hi everyone!

i found this forum accidently but i guess i like what i see and read. that's why i'm here now.

i'm a devils-fan from vienna, austria and cheering for them since 1994 (that's when i started to follow the nhl). unfortunately (the guy from germany will agree) it's hard to watch games over here. the only possibility is pay-tv but they broadcast 3 nhl games a week.

it's hard being a devils fan over here. but as unpleasant as the cba-discussions are the better it is over here: lots of nhl-players spend their time playing in european leagues, especially the czech extraliga. that's what made it possible for me to meet my favourite player, patrik elias. he's playing for the "hc znojemsti orli" but i'm sure u all know that. as long as there is no nhl-season i can watch him right across the czech border, 60 miles away from vienna. that's fine :)

check out www.icehockey2005.com for informations on the world championship next year in vienna/innsbruck.

if anyone has a question or wants to tell me anything just go on and do it. i hope i'll have fun in here.

that's all for now :)

Welcome!  What's your take on Elias' play?  From looking at the stats sheet, it doesn't look as if he's playing as well as he could, but we know the stats sheet doesn't tell the whole story.

hi!

the orli-games aren't broadcasted here in austria, so i have to go there and watch the games live. the atmosphere in their stadium is great, people feel with their team and i think patrik knows that. nevertheless, karel rachunek and martin havlat left to play in russia 2 weeks ago and patty is the only nhl-player in the team now besides goalie vokoun.

patty is the crowd's declared darling but i'm not sure if he's happy there. he fits in the team and is a perfect assist-provider. but he seems not to play 100% - maybe because he doesn't want to or because he sees that the level he's playing at is okay for the team.

i talked to him a week ago and he wasn't as happy as i expected him to be because of all that darling-stuff.

maybe he just wants back to the usa, maybe he had a hard day, i don't know.

my feelings are that he isn't the patty he is when playing for the devils, he's more like a guest to this team. if that's what he wants to be, that's fine for him.

although i could watch him every week over here i'd prefer to see him back with the devils.

we all know how the last shortened nhl-season ended ;)

I can tell you from the times I've seen people meet Elias out here he's usually pretty friendly and will blab on and on non-stop with the people outside... I've never seen a star athlete like that before who you'd almost be able to sit at the barstool next to and chew the sh!t with during a football game like you could with Elias... maybe he just doesn't like something weird out there (maybe he missed Gomer chewing his ear off and whoring all the media time )... hey if you get any pics of Elias in action out there I'd gladly post them on my webpage :D

and oh yes... welcome aboard (before I hijack another intro thread :P)

Welcome to the board!!! I think you are the first Austrian. We have at least 2 English posters, 2 French posters, who else from Europe, guys???

I've been to Austria twice, the last time about 18 months ago with my Dad, who was born in Vienna. We went to the records office and got all the places the family had lived when he was small, and took pictures. Plus, we went to the Opera. Not only is he a fan, but my grandmother was in the Chorus before she got married.

It was definitely a nice trip. I loved Vienna, and it was so nice to be able to help my Dad get all the family information.

what's so bad about your politics-section? i'm sorry for all the americans suffering under bush and his fellows.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

nothings is wrong.. just some very different, strong opinions... always a way to cause conflict and debate ... but we debate about hockey too... its only natural for so many people to have those different opinions.

i guess politics is always a touchy subject, as well as war.. so even though we all get along with out devil love.. there tends to be some slight problems over there... i was just forewarning :)

I thought Swede went back to Sweden?  Dunno if it was a permanent move though.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

yup. I'm in sweden right now working as a teacher. I was only supposed to stay here for a couple of weeks, up to a month... but then a girl kinda changed my plans... so now I don't know. I might be stuck up here :doh1:

and sue, I was just kidding... :P

  • 2 months later...

We had an Austrian guy (Klaus) on our old DEvs list that I communicated with pretty often. Also, Scott, you would remember John (a slovak) going to university in Budapest, and he had another buddy that gave us a euro slant on things. Our old list is not as active as before. But, welcome!
