Voros19
Changes are coming if the Devils keep playing like this. I dont see Lou having tolerance for this kind of play much longer. 40 games in, and we still suck, I can see Lou dumping a lot of salary and calling up the boys from Albany. Uh.... dumping it WHERE?!?! It was hard to trade useless junk before. It's even harder now. I think Parise, Martin and Gionta are the only trading chips that people would want at the moment. And Elias. I'm not sure that anyone would take Brodeur currently.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm not just talking about getting under the Cap, I'm talking about wholesale changes. Are you telling me Gomez has no trade value? Mogilny? Langenbrunner? Come March, we could definitely get something from a team looking to make a Cup run. No one would take Brodeur? Are you kidding? Arguably the best goalie of all time, and no one would take him?
RowdyFan42
I'm not sure that anyone would take Brodeur currently.... Oh, I don't know about that, Don. I'd say at least half the teams in the league would jump at the chance to grab Marty. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=- One place you could dump salary is Albany, especially if the plan is calling up Rats to fill the vacated slots. You'd screw up the chemistry in Albany something powerful and you'd have the highest-paid minor league team since the demise of the IHL (not to mention some pissed-off former Devils), but it could be done. Guest
Clemmy let in a goal on two shots courtesy of pathetic McGillis. All the goals are a product of lousy D. D which will be tough to dump, unless another piss poor team is desperate enough to take a body, any body. All the guys you named Don are not going anywhere, if the Devils hope to get anywhere this season. Lou made two huge mistakes on D, probably due in part to the two Scotts taking their sweet time making a decision to stay or go. The M&M team of Muck and Mire (aka McGillis and Malakhov) have to go, somehow. Lou will find a way.l <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The McGillis and Brown pairing was not a good one by any stretch. The forwards have done a really poor job of getting back and helping out down low also. Used to be you could count on a solid 5 man defensive effort in the Devils defensive zone. The checking line was victimized a few times tonight as was Parise's line. Just don't see that same uniform commitment towards limiting scoring opps to the perimeter like before. LizDevil30
I don't know why we keep Brown. Oliwa played. Well I heard his name, but I don't recall him doing anything. Right now they are not playing like a team. Just a bunch of bodies lost on the ice.

MadDog2020
Well, I just got home from this pathetic debacle. Wow. Just- . We started off okay- good first 3 or 4 shifts- then the dumb penalties come, Carolina scores and the team quits. I don't even know where to begin- AGAIN- lousy defensive zone coverage down low- actually just lousy defense PERIOD. Langenbrunner- where the hell are you? Gomez- where the hell are you? Madden- where the hell are you? McGillis- McGarbage. Malakhov- I was at a loss at how Lou overpaid for this guy when the signing happened- but I didn't think he'd be THIS bad. Mogilny- where the hell are YOU? Again, no one driving the net- no one making life miserable for the opposing goaltender by getting in front both 5-on-5 and on the PP. A continuous march to the box. Awful. Just awful.
MadDog2020
Can there be a defenseman any worse than McGillis? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Malakhov is giving him a serious run for his money.

Elias26
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Rod Brind'Amour scored two goals and Matt Cullen had a goal and two assists, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. The Hurricanes, winners of their second straight, chased Devils goalie Martin Brodeur after just two periods. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner gave up five goals on 19 shots and was replaced by Scott Clemmensen to start the third. Cam Ward, a rookie who earned his first NHL victory on Oct. 7 against Pittsburgh, stopped 27 shots for Carolina, which beat Washington 7-2 at home on Wednesday. Carolina jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power-play goal by Radim Vrbata at 5:32. The Hurricanes pressured Brodeur frequently, forcing him to stop consecutive 2-on-1s in less than a minute during one stretch. Carolina increased the lead to 3-0 with a two-goal flurry in a span of 17 seconds late in the period. After Devils defenseman Dan McGillis lost control of the puck near his own blue line, Erik Cole took the puck and skated in alone on Brodeur to make it 2-0 at 16:39. Cullen then scored on assists by Oleg Tverdosky and Josef Vasicek. Jay Pandolfo scored New Jersey's lone goal at 6:18 of the second period, crossing in front of the crease and backhanding a rebound of a shot by Richard Matvichuk past Ward that made the score 3-1. Brind'Amour scored Carolina's second power-play goal of the night in the second period when he slid what appeared to be a pass from a sharp angle to Brodeur's left and the puck deflected in off the goalie's skate. Brind'Amour added another goal in the third period against Clemmensen, gathering up a rebound of a shot by defenseman Mike Commodore and converting from in the crease. Rock
Oh well they lost. What are you going to do? I thought the Russian and American lines had some good moments. Langenbrunner didn't take any stupid penalties. (White's was dumb however. Too much shoulder on a guy who never touched the puck.) They cut down on the number of penalties just took them at the wrong time. The overpassing of the puck and getting shots blocked are killing them and me at the moment. How about driving to the net? How bad is White hurt? The post game on the radio said it's a pulled muscle, anyone hear anything else?

