Why are people insisting that Butler play on the first line. And how has nobody called them out for this.

the FIRST line?!?!

:doh1:

While I agree he's not a prototypical first line player, he's hung with top-flight players before. Ottawa used him with Spezza and Michalek two years ago when he put up 20+ points in 30-some games. When he's hot, he can score.

I'm all for Eric Fehr. He was pretty good with the Caps. I'm hoping Lou does do a little wheeling and dealing before the season. Perhaps he didn't make that many moves in the off season because of the ownership situation and anticipation of the lockout. Now he's good to go.

And his two goals when he was on the Jets?

Just saying, Semin would've looked good on the second line for 5m/ year or whatever he signed for. Just for the pure goal scoring ability.

David Clarkson as a 2nd line winger makes me borderline nauseas

l

If Clarkson in the top 6 makes you nauseas, then how does having Tedenby in the top 6 like a previous poster said make you feel?

Tedenby has no business playing in the NHL.

Again, coming off shoulder surgery and only got into games mid-season, so he was playing serious catch-up. Coming back from shoulder surgery is tough, let alone surgery on both shoulders. And he shot only 3.7% instead of his usual 8%. If he averaged the same shot rate as last year with WPG over a full season (probable) but shot in his usual range, he would have finished right around 10-15 goals.

His big season with Washington was accomplished mostly at even strength and without playing on a line with Ovechkin or Backstrom or Semin. Used as a 3rd line, and not a checking line, he could be effective.

Volchenkov was an anchor of the best penalty kill in NHL history last year. I don't understand this hostility.

Sykora, OTOH, faded as the year went on and earned his playoff benching. He is done.

Surplus of D and lack of O. I would hate to see Fayne or Greene moved because of the log jam on the blue line.

Butler with Zajac and Kovalchuk could be something. Hell, they turned Nicky Palms into a passable NHLer in the spring of 11. Butler has the wheels to keep up. Just hope he can backcheck.

I think Harrold played really well too especially considering the situation he was put in. He showed a lot of poise and did what he was supposed to do, which if we are honest, might have been more than we expected from him. :giggle:

the FIRST line?!?!

They had Nick Palmieri there a season ago and he was terrible. If Butler fits on the first line, that's the spot for him. And at this point he fits better than anyone else currently on the team.

I wouldn't say he's a scapegoat. He's really susceptible to injury and we have a lot of good D prospects. I was always kind of curious why we signed him in the first place. He's a shot blocking specialist and doesn't Marty get annoyed with shot blocking?

He's a very physical defenseman. That toughness is needed back there. Guys like Greene, Fayne, and Tallinder are going to play good defense, but they won't make life difficult for players like Volchenkov would.

PASSSSSSSS. no thanks, thats not the answer.

Guy had 16 points for Ottawa last year and I am hearing 2 too many votes to put him on our first line

And he had a good year the year before that on Ottawa and he's doing well in Albany. Who else would you put there? Clarkson??

I would rather see Butler on the 3rd line then. Put Clarky for now, and put Henrique on the first when he comes back. Ideally, we'd add a player from outside the Devils, but I don't see much to work with unless we talk trades.

I don't think Clarkson has the hockey sense to work with Kovy and Zajac. You give him a week or so of losing the puck in his skates and falling down and Kovy will probably start hitting him with shots on purpose.

Technically this is what we have or could have easily... which is... not too good on offense imo lol the worst thing is we don't have anyone other than Tedenby that i could see brought up and that could play in the NHL... plus we're starting the season without Henrique and of course Josefson will get injured eventually and some other injuries could happen... but we have some money to spend and i hope Lou gets creative with all our dmen that we could trade. Ideally we'd need a real top 6 RW or 2 lol

another thing is like i said somewhere... i dont see Clarkson and Sykora repeating, i dont see our 4th line producing like in the playoffs... i expect Elias productions to be a little lower, Henrique same or little bit higher... and zajac production is extra from last year or course

im curious to see Larsson now, heard he was getting more comfortable getting the puck up the ice and everything.

17 pts in 31 for Larsson is very encouraging. Considering he was facing top opposition and playing PK

Butler was also battling injuries and put on the fourth line after coming back. He wasnt 100% and still put up 16 points in a 4th line role. If he was healthy and in the top 6 then I would agree but it wasnt the case. When healthy he can be a big time threat, and playing with players like zajac and kovy (who draw attention to themselves) could set him up a lot.
