What is wrong with Elias?

The fact that we have gotten this much productivity out of Elias and it took him until he was 37 to start breaking down is already pretty incredible.  Though 11-12 games is still a little too small of a sample (he could always go on a 10-15 stretch of at least a ppg) he just seems off so far.

I just hope the wheels don't fall completely off as we have another year of him as well.

You guys know the P90X guy is 56 right? Stop being ageists. People can still be in great shape when they're older. It just depends how hard you want to work at it.

Is this a joke?

Even the greatest athletes are pretty much guaranteed to be unable to compete in top pro sports leagues (NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB) by age 40. There's a very rare few that can make it past that, but even then no one makes it past 45. So with Elias being 38, it's guaranteed that his performance will fall off in the next few years, if it isn't already.

That being said, I'll wait until the halfway mark of the season before I decide if that's what is happening already.

good one!

Elias is 38. He isn't slumping, he isn't overweight, he's old. That's what's wrong with him. Using Jagr as an example of someone older is equally dumb.. how many 38 year old players do you know that play like they're in their prime still?

I guess you should cheer for a different team in the NHL.  We have what we have based on decisions of Lou. Do I agree with Lou's decisions absolutely not. But we have what we have, thanks Lou!

I have no idea what you are rambling about.

I am not surprised re: your lack of knowledge. If you don't like the age of the players take it up with Lou, I you think age is a problem with scoring look at Jagr last season. If you hate the Devils, cheer for another team. Cheering for another team is better than wishing cancer on a Devils Player. Did someone say that Dumb doesn't understand Dumb, I guess you qualify,

Yes, every player should be expected to play into his 40's because of Jaromir Jagr and Tony Horton, two genetic freaks of nature; one whom is perhaps the most talented hockey player of the last 20 years. Idiocy level: 5000.

That's one way of looking at it, but at the same time, Lou did sign Elias for 3 years until the age of 40 at $5.5 per. So Lou was expecting some very good hockey at a very old age.

Good point. But I think we all know Lou has been known to give out contracts that end up screwing us when the players reach old age. I am surprised he didn't have Marty signed to a Rolston-esque contract.

Age is just a number to Lou lol

I think realistically we hoped for two good years out of the deal and whatever happened in year three was a bonus.  But now it looks like that deal might wind up being two years too long, not one.

I really think we're all jumping the gun a bit with saying Elias is fading. When he was with Havlat, he was looking pretty good, but he's been without him for a while and has been struggling. I think this is something to revisit at the halfway mark and if he's still only putting up .5ppg, then maybe he is really declining, but it's still pretty early in the season to say he's truly lost it.

That's pretty much all we have with Elias...(blind) hope.  There's just no way to tell without seeing more games...sure, he could bounce back, and God I hope he does, because him being finished wasn't accounted for in this year's plan.  He could also simply be out of gas.  With guys his age, there's just no way to know for sure either way...not yet, anyway.

Still early, things could change, but what's kind of a shame is that Elias' 1000th point could really have an anticlimactic feel to it, if his production is a shell of what it used to be, and the Devils are a complete playoff non-factor.  Always so much nicer to see guys not have to limp their way towards milestones.

Part of the reason that's frustrating is that Elias in his prime could carry any line mate. If he can be productive with a good line at his age, I'd be happy, but even that would show that he's lost a step. In any case, as others have said, small sample size. Also, no matter what, he's given is a ton.

Elias has been an awesome Devil, yet he has defied the odds for a year or so.  Father Time has now caught up with him.   Hopefully he'll reach 40 points this year.   He'll get the milestones of 1000 points and 400 goals.  Then we'll see what happens next year.  Likely it wont be pretty when compared to his past years, probably he'll be a defensive specialist next year.

I think it's way too early to be making claims like this. We've played 14 games. I'm sure he's had other stretches of time where he's struggled to put up points, but he's always bounced back. Like I said earlier, if he still is having issues by the midway point of the season then it might be the time to say he's truly in decline, but until then I think this has to just be looked at as a bad stretch of games.

I actually think Elias will turn his game around.  His skillset doesn't deteriorate with age.  What made him so good over the years was his smarts, hockey sense, and hands.  He had great speed in his early years, but he never had to rely on it.  He still has his hands and hockey sense.  He probably always will until he stops playing.

Elias always needed the right partners with chemistry. The best partners were the A Line.

Strictly looking at point totals for the season, he had his best season with the A-Line, but he's had his 2nd, 3rd, and 4th highest scoring seasons after them. And that doesn't include his run when he came back from his illness. It's safe to say he's been pretty consistent regardless of his line mates.

the thing is a 38 years old Elias shouldn't be supposed to carry this team. A 42 years old Jagr either. It's simply not a logical way to structure your team. You should have young guns in their prime carrying a team, not over the hill vets.

Guess the only logical thing to do is invent a time machine and go back in time to 2005 and 2006 and draft better players.

Good call. Let's go to the young guns in their prime store.

Those players aren't easy to come by. It's almost like you have to fill holes until you come across a young gun in their prime.

I've disagreed with sd before, but he makes a fair point here. If we weren't relying on Elias more than we logically should, we wouldn't be as concerned about a slow, but not embarassing start. Unfortunately, Elias may very well be our most important player next to Schneids.

No the logical thing to do is not letting you're players in their prime walk for nothing. That's the really realistic thing to do which is what 97% of the GMs around the league is doing.
