What does Mike Francesa know about local hockey?

what is the obsession with Francesca on this site?  He doesn't know hockey, he admits it, he knows sports and can relate it to hockey when the playoffs come around.

It's sad actually that he is more honest about the rangers come playoff times then most of the guests he has(micheleti) cause he says when he doesn't think they are playing great and got lucky to go a couple rounds.  That was my feeling on his analysis 2 years ago.  He doesn't like regular season hockey and doesn't pay attention.   I rather have it the way he is instead of most of their hosts that think the rangers will win the cup every year and no other team is worthy of their time.

It's like howard stern fans that listen to every second while claiming to hate him.  If you are looking for hockey talk why even bother with the fan?

He admits he doesn't follow the sport too closely.  So long as he's honest about it, I don't have a problem with it.

He does a pretty good job with his hockey interviews around playoff time.

Oh I'm sorry that I think a local host should know more about hockey then horse racing. That a little bit of professionalism and giving a damn about your job. It just drives me insane that this jabroni is the top of the local sports landscape because he's an ass and just awful at his job.

Maybe the sports landscape cares more about horse racing then hockey.  Otherwise he wouldn't be number 1.

Then don't listen.  There's Kay and LaGreca, the latter of whom definitely knows his hockey.  They can be fairly tiresome themselves unfortunately.  I still don't think I've heard enough commentary on whether baseball players that did steroids belong in the Hall of Fame.

I don't but that means there's a void between 1 and 3 which sports radio in this town is like ear bleedingly bad between Francesser and Screaming A Smith

Did anyone hear Mike on Friday when the caller asked him to name the head coach of the Rangers?  Mike totally avoided the question and kept talking over him asking him "whats the point?"  When the caller was just started to explain (about 3-5 words in), Mike kept cutting him off to repeat "Whats the point?!"  He then hung up the phone on the guy and said it's still to early to talk about hockey and will get to it when the season is a little older.  Not only that he said he only wants to talk about Football because its "Football Friday."

He then followed that by taking a call and answering a question about the Knicks with no problem.

Steve Somers and Joe Beningo do nothing but trash the Devils every opportunity they get. It's sickening. The fact the Devils radio broadcasts are on the same station as these clowns makes my blood boil. WFAN has too big of egos.

hmm I've never heard Beningo bad mouth the devils... In fact I remember him respecting the titles we've won in comparison to the rags.

Bottom line with talk radio is good hosts ratings-wise are the ones that are provocative. Mike carton and sommers are definitely that. I actually think overall most of wfan guys arent that bad. Living in some other cities for a while I've come across some absolutely terrible sports radio hosts and my appreciation for most of the wfan guys has increased.

Everything with Somers is schtick.  You either get him or you don't, but he doesn't take himself or what he does seriously.  He's not really a guy who should get under your skin, unless you hate his voice (I can see why some people wouldn't like it) or his act.

I agree with dmann...Beningo may not like the Devils, but he respects what they've done.  And to Somers' and Beningo's credit, they WILL give you a reasonable opportunity to banter with them.  They treat their callers as equals.  Francesa treats everyone like they're beneath him right off the bat, which is ironic, considering that he is by far and away the least articulate and insightful host on the station.  He literally often says (more stammers) nothing that isn't obvious.

i actually like francesa and his honesty about not following hockey. i know he has a lot of adimiration for lou (especially for hiring rick pitino when he was in providence) and he even stated that larry robinson was one heck of a hockey player. If he doesn't cover hockey, its not the end of the world. I mean its his show and he can do whatever he wants. I wouldnt be surprised that the radio station does market research on listening to what the fans want. If there was that great of a demand, I would assume that the station would push him or encourage him to do it. In regards to the remark about horse racing, horse racing is extremely popular. I live near an off track horse betting place in Fords, NJ and that place is consistently packed at all hours of the day even holidays. When they had the derby, the people were parking a few blocks away from the building.

i do agree about how he treats his listeners but he still gets the ratings. he has admitted to doing it just to get listeners all riled up especially regarding the Jets at times. The late George Carlin once had a comedy skit about people who didnt like what they heard in the radio....

