Anyone gone to a Rockhoppers game in West Orange?

Trying to see how it is. I have tix for next month.

I've actually been meaning to check out the Hudson Valley Bears, who play their home games in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie. I guess all the teams play each other a lot, being that there are only 4 or 5 of them. Seems like good local hockey.

Yeah. It's like supposed to be a 50 games season amongst 5 teams. I think they get a New Hampshire team next year.

Rockhoppers play like 5 mins from my house. I just haven't been able to check them out. Like you said, some good local hockey is, well, a good thing. :)

I went to their opening night. I was fully expecting to be the only one there, with the Devils at home and the Rangers playing as well, on top of the fact that they didn't advertise and nobody knew about the team pretty much. They had about 1800 people there. The hockey was pretty much awful and they didn't even have their names on the back of their jerseys so I had no idea who was who, but the organization put on a good show. They had a live band playing on that big ledge that's over the entrance to the seating area and had a mites game, a contest on the ice that ended up getting everyone a free slice of pizza, and the usual stuff like throwing shirts to the crowd. My ticket was $5, parking was free and the concessions were cheap. I'd go again for the hell of it.

Did they have beer? I wouldn't think so. But just wondering.

You know, I have no idea. We ate a huge dinner before the game didn't want anything to eat or drink and I didn't really notice if they had beer. I just noticed the concession prices were about half of what the Rock charges and walked in. I would guess they don't, and I think 90% of the crowd that night was under the legal drinking age anyway.

Yeah, I figure it would be more like a family/minor-league baseball vibe. So a lotta kids. I'll report back.

Going to game tonight. Hoping for the best. Like that I could get tix right behind the bench day of game. :)

You could probably get tix on the bench if you wanted. Yeah, that ol' gag. The Devils Fan Club actually got brought into the locker room for the pre-game pep talk before a game last month.

I've been to a few Rockhoppers games doing play-by-play on my website IYMSportsRadio.com, including tonight vs. Danbury(shameless plug). The quality of play is solid. It's single A, it's not supposed to be anything else but that. They play for the love of the game and the chance to been seen. A few players have even been called up by the ECHL and AHL. The crowds started off great but have dipped some. I'm hopeful it will improve. The fans that do show up seem to have a good time. The food is cheap but no beer since it's a VERY kid-friendly place. They put on a good show with the mid-ice shot on goal contest in between periods, the post-game chuck-a-puck and post-game autograph session. I hope whoever comes out to these games enjoys it for what it is. The Rockhoppers are a good team in this league though. I think any hockey fan would enjoy the action.

Had a great time! Definetly recommend. Not very expensive and the play is good.

My review of the Rockhoppers vs. Madhatters 12/30/08

The woman at concessions said every other team has beer at their games and their revenue is doing better than Jersey. Being kid friendly is fine. But kids don't spend money. If you want to survive, you have to play to the folks that have money in their wallets.

I'm not sure if the Codey has a liquor license. But perhaps have Friday night games with beer and Sunday matinees without.

I'd hate to lose this team because they marketed to the wrong audience. I had a lot of fun and hope they hang around!

As far as the beer thing goes. I don't think Codey has any interest in getting a liquor license. Hopefully the Rockhoppers do and can get one themselves and sell. Glad you enjoyed yourself last night.

Hey everyone. I'm attaching a link to a video of the game. Check it out. Hopefully you'll enjoy it and come to a game. I was lucky enough to provide the play-by-play. Be gentile, I've only been doing play-by-play since February. Maybe I can replace Cangelosi someday :)

I went several weeks ago against Brooklyn and it wasnt that bad. Not a lot of people which is good because you can sit anywhere and even if you want to stand behind the goal is def cool as well. Check it out!

BTW, I might be the only person to have a Rockhopper jersey. :)

Went to see the Hudson Valley Bears (they play a few miles from where I live). Apparently they are the worst team in the league, 1-14. It was rough. They were basically thrown together at the last minute when another team(Rome?) backed out. I read an article where one of the players said he met his teammates the day of the first game because he got transferred from Brooklyn by the league itself. The coach/gm was hired 2 days before the first game.

All in all though, they put up a fight against the Aces(best team in the league), i think it was 7-4 with an empty netter. Can't really see it lasting with only about 50 people there, many of whom were fans of the other team. But I shouldn't judge on one game, I guess.

I think Hudson Valley has the smallest facility in the league, currently. Hopefully they can stick it out for another season at least.

They have line of site for 2009-2010 because they are putting a team in New Hampshire, as well.
