All Aboard The Severson Train

It's only been 3 games, and it's going to be a long road ahead, but Damon Severson has the potential to be a star in this league.  And without injury he's at least going to be a pretty good player.

There's his skating - he skates very well, straight ahead, backwards, and his lateral movement is terrific.

There's his passing - he has made several very impressive passes already.  He is not afraid of the high risk play.

In the offensive zone - while he's favored the shot a lot more than the pass, his ability to move the puck on the power play has been quite excellent - he's not wondering about where the puck should go when he gets it, he already has an idea of where it's got to go.

In the defensive zone without the puck - we haven't seen a ton of this, but I've liked his 1 on 1 defense along the boards and on puck carriers.  Obviously it's really early to start saying much about this - we saw how Gelinas progressed from 'he's decent' to 'oh god he's awful' over the course of a season.

We haven't seen much of him pinching in or how he defends 2 on 1s or a lot of critical aspects to playing defense yet, but in the aspects we have seen, he's earning the trust of the coaching staff.  So yeah, hop on board - the Devils haven't had a guy show this much promise at this age in a long time.

He's certainly willing to make risky plays to get the puck out of his zone but they all worked so far. It's likely gonna bite him in the ass at some point but he's certainly doing a lot more good than bad. I really like this kid's confidence.

I can't wait for us to play Nashville just to see him play against his idol Shea Weber. Those are the moments that are good to see. I still feel bad for Larsson not being able to play against Lidstrom then he retired. But yeah, Weber was Damon's idol growing up, played on the same junior team and Damon's numbers are actually slightly better than weber's numbers at the same age. Of course it's only a good indication and not something you can make assumptions or put that much into it but it's certainly good.

smart forecheckers give you the risky pass, so take it. not only the pass, he splits the pressure and skates right in front of cory. compared to how many times zid fails at these as a vet, its shows how advanced his play is... hes everything we were supposed to have in larsson

now merrill needs to step his game up a notch

That's exactly what I was thinking last night watching Severson play.  Speaks volumes about Larsson.

This kid has been extremely impressive thus far.  He seems very calm both with and without the puck, and instinctively knows the correct play to make time and again.  We'll see if this is something he can sustain over the course of a long NHL season, but the Devils look like they got a steal with Severson.

Our D prospects are off the charts with Merrill, Severson, Gelinas, and Larsson (who I still think will be a good player when all is said and done), not to mention Santini and Jacobs.  If only we had the young forwards to go along with them.

Building from the net out has served the Devils and other teams well.  And while I think Santini is a pretty safe bet to be an effective NHLer, for all we know, Jacobs could turn into another Brandon Burlon.   And there is a decent forward core that should be effective for the next four to five years in Zajac, Henrique, Cammaelleri, which should be supplemented with Matteau and Boucher in the near term.  I think Elias has another two to three more effective years left in him, and Havlat isn't that ancient.  Based on how things look now, I'm kind of going on the assumption that the only non-AHL forward in the system that has a pretty good shot at being an effective NHLer is Quennesville.

Lou and Conte seem to realize that young forwards are desparately needed at this point, and have a strategy of going for forwards unless the defenseman is too good to pass up.  You pick enough forwards, eventually a few of them should be good, and you might end up with a huge steal.

I thought he has looked great so far, but its early so I am holding initial judgement till maybe November.

And on those 2 penalties he had, the first was him trying to swipe at the puck and the opposing player ran into his stick. The ref coulda called that either way.

The second one he just got edged out so it was more of a good play on the forward going against him rather than a mistake that Severson made himself.

Well...it must have been the case and they must have been really really high on Santini cause Im still shocked that we passed on Dauphin which from what i saw was a stereotypical Devils kind of forward. I know Santini looks good but we have plenty of dmen and need forwards desperately. Anyway... we got 2 players out of it so let's see how Santini and Kujawinski turns out

he's  been very impressive so far. larsson started off well also, but not in every area and his weaknesses (slow time to shoot, not good on PP) were pretty apparent quickly.

i don't want to derail this thread into a larsson conversation but we were very high on larsson his first year also and he showed pro aspects of his game right away (not just his first pass). as far as larsson's confidence - that will happen when you're yo-yo'd in and out of the lineup and get wally pipp'd to the bench. the lack of communication on why he was being scratched didn't help either.

This isn't a discussion about Larsson, it's about Severson.  If you want to start a discussion about Larsson, start a thread about him.

The thing about junior is that you just don't know - Severson has great numbers in junior, but so did Jonathon Blum, and now he's an 8th defenseman kind of guy.  And it's not like Kelowna misses Severson either - they're 8-0 to start the season.

Kelowna seems like an orginazation like Portland or London. No matter who they lose, they remain a top team due to drafting and player development. Judging by Kelowna's history of defensemen, they knew exactly how to develop Severson

It's really great to see the young kids we have. Its alright theyre all defenseman because we are the Devils. Defense first. And with Schneider in goal, we have a great foundation in the back.

Something else we need to keep in mind, GREENE IS PLAYING LIGHTS OUT!!!! Andy is as good as it gets with the puck behind his own net.  sweet pairing, who woulda thunk it?

yeah yesterday while we were pressured on the PK  and were struggling getting the puck out, he got the puck behind the net and faked shooting it along the boards on his left and turned the other way leaving the tampa player going the other way, had lots of room lift his head and clear the puck with no pressure. You see that kind of play all the time but with the pressure they had and all, Great play

I still don't know how he did it, escaped all kinds of pressure in a fraction of a second fake (or whatever) he did. I think our system would usually have him faking the carry but no-look passing it back along the boards, but when Tampa looked like they wised up to it, he had different plans.

honestly I disagree, I think Greene has been pretty pedestrian so far (by his standards). Yeah he made the nice play behind the net but he took such a dumb penalty early last night that started tampa's onslaught, luckily Cory bailed him out.

He looks good so far, but in my experience the NHL is littered with guys who come up and perform well for 1-2 weeks, so I hope for the best that Severson is not going to be another one of those stories.

Internally we got prospects like Larsson & Josefson who honestly got overated by the posters here like crazy when they started while some we're pointing out that there was clearly issues and lack of skills in their play.(got called out about it by the way... who's looking like fools now?) The typical blinders thing from a fanbase.

But I really don't think anyone is seeing Severson with blinders now. He showed that he has all the tools already. Obviously it's not a slamdunk but just a matter of keeping up.

edit: that being said and seeing how Hedman is playing now i still think there's a slight chance that Larsson really become a strong dman but there's certainly and fairly reasons to be concerned
