I really am beginning to hate our fans.

Again it's not about being offensive. The Rangers suck chant is an inferiority complex. Especially when you're doing it in a middle of a game vs the Flames. You care about an opposing team more than your own and that's a problem. The yes chant is stupid, uncool and childish but it doesn't show an inferiority complex vs YS or Rangers suck/Flyers swallow in a random game vs a western team.

I don't have a problem with YS, though I respect the point others are making about it showing an inferiority complex. I think there are 2 real issues at games.

The first is an overly aggressive attempt by ownership to sanitize things. Sporting events are not pg. they're fun, and kids can certainly go and have a great time, but they're gonnahear some things. As others have said in this thread, it's up to the parents to make sure their kids know that what they hear at the Rock stays at the Rock, and give some of the cheers context (while ignoring others). I applaud the owners trying to bring in more fans, and I'm more than fine with policing some of the more unsavory elements of the fan experience, but ownership has sometimes overreached, and by seemingly trying to create a Disney environment at games (something a fan base with some Mickey Mouse issues takes exception to), they've sometimes created a morgue.

The other problem is the exact opposite. There is a growing group of fans whose antics resemble those of Flyers and Rags fans. The YS crowd has been unfairly lumped in with those guys, just like the anti-YS crowd has been lumped in with the sanitizes. Those fans do a lot more than yell "you suck." Whether they're spilling beer everywhere, shouting ridiculous, nonsensical obscenities around kids, or for that matter anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the game, for what seems like 3 straight hours, or, worse, starting fights with people out of some stupid need to protect their turf, they spoil the game for a lot of people. I don't think a game is like a job or a library (see above, and fwiw, i stand in the South Ward for Red Bulls games), but purchasing a ticket does not give you the right to do whatever the fvck you want. I also don't appreciate the fact that I felt the need to defend an away fan from my fellow Devils fans at one game. This crowd is still not huge, but they're getting worse, and the team's poor play isn't helping.

I don't know how to solve these problems. I think policing drunk fans more aggressively, while ignoring the low level obnoxious stuff will help. I also think separating fans is a good thing. Yankee Stadium has family sections, and Red Bull Arena gave the South Ward to the supporters, so people who don't want to hear f bombs, or a couple thousand people singing to put someone against the wall and shoot him, can just hang out in other parts of the stadium, where they can feed off the supporters' passion without hearing all the details. This could especially help the Devils, as many fans straddle the line between passionate and annoying. Keeping them away from the sensitive is a good thing. Especially because it allows passionate fans to do their thing, without as much interference from an overzealous front office. For that matter, it allows the supporters to feed off of each other's energy without dealing with people who don't want to make noise. This was working with what became the Diablos before ownership (previous) got involved and fvcked that up.

Short of major fixes, fans need to compromise. Don't be d!cks to kids, or more chill fans if you're louder, but don't expect a professional, profanity free, environment if you're not. Support the team without starting fights with other people. Stay passably sober, or at least sober enough to make good decisions. Stop whining that somebody talked trash against a rival at a sporting event.

I remember when all of your posts on this topic were "I don't care that we do the YS chant, I just wish they at least waited until after the goal song to do it." Now they're doing that, and you're still complaining. Just found it funny because I remember you going on about it for PAGES of debate. Carry on.

They're still doing it during the goal song bro.

..

Chanting YS at the other team doesn't in any way shape or form show support for the Devils.

Red bulls fans were doing it after they score a goal before the islanders were doing it.

Are the Red Bulls a hockey team?

You could argue, none of it really accomplishes anything; sports fandom in general. Why even go to games? Why spend money to go when we can watch it perfectly on TV? Does the loud crowd noises of a full arena even affect a pro athlete's performance? They're pros, right? They know how to do their job, why even go? Why even follow sports in general? We could all use our time watching sports to accomplish way more meaningful things, right?

What's next, we shouldn't mock Henrik with a "Heeeeeennrikkkkk!" chant when he lets in a softie? It's not gonna hurt his feelings so why do it? Are we insecure because he's so good???

But YS is doubly stupid since other fans make fun of us for chanting it.  Because it makes us look fvcking stupid.

I think it's original as far as hockey chants go. It shows the crossover appeal Daniel Bryan and WWE has and it's really cool that they incorporated other pop culture, relevant and current pop culture into their fanbase and the team with the chant. Certain fans bitch and moan about YS and it being "embarrassing" and "uncouth" but something like this is something those detractors should of come up with if they truly wanted to please everyone. I'm not an Islanders fan but I think it's pretty cool. It's hip, non-offensive and gets the crowd going.

