That breakaway challenge was hard and awkward to watch.

it was obviosusly ment to just let the players mess around and have some fun show the fans a little bit of trickery etc. but i saw alot of people annoyed that it had nothing to do with actual skill. The hardest shot part of the competition should be a good watch.

I didnt mean it was a lack of skill, it just wasn't funny or entertaining except for Tarasenko and Elliott.

I for one love the all-star festivities. That said, it is clear that many of the players don't want to go. They should just cancel it. Sydney Crosby is an a$$hole.

Yeah , alot of these guys look like they really couldn't care less about this. Not that I blame them. I'm sure they'd rather be recovering or playing a regular game. Duncan Keith seemed bored out of his mind just now.

whats up with crosby he got injured or something right? i would have to imagine that for a good handful of the players it could be a bit awkward around each other. Edited by 2ELIAS6

Yeah, I think almost all the players would rather not be there (though to be fair to Keith, he ain't exactly Mr. Personality). But it's like what Getzlaf said, "it's important to be there for the fans" and I think a lot of players realize that and do it to be good representatives of the game. That's why Crosby bowing out is so low. He clearly could play through whatever he has. He looked fine last game. And it's only worse that he has only showed up to one his entire career, not that all of his absences were his fault. This miss is bullsh!t.

That said, if they can't get the top stars to go, they should just stop holding the event.

Yeah...injured.

these skills comp events just seemed a LOT more fun a whole bunch of years ago before NBC got involved and they tried to push too hard for "creativity" and stuff like that, that breakaway even was a thing of painful to watch....though as a crappy hockey player I feel better seeing NHL guys wipe out during drills B )

....oh and Elias on the shootout

100% agreed. It's become a complete gimmick. I think they were trying to copy the NBA model. The dunk competition gets just as idiotic.

I'm ok with gimmicky....its just they sucked all the fun out of it in the process

Curious of others' experience. When I was younger I was a huge fan of both the MLB and NHL All Star game. I went to it when it was at MSG, and would otherwise be pretty invested them every year. Now I can't remember the last time I watched either, and I actually turned down a ticket to the all star game at Yankee stadium to see an advanced screening of Dark Knight.

So do people think it's always an event that's aimed at younger fans, or have they lost their appeal in general?

It could be a combination of things..... sports have certainly lost their innocence.....fans are more and more aware by the day how much the sport is business first then sport second, and that's soured people on things like this....add in sponsorships, overhype (for God's sake NFL MEDIA DAY has a goddamn sponsor now) and basic oversaturation of the product as a whole...the fun and the innocence are gone from all these events, and I don't think its coming back.....

That's possible, although maybe all star games are just for the kids to begin with. Or maybe what Jerry Seinfeld said is correct that all we're really doing is rooting for the laundry, and the individual players don't matter as much.

I have to disagree that it is the sponsorships that are taking away from the event. As I said, it's the gimmicky events that are killing it for me. The silly breakaway challenge, the stupid trick shot thing, and the absence of some of the game's top players have all combined to turn the thing into a dud.

Also you originally said, "these skills comp events just seemed a LOT more fun a whole bunch of years ago before NBC got involved and they tried to push too hard for "creativity" and stuff like that, that breakaway even was a thing of painful to watch..." That seems to me like your issue is with the dumb events. But than you replied to me that it isn't, so I am left a little confused.

I also think Daniel makes a good point that the event appeals more to younger fans.

That was insane. My favorite skills save is this gem.

I was there. Great moment.

The breakaway thing is ultra lame, they should just make the shootout thing into an elimination shootout where you you keep shooting until you don't score. I'd rather watch guys try actual shootout moves for 10+ mins rather than watch that crap. For all I care, they could just do that, the accuracy shooting and the hardest shot and call it a day. Maybe the fastest skater too, but that's about it.

They did that for the last few skills competitions.

It's a combination of things, the second comment was more me thinking deeper into why it didn't seem fun to me this year

having to hear buffoons like Roenick and McGuire all night doesn't help either, why is NBC incapable of hiring good, interesting sports people for ANY event? They either find excessive blowhards who never won in their sport (Mlibury, Roenick, Matt Millen) .....or tiny annoying gnats (McGuire, Bob Costas)....this is the first time in years I was home and watched the thing....it felt more like a chore and I stuck with it since nothing else was on TV as opposed to enjoying the event

I think it would be cool if every team did their own individual skills competition during the break. I'd like to know how hard Gelinas' slap shot is and who our fastest skater is.

They USED to....I think a few times like Montreal might still do so....I guess lack of attendance to the events killed the idea....
