"The older you get, the more appreciative you become," Elias said. "You sometimes hear stories where players might be happier playing somewhere, but maybe they are miserable.
"Our goal as hockey players is to win the Stanley Cup. I'm 28 and I've played in 100 playoff games. I love it here. I would love to be a Devil forever." ---Patrik Elias

I usually try to stay away from threads like this. I am a very emotional person and situations like this will eat right through me. In the current situation I feel I should show my respect. Death is allways an unpleasent thing, but when it happens to a child at the mere age of 17 it is devastating. My condolences are out to Claudia's family friends or any person she has ever touched in the world. I am truly and deeply saddened and hope the family will get through this rough time. I guess Billy Joel's lyrics are right.....only the good die young.

This is simply horrible news... I consider everyone here friends, and to loose one in such a horrble accident is not fair at such a young age.

My prayers and condolences to those who personally knew her, family and friends alike.

Rest in peace, Claudia. You will be missed by everyone. :(

Seeing Jason post this made me again realize how trivial we can truly be sometimes. It's so unfortunate that something like this brings us together. Some of us bicker about the stupidest of things, and it's just so silly. I know a few of us have our (monumental) differences, but at the end of the day we all share a common bond -- our love for hockey, and our love for this board. Thanks for chiming in, Jason.

Winner of the 2004 Lady Byng Award and the 2003 and 2004 Joe Nieuwendyk award.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"He has no ego," says Lou Lamoriello, general manager of the New Jersey Devils. "I don't think he has a selfish bone in his body. It gets infectious with people around him, but that's Joe. Having him here was something very special."
------------------------------------------------------------------------
And the simple truth is this -- before and after Joe Nieuwendyk, this franchise has not been as good. Yes the same could be said for others, but Nieuwendyk's effect on his team, on his team's best players, on the fans and in the community can only be compared to, well, what Jarome Iginla is doing now in Calgary. In professional hockey, the Devils are that rara avis, the team that is largely unmarked by the self-adoration and individualism prevalent amongst other organizations; the team that shines radiantly in the otherwise somber corporate sphere. Through many personnel changes and tribulations their pervasive, unwavering character and desire for victory have reigned triumphant. Whereas other teams may be alluring, the Devils have the rarest of traits: they are exemplary by nature.

Fear no more the heat o'th'sun,
Nor the furious winter's rages.
Thou thy worldly task has done,
Home art gone and ta'en thy wages.
Golden lads and girls all must,
As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.

Cheers Hells, I'll drink to you at Christmas.

I lost a close friend in September in a car accident. It's never easy, especially for the friends and family, and Claudia's will be in my prayers. God Bless.