Satans Hockey
Why the hell are some people saying we should trade Marty? That would only makes us worse. We lost its not the end of the world. Doesn't everyone remember how the Rangers always seem to be good up to January 1st and than they suck for the rest of the season. Ive had it more with listening to people than I have with this team. If this keeps up for another 15 games than yeah we got something seriously to worry about. It's been 5 games we are 2-3 if we are 2-18 in a month than lets all jump off that bridge together. Vinnie
I seriously laughed out loud when I saw it was 3-0. This team is officially a joke.I'll probably get hell for this but I think trading Brodeur should be considered. Not because of his performance, but it's clear that this team just plain old sucks. Trade Gomez too because I doubt he'll stick around when he becomes a free agent. This team doesn't have the offensive talent to prosper in a league that's catering to goals goals goals. The fact that Mogilny/Malakhov make over 7M combined makes me physically ill. Time for a goddamn rebuild. Call me a non-fan if you want, but I truly think starting over is what this team needs. Or at least a new fvcking coach. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Any time they'd like to start is fine by me. Also, creating some traffic in front would be nice- how about- SCREENING? Have they heard of it? As a side note while most of the penalties were warranted tonight, the boarding call on Marshall was horse-sh!t. I guess finishing your check is also prohibited in Gary Bettman hockey. Devils731
The only forward line that consistently created offensive pressure was whatever line Kozlov was on. You think the Devils would have 1 other forward that could create any type of sustained pressure, but they don't. Gionta has played well but he needs someone carrying the puck for him to finish. Parise has dissapeared, not that he is playing badly, just doing nothing positive or negative. Gomez actually is a detriment out there at the moment. Pando's line actually had their legs moving at times which resulted in their better play. Bottom line for me is every team I see play always have at least 2-3 guys moving their legs while the Devils continue to focus on playing laid back positional hockey and I think, even after only 5 games, that passive zonal play will not work, I won't rewrite my whole rant about this from last game but its another game with no noticeable change in a philosophy which seems impossible to win with. NJDevs4978
I am glad I didn't buy season tickets for the DevilsIt would be a tough drive home after these games. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actually it's easier to laugh about it in a way if you do go to the games. Personally I would have been a lot more pissy about tonight if I was at home instead of at the arena laughing my ass off at the drunkenness of some of the sections. It was so bad, there was even a J-E-T-S chant in the third period As for the game itself, I don't know whether to be encouraged or discouraged by the fact that this was actually the best effort the team's given this year. I saw more bodychecks tonight than the rest of the season COMBINED, and there were fewer shots allowed. But offensively this team is just lost. It seems like Herm Edwards is coaching the offense, that's how bad it is Earth to Larry: This trapezoid power play isn't working with five guys on the perimeter. GET SOME GUYS IN FRONT! Especially considering the team can't pass, I'd be shocked if they were over 30% passing for the night Marty, oy vey It looks like he's sitting around waiting for Stevens, Niedermayer and even Martin to come back. I don't know how much of tonight was his fault per se, but that last goal was maybe the most pathetic I've seen him give up, it brought back memories of Belfour being stoned on NyQuill when Elias and Sykora juked him out of his shoes. I've already had enough of McGillis. Let's just Esa Tikannen this guy and/or send him to Albany and bring up Hale, hell dump Brown and sign Albelin too while we're at it. He STINKS. How he ever got 30+ points in a season I don't know because he looks like Lyle Odelein offensively. Come to think of it he looks like Odelein defensively too. I didn't even realize White was hurt too, I was PISSED OFF at Matvichuk getting hurt though, I'm surprised nobody commented on it in this thread. He looked really bad, and a shame too cause the guy was playing his ass off, throwing bodychecks in the third period of a 6-1 game. In that same vein, listening to the postgame on the ride home though, they were making a big deal about the effort (or lack thereof) in the third period, come on, with how clueless this offense has been since the Pittsburgh game, there was NO FREAKING WAY they were coming back in the third period anyway. The horse was out of the barn at that point and whenever Marty gets pulled (and deservedly so tonight) the rest of the team knows it's see you later for the night. Tonight wasn't about effort, it was just a plain inept performance. Edited October 16, 2005 by Hasan4978
Devils731
A question for the people who watched on TV: Parise was called for delay of game for shooting the puck out of play setting up the 5-3. I could of sworn he shot it over the bench area and not over the high boards, if this was the case shouldn't there be no penalty? I thought the penalty only came when the puck went out of play over the regular boards and not just in the bench area.
