Clarkson to Jackets for Nathan Horton

Wow.

Horton's contract is uninsured according to McKenzie, so this makes perfect sense for Columbus - they get a body back for Horton, who will never play again. Toronto gets out of the Clarkson deal but not fully as LTIR is not a cure for all cap issues.

What does Horton's contact being uninsured mean?

Wow.

It means that they owe every cent on it.  If it was insured, then they would only pay the insurance and the insurance company would pay the rest.  Horton isn't going to play again, so Columbus would have to pay his entire salary for him to do nothing.  Clarkson is a body - he's a terrible body in Toronto, but at least he will play and can possibly make positive contributions on the ice.  Maybe he won't, but it beats paying Horton to do nothing.

It means that Columbus was still responsible for paying his salary rather than an insurance company, which would have been the case had his contract been insured.

It's less of an issue for Toronto since the team brings in a ton of money.

This does work out for both teams in a lot of ways.

Obviously, Toronto gets out from under that honker of a contract and clear up a bunch of space. They can afford to pay Horton to do nothing without blinking.

Columbus now get out from under Horton, where the "real money" likely hurts them more than it would a major market like Toronto and they get Clarkson in there who may play better in a smaller market so they're at least getting some sort of return for that $. Plus, Columbus can always buy Clarkson out in the summer if they desire. I doubt they will this offseason, but they have that option. They didn't have that with Horton.

I think Toronto wins for obvious reasons, but the positives for Columbus are there. Clarkson really may just need to get away from that madness to find his game again.

The contract is terrible but Clarkson will help them overall. Basically they got him for nothing

They have to pay his salary, so saying its nothing is a bit of a stretch. They were paying Horton for doing nothing (it just didnt count against the cap). Obviously the actual money is more important to Columbus than Toronto which is of no surprise. Paying Horton's contract with nothing to show for it had to hurt. Now they have options with Clarkson at least. They had none with Horton since Columbus is not a cap team.

I wonder how he feels about this. Should have gotten a no trade cause in his contract, kinda surprised he didn't actually.

He had a limited one. He had 14 teams he could be traded to.
