Devils shouldn't forget Pandolfo

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/devils/22245009.html

Now, it's time management shows it appreciates all Pandolfo has done. The sides have been talking this week, but general manager Lou Lamoriello wouldn't reveal Friday if they're close to agreeing on a deal.

The Devils signed unrestricted free agent Dainius Zubrus to a six-year deal at $3.4 million per season last summer and he was essentially a third- or fourth-line player last season, while Pandolfo was earning $836,000. Pandolfo also had to notice that John Madden made nearly $4 million last season for playing a similar role.

Similar role??

Maybe so... but at HALF the production :P

What a hype piece to get Pando overpaid.....

we can't afford to be dishing out money to people who never scored over 13 goals in their career if we think we're going to get the offense fixed.....

I like the guy I'd love for him to stay but I won't scream murder if he is sent on his way now too (same with Brylin)... that money can be spent on offensive upgrades or young Lowell talent.....

great, let them overpay.

jay pandolfo is one of the best defensive players in the league. he's also one of the worst offensive players in the league so it all washes out. this guy has been killing our offense playing more minutes a night than patrik elias and others over the past few seasons.

it's time to stop this insane focus on the checking line.

and once pandolfo loses a step forget it, he is finished. once he goes from 10 goals a year to 5, it's over with, i don't care how good he is at defense.

i'll be happy if he's resigned at less than 2 million per. if not, i can definitely move on - there's a reason why jay was paid 1 million a year pre-lockout.

I love Pando, and wouldn't be against re-signing him, but I think that one thing that could really help us would be to give Zubrus the spot to the left of Madden. He's a very good checker, and he has more offensive ability than Pando has. Also, since he's found it hard to play on one of our two scoring lines, it clears up a spot on one of those lines for a more offensive player, without sticking Zub (3.4m) on the fourth line. A line of Zubrus - Madden - Langenbrunner could be very good, and we'd probably get more offensive contribution from that line than we have had on any Maddolfo checking line in the past.

I agree purely on that 3rd line position; but there's also the issue of rounding out the rest of the lines.

Pandolfo, at top should get 2 mil. The problem is that you cant compare Madden to Pandolfo. Madden takes the face offs, scores goals and is occasionally clutch in big situations. Pandolfo cant do any of that, theyre a great defensive duo but Pandolfo is almost noneffective at offense without Madden. The defense cant be beat but that doesn't mean to overpay.

Tri is bang on. I love Pando and his loyalty and everything he brings to the team but he is the type of player that will start to lose a stride here and there anytime now. When that happens, Pando becomes ineffective at both his defensive play and his little offered offensive punch. The Devils cannot and should not overpay for Pando due to his past. Lou has to make the proper deal for what Pando offers the team now.

I think our checking lines days are pretty much over with, We need to score, so I think Pando might be a goner.

does anybody know what the devils record was while pando was out last year? i thought the devils played well without him.

i would love to see him resigned, but not at any outrageous price. as has been mentioned, he's great defensive forward but a liability as far as offense goes.

I like that idea purely for getting Langenbrunner and his hands of stone away from the top two lines...

I'm pretty sure we went on that 9 game winning streak without him, he may have played in the first two games though I'm not sure.

Well one thing to remember is that it's not like our 3rd line gets 3rd line minutes. They're out when the other team's 1st line is out, almost all of the time, so they log a lot of ice, therefore it might be time for the Devils to realize that they are hurting their chances of scoring by not having someone who can actually score a decent amount playing alongside Madden. If our checking line wasn't used so frequently, then I wouldn't have a problem with Pando taking his spot as usual, but they get so much ice that I really feel like that line is one of our main problems when it comes to reasoning for our not scoring goals. Assuming that we get some sort of top 6 offensive player, our lines could look like...

Parise - Elias - Gio

xxxxx - Zajac - Bergfors? (if he makes the team, which I think he will)

Zubrus - Madden - Langenbrunner

crapshoot of players (Vrana? Pelley? Clarkson...)

or...

Elias - xxxxx - Gio

Parise - Zajac - Bergfors

Zubrus - Madden - Langenbrunner

crapshoot of players (Vrana? Pelley? Clarkson...)

or anything, really. I think that if we get somewhat busy with UFA's, bringing in maybe one high caliber offensive player and one support/role guy, we could have a well-formed offense. Preferably, that offensive player would be a center, allowing Elias to go back to the left and putting Parise in a more suitable role of second line winger for now.

Anyways, I'm supposed to be writing a paper for my summer class but No-Hockey Madness got the better of me and I had to play GM for a few minutes.

Yep, pretty much says it all.

<$2 mil/per season, fine

Like Tri says, if he ever starts to lose a step and his defensive abilities, then he's liability everywhere on the ice. No thanks.

And with Sutter coaching, I think it only encourages Lou to NOT re-sign Pandolfo.. Sutter wants offense and Lou needs to understand that.. judging by the fact there has been no resign of Pando yet, I assume Sutter/Lou are on the same page with that belief that its time for offense.

Don't think jay is going anywhere but if he does I highly doubt it will be the Rangers. If anything it could be back home in Boston or the rumors that TB is interested in him. Pandolfo needs to stay here in New Jersey on the Madden line. Cannot break those two guys apart IMO. Lou needs to sign Pandolfo NOW.
