Mitico12
Kessel to NJ only if they retain salary. I would do it.
HOLLYWOOD
I seriously hope we don't get Kessel. Timid, quiet, weak guy. Not a leader. He can score, but he won't survive the Devils' system. No way. (in my opinion, of course) Kessel is like poison Ivy, anyway, Lou would be crazy to even think of Kessel as a Devil. Your other post about Clarkson's 'Primetime' trade value and yet another Lou getting zero back... Last week SportsNet's NHL Hockey Central, enervating mouth of Doug McLean covered the history of all the top talent Lou let walk for nothing and basically hurting the frachise. Colorado Rockies 1976
Good question. I think the reality was we were a better team then. We are dog sh!t right now, back then we were still dominating play but not finishing, this year we don't do either. Scroll back a few pages and you'll see that the statement you're replying to was debunked...Devils weren't 6-8 points out at the time, they were in 7th place, which means the circumstances as far as the standings go were quite different. Anyway, I think the reason Clarkson was kept was that Lou thought the Devils still had a shot to get in, and crazy as it sounds now, Clarkson wasn't that far removed from the stretch that saw him score 40 goals in 93 regular season games. I think Lou was hoping Clarkson would get hot again (he was still getting a lot of shots on goal, but they simply stopped going in)...sadly, they needed him to get hot, as guys who could put the puck in the net for the Devils in 2012-13 were few and far between. The soild team possession numbers also probably had Lou believing the team could turn things around. As far as the past goes, the more I think about it, the more I think a lot of the reasons behind Lou's "gotta go for it" mentality had to do with Marty, who simply got treated as being a much better player than he really was over the balance of his final four seasons here. I think Lou still thought of as Marty as being at or near his prime almost to the very end (the 50-game stretch to end the 2012 regular season and playoffs I think fed heavily into that), and felt he had to keep doing whatever he needed to try to keep the team afloat and winning in the present while Marty was still a Devil. I disagreed with Tri pretty strongly about Lou re-signing Marty to his last Devils contract (think Tri wanted to let Marty walk IIRC), but although I'll never have a bad word to say about Marty (just like I won't about Lou), Marty's last two seasons here ultimately hurt this team...his below-average puckstopping hurt them in both seasons (as did the Devils not having any of their goaltending draft picks work out). There's definitely hindsight with this one, and of course no one gets do-overs, but ultimately, the Devils might've been better off now if they had just bitten the bullet and let Marty leave two years ago. I agree Kessel is not the ideal guy but let's be honest, if the price is right, you can't say "I hope we don't get him." Bottom line is that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to acquire guys like Kessel. They are getting locked up long term and we desperately need a scoring option like him. But all that being said I think the price would be way too high for it to be worth it. Yeah, unfortunately these guys are very hard to come by. If you're not developing them in your system, you're stuck signing them via UFA or trading for them, and the ones that are available tend to be on iffy contracts like Kessel's. It wouldn't give me the warm and fuzzies, that's for sure.
SterioDesign
not saying i want Kessel but at least he can score off the rush and has lots of speed. We don't have that. That's actually hurting the team a lot cause the whole team is slow and we're even slowing our breakouts in the neutral zone so that the whole team follow and settle in the offensive zone. Looking at other good teams play and you see a lot of teams like Chicago, Blues and especially MTL. I dont know how many breakaways they can get or plays where a guy gets a long pass in the neutral zone and he's all alone or has a good chance off the rush. It's all speed. And of course just having that dimension... thats a few extra goal in a season.

CarpathianForest
This whole trade deadline I've felt that Lou has been pretty rusty. A 3rd for Zids? A second and third for Jagr? I think more could have been gotten from bot those deals.

I think more could have been gotten from bot those deals. I think the Jagr return is great. 2nd and 3rd for a 43 year old? That's fine. You can't expect much for Zid due to his NTC. Maybe that was the best offer that he would accept. I'm less concerned about those two but more worried that we couldn't dump more (Ryder, Havlat). I want more picks.
redruM
Sorry but IMHO to this point ( 1 hour left I think???) LL has failed, he's proven to me that he no longer can get it done, he needed to trade as much dead wood as possible, and if you tell me he had nothing to trade, well he put this team toghether so that is his fault as well... We need a new GM...
SS-SS
I dont understand how some of you guys are talking about Kessel. I dont know if you heard, but the guy is a minus 100 when it comes to attitude and this is true regardless of the situation in Toronto. This is a guy who tells the reporters " I really dont care" when asked about the team.Do you picture Lou even thinking of him ? We are talking about the guy that chooses YOUR number ! That inspects your face for facial hair ! Lou would've killed Kessel in his sleep and status Quoed the judge through his trial.

DJ Eco
When does the deadline end? I thought it was 3:00 PM EST It is, although it can take 30 minutes, an hour, two hours for the trade details/confirmation to leak; probably especially in Lou's case... DJ Eco
Lou would've killed Kessel in his sleep and status Quoed the judge through his trial. Lou: "I will not take any questions about whether I've done or haven't done certain things to the alleged victim, or give any comment whatsoever about what things were said, not said, or understood between myself and the victim prior to the events the prosecutor are claiming may have happened. Everything's status quo." Prosecutor: "Are you pleading the fifth?" Lou: "The response to your question will be provided in due time, but for now, everything's status quo and I have no comment." Z-Man
"Oh we got robbed for Zidlicky." "Why can't we dump more players?" Sorry folks, but 29 other teams are not garbage pickers. Getting something of value for two declining players at a combined age of 81 with expiring contracts is not bad. I'm pretty much done with this board and the usual folks who have completely ruined the experience. No wonder so many people have left and don't come back. It's basically just a complain-fest. Not too mention a good portion of it deals with utterly ridiculous topics (hello, goal song and "you suck" chants).

CarpathianForest
Still waiting for the news that Lou has traded for a washed up player or a barely 4th liner. Trade day isn't done until he Lou does that.

The funny part is most Devils boards and groups were terrified of the prospect that we'd make ZERO moves this weekend. We made two pretty decent moves and it makes me happy. Selective memory is a wonderful thing. Seriously - holy sh!t am I sick of seeing these whiny posts about the "old guard". Enough already - if you don't like it here, move on. Keep the pointless romanticizing to yourselves. We're an active Devils community that is a thousand times better than hfboards and the various facebook groups. People have strong opinions, and they discuss them freely. It's a message board. Do some of you guys even realize how boring this place would be if we all just held hands and sang kumbaya all the time?
