Anyone going to MSG tomorrow?

Recommended Posts

I haven't been to MSG in like 10+ years, but thinking of going tomorrow night. Usually see tickets for $90-100+ but there's some good deals in the $60ish range for tomorrow in the Blue Seats... Anyone else going? Anyone have any words of advice whether or not I should get tickets in the Blue Seats? haha...

I know Rangers fans aren't like Flyers fans, but is it worth the hassle or should I spend a little extra money and go somewhere in the 200s?

I wanna check the new MSG out eventually.  I never actually went to the old MSG.  I heard too many horror stories about the sight lines and whatnot.  But the new MSG is supposed to be really nice.

I took my wife to see the Eagles there on Saturday night (she's a big fan)...I think we were the only people under 50 in the building (sure felt that way).  The new MSG is a major improvement over the old one, in pretty much every possible way.

That being said, I don't know what happened, but when the concert ended, there was some SERIOUS bottlenecking at our escalator tower...and it was very warm in the tower to boot.  The lines to get out of the building didn't move for at least 10 minutes (might have been longer).  Don't know if something happened down below, but it seemed odd that we couldn't even MOVE for that long.

I sat in the upper level 2 years ago before they were redone (only the lower bowl was renovated at that point).. The areas that had been renovated were very nice, but the areas that weren't updated were awful!!!

Anyway, just expect the fans in the blue seats to be absolute scumbags.. These are the real Ranger fans, not the suits in the lower level discussing the stock market over tuna ceviche and martinis.. They will say a ton of nasty sh!t about our franchise/players, and probably heckle you a good amount.. Wear thick skin and a smile.. Remember, they are a very bitter bunch.. With Marty in net, expect the worse to come out of them.. Jealousy will do that to you

Also, the food is pretty expensive so I'd eat before going in but that's just me.. They have a $20 lobster roll and also serve Hill Country BBQ if you feel like splurging in the arena

I wonder if they got rid of the overwhelming urine smell......

I hate to say it, because hating the Rangers for me means hating the building they play in too, but I have to admit...they did a great job fixing it up and making it current (from the inside, anyway).

They've made some upgrades but it's pretty much lipstick on a pig. You can't really widen concourses or anything...or make larger/more bathrooms. Those problems remain. But they have made it shinier. Of course that won't last forever

The concourses do feel bigger and wider...but still a bit tight.  They have some Ranger/Knick displays (jerseys and whatnot) here and there...I would like to see the Devils do some more of that.

lip stick on a pig i like that lol..Unfortunately there's always some scum bag to ruin and deface something nice and new..like whoever the trash balls Andre that spit their gum on the floors of the rock and just ruin the nice newness of the arena in general.

I was tempted to go to that Eagles concert, especially after having watched a fascinating documentary on them on Showtime recently. How was the show?

As for the renovated MSG, I thought I had heard there are some obstructed-view seats somewhere in the upper level. I don't know whether or not that's true.

You would really think to position your seat as to avoid Rangers fans? I love sitting near opposing fans, there's a lingering feeling of a fight about to break out that's equally as exciting as the game. GO! and sit your ass right in Ranger country

That's what I'm saying.. I was in Boston for that win and didn't hold anything back in the stands.. Just cheered like crazy for goals and also clapped as I normally would for nice plays and penalties.. Had a couple peanuts hit the guy in front of me after that 4th GWG but that was it (pretty funny too).. Did the same thing in Philly and didn't hear a peep the whole night

Now I will say that when I went to MSG it was Rangers vs Flyers and they yelled at my gf for no reason.. It was also a Saturday game so everyone was drunk and very Jets-crowd like

The Eagles were always known more for being a technical concert band in their heyday, more worried about delivering note-perfect performances than spontaneous ones.  When you go see an Eagles show, you're going to hear the songs as they pretty much sound on the albums.  To their credit, even though all of the remaining Eagles are in their mid-60s, they're still pretty capable of hitting all the harmonies and the notes.  They are smart (the Eagles, especially Don Henley and Glenn Frey, have always been savvy businessmen, almost CEO-like in their approach from Day 1) and know their limitations, so they have extra musicians on stage to help flesh out their vocals and sound.  I have to admit, there wasn't one single cringe moment where I thought "Oh man, that was painful".

On the songs where Don Henley played drums (they had a second drummer/percussionist who would handle the "heavy lifting" tunes), the drum track was often subtley stripped down from the original, and made simpler to play.  Surprisingly, this didn't hurt the quality of the songs at all, and in some cases (like Witchy Woman), actually gave some songs a bit of more of a driving, straight ahead feel.  As far as the playlist went, it was everything you'd expect to hear...the only song that didn't make the cut was "Wasted Time" (though leading into the second act, the instrumental, strings-heavy Wasted Time reprise was played over the speakers).  In the first act, the Eagles started with the mellower, country-rock stuff from their early days (Bernie Leadon, who was invited to perform on this tour, was on stage for this part of the show), then worked into the more rock-n-roll portion of their career.  The first act had both Henley and Frey sharing anecdotes about the band's history and their days playing in Linda Ronstadt's backing band before breaking off to form the Eagles.  These moments were interesting (though if you saw the documentary, you were familiar with them already...later in the show, instead of Henley and/or Frey relating these moments live, clips from the doc were played on the big screen), but just like everything else involving the Eagles, they had an almost over-rehearsed feeling to them.  OK, I tell a story.  I make a joke.  I wait for the laughter from the joke to die down.  I continue.  Though it's always interesting to hear stories from the guys who lived the life, it becomes obvious pretty quickly that every word is scripted.

