself up for life. That is $7.5M over a course of a career. If someone made $75,000 working 40 years (20-60) they would have made $3M. People get by making less than that as well. Cry me a river.

Even a 10 year career still nets you $5M, or a five year career nets you $2.5M. So for the rest of his life, he needs to make 500k to break even with a non professional athlete.

Suppose the owner of the factory or car dealership wanted his workers to take a 20% paycut too. It sounds a lot worse than professional athletes taking a big cut like that, but someone making $25,000 a year could have the same view of them as you do towards the players. To go even further, someone barely scraping by in a poor country could say the same thing about the guy making 25k. People always compare other people's worlds to their own worlds, but put yourself in the shoes of the players, they were promised this money when they signed the contracts, and now the owners want to go back and chop 20% off and you expect them to just sit there and say okay that's fine, we make enough anyway?

And all this talk about neither side caring about the fans blah blah is just whining. I'm as upset as anyone that there is another lockout but the players and owners have a major financial stake in this that extends well beyond this season. What is at stake for us? Maybe one year of entertainment? No matter what happens, we lose nothing of value.

Bottom line is that I do not want to hear anyone making over $500,000 complain about work to the fans. Its disgusting.

And any amount you come up with, take into account taxes and a lot of other fees and expenses one has. The professional NHL career is a short one for your average player. That's why guys who take hometown discounts or take less to play for a contender don't get enough credit.

Barch has made $2,825,000 playing in the NHL since the 2008-09 season. He's schedule to make $750,000 this season and next season as well. So between that and his few years in the NHL before that and decent money playing in the AHL even before he made the NHL he is more then set for life if he so chose to be,
