Brodeur retires, joins STL front office

It took this long for them to finally start talking about his career and talents instead of drama. Nice work, ya schmucks.

I was watching a little before the PC began and that worthless schmuck Healey was droning on and on about the trap and how the system helped Marty's numbers. It came off as pretty petty and bitter.

Yeah it did. Him basically saying Marty was good because of the trap and the Devils playing an 0-5 fore check

Yeah, pretty much tried to discredit Marty. It was obvious to anyone watching. Guess he still has some of that Ranger douchery from sitting on the bench there in '94 still in his blood.

I was wondering if Healy would bring up 94 just to take a stab at Marty.  Healy has nothing else than to make fun of Marty while his team won the cup....while Healy was sitting on the bench watching the whole time.

This is such an anticlimax to the career of the sports greatest ever goaltender.

He has got to be sat there thinking "ok, this wasn't the best way to say my goodbye".

The sooner he can get back to New Jersey and the organisation can give him the send off he deserves the better.

My favorite all time player. There will never be another one. I couldn't care less that he played for the blues because I didn't watch the games so in my world it never happened.

I feel the same way about today's presser.

I do find it interesting that he said he wasn't neccesarily coming back next year. So either Lou fibbed to the media/fans, got the wrong message from Marty, or Marty just didn't want to come off as a carpetbagger in front of St. Louis considering he's working there the rest of the season.

I'm excited for that night, but something tells me he won't be part of the Devils organization for a while. Hopefully that doesn't piss people off. He seems to enjoy the Blues, it's a good management staff, and he's going to learn a lot. They've given him a really nice title as well. It wouldn't shock me to be with the Blues for a few years.

By the way, if he ever joins the Devils management staff, this would be beneficial for him and the organization.

A couple observations:

1) I don't think there will be a one-day contract so he can retire as a Devil. He just retired as a member of the Blues. I don't think after there is a press conference announcing his retirement there would be another contract and another retirement.

2) Everyone is saying he should have signed a one-day and retired as a Devil, but I don't believe that option was possible since he was under contract to the Blues (unless they released him as a part of the arrangement).

3) Even if it was possible, I haven't heard anything about Lou offering that to him, nor does Lou strike me as the kind of guy who would do that.

Is it weird for him to retire as something other than a Devil? Yes. But if the Devils wanted to keep him they had the opportunity. Not saying they should have, but they decided not to. I've said it a dozen times, he wanted to play, and if I wanted to play, I'd have done the same thing he did. Nobody is going to force my retirement if someone else is interested.

Now, the interest is gone, and the retirement is here. He still did what he did in red and black and they should put #30 up there immediately, I wouldn't even wait until next season. Give the fans something to cheer about during this lost year.

This.  Not to mention that he would bring experience outside of Lou's world.  And of course, we still have no idea whether he's even cut out for being an executive.

Nick Cotsonika @cotsonika:

Brodeur to Elliotte Friedman: "My hockey career, it's all about New Jersey. ... It's kind of weird for people, but I'm happy with it."

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC:

"Anyone who thinks me and Lou are not on the same page...they are wrong." Might be the only guy who calls him "Lou."

100%. He may never come out and say it publically, but Marty knows deep down that this 7 game \ 6 start stunt was a gaffe.

April 13th of last year.. with a victory against the Bruins, and a soldout Rock chanting his name as he waived goodbye. That should've been his last game. That's how it should've ended.

He wanted to keep playing. That's what he cared about. Is he upset that it didn't work or he didn't play better? Probably, but there is no way this was a gaffe for him. He got a chance to take the net and run with it for a top 5 team in the league. That's all he could ask for.

From everything he has said 100 times, last year was an awful season for him, and not one he wanted to end on.

If it was, I don't think he is retiring as a Blue and joining their management staff.

Let's just wish him well. Whatever his future is depends on his acceptance and commitment to management job. For now traveling with the St Louis team and working with and for Armstrong is a learning experience. If he likes it he will be with the Devils sooner rather than later as will Oates and Stevens.

what room will there be though with the devils if the gm spot goes to oates? this new rumoryesterday sounded like oates could be groomed as lous successor

I don't know but there could be Executive VP, or Senior VP. IMO Oates has more experience than Marty or Stevens. Oates Washington experience was not so much his fault.

I do feel like the timing was rather interesting. Almost like the Assistant\Co GM spot may've been offered to Brodeur.

We didn't hear one thing about Adam Oates being the next GM all of last week\month. All we knew (from Lou's own words) was that the Devils offered Marty essentially the same front office role the Blues offered him. "He [brodeur] could've come here this season" --Lou

..then 24 hours after it's revealed that Brodeur is accepting the Blues front office job, the rumors of Oates being the next GM began to trickle.

Marty may eventually become a great hockey executive...who knows. But overall (and this goes for a lot of guys) I'm not a fan of hotshotting guys straight from the ice to high levels of the front office.

I agree. Pay your dues and learn, just like any other career. I think what he is doing with St. Louis is good for him because he can get a feel for whether he would like to be an executive. It's a very time-consuming job, and it's not for everyone.