Joe Walsh is the guy who really brings excitement and vigor to the show, without question.  Everyone else is technically terrific, but when they're not sitting, they're pretty much standing in place and singing and playing their instruments...as good as they sound, there's a very robotic aura to their performances.  Walsh plays and acts like he's not only at least 20 years younger than his bandmates, but really seems to be having flat-out FUN...this guy was born to do what he does.  The rest of the Eagles are all business.  Walsh got the most applause and kicked it up several notches every time the spotlight was on him.  The Eagles performed quite a bit of Joe's solo/previous band material (Funk #49, Rocky Mountain Way, Life's Been Good, among others) and I think some of these songs got more reaction out of the crowd than the Eagles' own material did.  None of Henley's or Frey's solo material was covered (a very good thing in Frey's case, as his VERY era-specific 80s content has not aged well at all, compared to Henley's).

Stuart Smith does a credible job channeling Don Felder, but he sounds like a guy doing a very good imitation of Don Felder.  I think the Eagles suffered a bit by not having the real deal on stage with them.  Joe Walsh's presence helps the on-stage product immensely (if he was not there, the show would've been almost sleep-inducing), but Frey himself admitted, in multiple interviews, that the Eagles were at their peak when both Felder and Walsh were in the band.  It would be great if Felder, Henley and Frey could somehow resolve their differences, but it's clear that that's extremely unlikely to happen.  Frey sang "Take It to the Limit" in Randy Meisner's absence (health issues wouldn't allow him to perform...like Leadon, he was also invited back to perform on this tour), and mentioned that Meisner couldn't be there to sing the song himself, but said he and the rest of his bandmates still love him and wish him the best.  Felder didn't get so much as a mention, as though he never existed at all, which I found kind of sad in a way.  More than a few attendees around me mentioned that they wished Felder was still with the band, that as strong as the rest of the band sounded, that something was missing.  I agree.

I was never a huge Eagles fan back in the day (my dad played Hotel California on vinyl constantly when it first came out, back when I was 6 years old), but between my dad and the constant radio airplay they've gotten through the years, I've always been extremely familiar with their catalog.  Based on what I knew of them (from the Showtime doc and things I've heard), they were exactly what I expected them to be.  Hardcore Eagles fans might be disappointed that Felder isn't part of this, but since he hasn't been in the band since 2001, you kind of know that going in.  If I was to rate the show on a scale of 1-to-10, I'd give it an 8.  Kind of hard to believe most Eagles fans wouldn't leave the show very satisfied.

haha This is true!... I ended up getting tickets, sitting in the 200s though! Found cheaper seats there than the 400s actually.

Represent!! And be ready for the lolz fest as, at least 2 years ago, half their intro video was a 1994 highlights real.. Again crack up as they talk about their "tradition" as a franchise, still not even sure what they are referring to there (1 cup in 70 years, pricing out their fans in favor of suits drinking cocktails, or perhaps the repeatedly failed health inspections of their food services)..

Oh and be loud and proud when we score!

Turns out I'm in a weird section. It's "200" level but it's under some of the luxury boxes. It's like a 200 level balcony type of things. I think there's only 4 rows with 10 seats each. Must be one of those sections that got cut after the renovations, pretty strange.

Went 2 years ago and sat in the old blue seats(as Colin said only the bottom was renovated at the time).  I was thinking of going tonight, but I doubt it at this point.  Rags fans were fine.  I did get popcorn thrown at me after the game, but took it as fun, but ribbed the jerkoff throwing it, and even some Rags fans told him to cut the sh!t.

Well.... That was.....

GLORIOUS.

I'll be doing it again next time, and with a group. Man, real Rangers fans have TOTALLY been priced out of their arena, didn't see one really diehard fan until after the game. So tame, and the atmosphere is quiet, even after a goal. What a mausoleum, quiet as sh!t for most of the game, even when they were outplaying us. The price increases and seat layout changes over the past few years has totally changed the demographic of that sh!thole.

The place was louder when the Devils scored tonight.  lol

How many Devils fans were there?

What's sad is that new Yankee Stadium is a beautiful ballpark.  What sucks about it is that the acoustics aren't as good as the old place.  So the crowd noise just isn't the same.  The upper deck isn't as steep and the RF porch isn't as close to the field.  Also the obstructed views in CF suck.  Overall though it still a nice ballpark.  But the atmosphere is terrible.  As a Yankees fan, it hurts to hear the place so quiet all the time.