There isn't really any "current or original" hockey chants TBH. This is pretty fresh. Not sure why so many fans are upset about it, then again I don't get why so many fans get upset over something which pretty much means "HEY OPPOSING TEAM, YOU STINK!"

What is it that you detractors want? Continued silence and miscued LGD chants? Islanders fans did this one right.

Also, I'm in support of chanting "RANGERS SUCK!". That's our biggest rival, it keeps the rivalry strong and has the vibe of "no matter where the Rangers are  playing, they will always suck".  I just think the "Flyers swallow/Crosby watches part" should stop.

I wish we had something like the Yes chant.  Problem with our fanbase is we only make noise when we score a goal.  We have a fanbase that also seems to NOT enjoy LGD chants.  I'd love to have a loud arena, but it needs to be the right kind of noise.

I think some of you guys are on a different wavelength than I am.  Again - I've said this before in various threads, but I think you guys are taking this too literally.

In my humble opinion, if you're in the building making noise - you're supporting the team.

What other fans are you speaking of?  Links, articles?

I'd love to see this, because thus far I've only seen Devils fans bitching about it.

I hate taking people to games who don't know it because it's fvcking embarrassing to have identify as a fan of the same team with thousands of idiots who chant YOU SUCK every 5 minutes, but can't be bothered to chant anything else.

Admittedly, I wouldn't need all ten fingers to count the number of games I've been to this year so I have no problem saying that my opinion shouldn't carry as much weight as you regulars.  Just expressing my thoughts on the matter.

It might be an age thing too - whenever I bring friends we're all in that 22-25 'young professional' range so I guess the silly chants don't bother us too much (*except 'Flyers swallow'.  That one needs to be eradicated, I'm not sure why that hasn't been actively targeted yet.  It's by far the most vulgar of the chants).

I dunno, I still just think this whole thing is being blown incredibly out of proportion.  I don't blame people for chanting something when the Devils have been as bad and as boring as they've been this year.  I'm just not inclined to lead a LGD chant when they're getting outshot 2:1 by some of the worst teams in the league.

But again, this whole thing boils down to differing opinions - which is why there's probably been 1000s of posts on this forum alone about it.

Most of the people I bring are 22-28 - and they all think "what's with the white trash chants?" that's pretty much what we collectively look like.

Then I'd suggest bringing people who don't have a stick jammed up their ass. Like it, hate it, who goes a sh!t- this has been blown so far out of proportion it's obsurd. I have no idea why you guys are still wasting time arguing this garbage.

Because I'm bored. And it's not a stick up the ass, it's common sense. We look like a$$holes. Chanting You Suck at a team when we're in last place. Want to be relevant, chant the name of the guy who just scored the goal with the vuvuzela retards. I mean, whatever happened to the Mike Miller chant, that was actually nice and creative.

Truthfully, the thing I find funniest about this issue is how polarizing it is.

Also, if you are worried that your friends judge you in some way based on things that other people whom you don't even know are chanting, you might want to consider getting some better friends. If you didn't do it, what difference does it make to you what your friends think?

Because in some cases it's like bringing a girl I'm dating to her first hockey and/or Devils game - trying to impress - those kinds of situation. It's off putting. Try brining a family friend too, or a significant other's family to a game, it's just stupid.

Unless they grew up in a bubble and have never been to a sporting event I really don't see how it's an issue.

Also, I don't think that the things other people are chanting will prevent you from impressing a girl, and if they do, she's not that into you.

Simple- if you're that worried about it, bring her bowling. Problem solved. I'm going to a game with a bunch of coworkers next week- if they judge ME based off of a bunch of a$$holes chanting 'you suck' 'flyers swallow' blah blah blah, then they're pretty fvcking stupid people to begin with. And seeing as how I could give a fvck what people think about me- particularly stupid people- I'm not gonna give a sh!t.

That sounds awesome!

I'm not for that, trust me.  But for those people hoping for a more 'mature' atmosphere (a la MSG) they'll probably get it in a few years.

I know I personally won't attend a regular season game again if it becomes corporate like that - but I attend a max of 10 games a year so my opinions aren't exactly priority.

Sounds like you bring some real winners to the games. Maybe you shouldnt care so much about how naive and ignorant your friends are at a hockey game.

Kind of what I was saying, yet blunter and more direct. Don't worry so much what people think about you and get better, non-judgmental friends.

Oh, and not the possibility of a fight happening between two players in the game and 15,000 rabid fans cheering/egging them on?

Hockey's probably the fastest, most aggressive, most dangerous of the 4-5 major sports in the United States. Most people know what they're getting themselves (or their kids) into going to a hockey game.
