devlman
Totally agree that we can't alienate fans but I don't think we need to let them dictate the way the organizations wants to run itself.. And when it comes to smokers, there aren't a ton at games who do light up during the event (relative to total atte4ndance), and of the ones who do, how many would actually boycott games because of it? Likewise, how many families/people feel alienated when those doors open and smoke wafts into the building? It'll be interesting to see how much of an impact this ends up having, but my guess is not much I never really noticed smoke wafting indoors. If it is a problem, then the easy, non-alienating solution would be to just tell the usher there to focus on keeping the door closed. mxm262
It's so easy to go after smokers and bash them to high heaven but unless you've seen what addiction does to you then you truly can't judge. Oh, I can judge. I've watched two elderly family members spend their last years suffering terrible respitory issues & needing to constaly be attached to oxygen. And they had stopped smoking before I was born in the mid-70s.
Colorado Rockies 1976
I'm not a smoker. (well, tabacco anyway) but I've been around quite a few. I know a lot of people within my family that are smokers. To say "if you can't go 2.5 hours without smoking at a Devils game blah blah blah" is absoutely asinine. It isn't that easy for people that are addicted to it. If it's a state law and there was no choice then that's one thing, however, I see no problem of having an outdoor balcony. It never bothered me nor affected me and to all of the non-smokers here it really didn't effect you either. It's so easy to go after smokers and bash them to high heaven but unless you've seen what addiction does to you then you truly can't judge. I was a smoker and I was addicted. I wasn't as heavy a smoker as some people are, but the cigarettes I did smoke, at the time it felt like I had to have them. As for smokers...sorry, that's THEIR problem. I don't think accommodations need to be made for them. What's everyone supposed to do, make sure that all of these poor smokers have a place to go so that they never have to go more than a few hours without having a cigarette? The Prudential Center isn't the only place where they'll have to deal with not being able to smoke as they please for extended lengths of time. The law is that it cant be in so many feet of an entrance or whatever it is which is why there cannot be a smoking balcony any longer. People should be able to handle going to a sporting event without having a cigarette it has been this way in many other places metlife msg etc. and will now be this way at prudential. If its such an issue and ones life is run so badly by nicotine they can bring nicorette gum

MadDog2020
If this were 5 years ago, I'd be irate... But I quit, so I'm not. Although I do feel empathy for those who do smoke, I hated being told where I could and couldn't smoke, particularly outside. But why alienate people who are trying to enjoy their Devils game experience. If we had a high demand of ticket-buyers, we could afford to enact this policy. This is a zero-win, possible risk strategy for attendance. Anyway, I'm reading this may be entirely due to state law...
Zubie#8
Good on the state. Changing the culture takes time and this is just another step. Its not about the smokers today its about not exposing kids to it.

Jerzey
I'm going to be really offended when they legalize weed but don't allow it anywhere around the arena but keep pushing alcohol on everyone. I guess they wouldn't want a quiet arena though. Till then my couch will always be the best place to watch a game.

Another debate for another day, but I always found that funny...weed was taboo for so long, but booze is just fine. My weed days are pretty much over, but I remember drunken frat bros who would see me toking up back in the 90s start knocking me for it...there was never a shortage of drunks who knocked pot-smoking every chance they got. I wonder if there's ever going to be "weed bars" in the US like there are in Amsterdam. I went to one in 1992 (Amsterdam of course...was only there for one night) and it was lovely...but four hours of chuckling, giggling, and thinking everything you've eaten has never tasted better will always make for a lovely experience. Amsterdamage...one day I will return. Edited September 25, 2014 by Colorado Rockies 1976

BlueSkirt
I'm not a smoker, so I don't care. However, I see no reason why the old policy of having smokers use the first floor balconies was an issue. This is not a Prudential Center policy though. It is a state law that will apply to MetLife Stadium, Izod Center, NJPAC, PNC Bank arts center, etc. the problem is, the Rocks no reentry policy (which is standard at all stadiums), when combined with the law that prevents smoking within 25 feet of the building, effectively prohibits smokers from having a cigarette at any point in time during the event. Time to start "the Chew" ?

I thought I read that tourists can get arrested nowadays for trying to find weed or hash out there. I could be wrong. Either way now we have Colorado, Washington, and Oregon. No need to travel overseas anymore. It does make me wonder if the arena the Avs play in (Pepsi Center?) has an area or bar dedicated to people who want to relax a little while watching the game. Maybe they can even make a section in the arena that has couches instead of chairs.

The thing I remember most about it was not the pot, but that it was by far the dirtiest city (in terms of actualy trash/litter) in all the European cities I have been to (which is actually quite a bit). Amsterdam is overrated as hell.

I think their laws have changed though. I thought I read that tourists can get arrested nowadays for trying to find weed or hash out there. I could be wrong. The laws have changed slightly and are mostly unenforced except outside of the major cities. Amsterdam's incredible, you must go. Oregon/Colorado, etc. can never compare. And that has as much to do with ganja/hookers as it does with its touristic architectural beauty: Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark, Heineken Brewery etc., etc., not to mention Dutch women..... And if you like to smoke a little bit, it's a nice element to add to some sight-seeing of what's one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And no, I'm not sponsored by Amsterdam tourism! I've been to Amsterdam once before. The thing I remember most about it was not the pot, but that it was by far the dirtiest city (in terms of actualy trash/litter) in all the European cities I have been to (which is actually quite a bit). Amsterdam is overrated as hell. I'm curious, when did you go? I've been 4 times in the past 5 years for various reasons (business, vacation, stopover), and I never noticed that it was dirty. Maybe the red light district after a long Saturday night might be in need of a street sweep, but that wasn't anything I ever noticed. sundstrom
not thrilled about this - the balconies satisfied the need. i would only use them during the playoffs and i get that the smell can piss some people off. but its a state law - nothing really the devils can do about it. Vic Rattlehead18
Saying you won't go to a game because you can't smoke is the DUMBEST thing I've heard here. And lawsuit from this Chucktheduck? Are you serious? There is absolutely no possible way a lawsuit can be made because you are not allowed to proceed with a habit. The problem with the balcony is the smoke that comes into the arena. I've had people who were sitting in the sections come to me and complain about smelling smoke and it does get pretty bad. Also there is food right there and it becomes an even bigger health hazard. There will also be changes made near the balconies which would have made it a bigger issue to have smoking there. I don't agree with the e-cig though. But I guess it's because they lead to confusion about if it's a real cig or not. People could complain about seeing someone smoke while it's just electronic but they don't know because they just see a cloud of smoke rise in front of them. It's going to be interesting seeing it be enforced outside at championship plaza. But I guess it'd be the same as like at amusement parks? I dunno. But this policy makes me happy because i hate smoke and the smell and the act of smoking. A lot of people smoke when they drink and that's the issue, not going for 3 hours without one. The cigar stand will most likely take a hit because people can't buy a cigar and then go to the balcony and smoke. Also, it's going to be annoying with people trying to leave to smoke and wanting to come back in. It has been problems in the past already. I'm just waiting for the "I can't have a smoke while i'm here? That's so stupid" and I will have to refrain from saying "You want to have a smoke? I think THAT's stupid."

Speaking of which, do you know what changes? Someone at Media Day told me they had that area blocked off for construction and my guess is that's where the boardwalk is going since it's a wide space, has food stalls right there, and most importantly - would be very visible on TV during the intermissions with Deb and JMac Edited September 26, 2014 by Colin226