"A Reverend Donald Wildman in Mississippi heard something on the radio that he didn't like. Well, Reverend, did anyone ever tell you there are two KNOBS on the radio? Two. Knobs. On the radio. Of course, I'm sure the reverend isn't that comfortable with anything that has two knobs on it. But hey, reverend, there are two knobs on the radio! One of them turns the radio OFF, and the other one CHANGES THE STATION! Imagine that, reverend, you can actually change the station! It's called freedom of choice, and it's one of the principles this country was founded upon. Look it up in the library, reverend, if you have any of them left when you've finished burning all the books."

Somers is my favorite radio host ever, you have to know it's a joke like CR1976 said. Sure I didn't wanna listen to him after one of the games the devils lost to the rangers in the '12 conf finals, but he's hilarious. Nassau Masoleum, Icelanders etc

In fairness, I don't think most of the people criticizing him listen to him much anymore, for the reasons he draws the criticism in the first place.  I listen to him to hear Terry Collins (Met manager), because I want to hear the state of the Mets.  That's about it.

Is this mike francesa? Did mike francesa make an njdevs.com account? Haha mike is not honest about being clueless about hockey, he just says ahh we're not talking about that yet its too early. Yet he'll talk about baseball for 3 hours in november. The prank calls make his show good. Tj in new hyde park had the best, "hey mike who do you think has lower expectations on a nightly basis, the new york islanders or your wife?"

Hes got zero sense of humor and thats why he gets pranked daily. If he laughed about falling asleep, or being wrong about the weather people wouldnt hate him. You shouldnt be in the primetime radio spot in NY with no knowledge of hockey

Its the disrespect that drives me insane. Know the basics so you can bluff you're way through it. Not just this I'm better then you because you want to talk about what you want to talk about instead of what I like. Guy's a jackass and I have no idea why people still listen

Exactly, he talks down to people and if you dont talk about what he wants to talk about then youre gone. I called him last monday and talked about the panthers, then tried to sneak in a devils point and he hung up. Evan should have mikes time slot. Evan will talk about anything in the sports world, and he even admits he loves doing it. Hes not the most knowledgeable about hockey, but he'll still talk about it. Mike loves thinking he's right about everything because he'll ask a question then hang up on the caller, theres video of him doing it a couple weeks ago. Ill listen to mike for a little while when im in the car, but the only enjoyable part is when callers call him out because he's such a douche.

Fatcessa is representative of the media in this market. If you are of the opinion that the media provides what the masses truly want, then this market is an awful hockey market. 3 teams combine for near-zero overall media coverage. Can't wait for the old media dinosaurs to die out already.

The prank calls say it all...I think it's gotten to the point where a good portion of his listeners think he's a joke...trainwreck radio.  And he's oblivious to the fact that a lot of people think he's a clown.

I used to listen to him back in the 90s, even the early 2000s, and with the Mad Dog, he was more tolerable.  He was always prone to pomposity, but it just got worse and worse in time, along with many of his other annoying quirks (like the fact he can barely string sentences together without stammering constantly).  One day it finally got to the point where I couldn't take listening to him anymore.  If I know that he's going to have someone on that I really want to hear (someone Met-related usually), I'll put him on, even though he's a terrible interviewer.

The times I have listened recently, I hear a guy who desperately needs an on-air partner.  I hear a guy who only knows how to fill air-time by repeating/stammering/stuttering the same phrases and sentiments over and over (and his "insights" are not terribly enlightening), until he mumbles "Back afta dis".

Evan Roberts, Boomer + Carton, Richard Neer.

All I need to get through work.

I like Evan and Joe, Boomer (like the ex-player perspective he brings).  Neer's a little boring, but OK.

Love Legrecca, but I cannot take Kay, he knows as little about Hockey as Francesca...

Sorry but Benigno is no better than Mike, he might know some hockey but he rarely makes a good point, and laughs at his own stupid jokes, and he uses the same ones every friggin day!!!

Mike defintiely needs a partner, hearing him repeat the same sentence 3 x before he moves on is getting real old... I was Hoping Dog would come back when he was canned by XM, but I guess not...

And the crack pots on ESPN are no better, I can tolerate FAN, usually i cannot deal with those clowns
