One is legal, the other is not. It's legal to drink beer. It's legal to gamble on line and in casinos. It's not legal to scream out things that offend others in a public place. As a matter of fact, the latter is spelled right out on the backs of the tickets and on Prudential Center's code of conduct. Let me know when drinking beer and playing blackjack at a casino make it there, too.

I mean there's nothing to argue here unless someone is trying to find something to, yet again, hang these guys by a rope. They're businessmen running a business just like John McMullen did when he had TropWorld and Trump as sponsors. Was it wrong to have them as sponsors?

There is nothing illegal about yelling "you suck" in a public place. It is free speech. If you tried to have someone arrested for saying that, you would get laughed at. I can say anything I want that may offend you, but if I say something that entices others to violence, that is where it crosses from free speech to being a hate speech and therefore a crime. Saying you suck does not and never will qualify as hate speech.

However, the Prudential Center is not a public place. At best it is semi-public, and you are subject to the rules and regulations set forth by the team and/or arena management.

They can change the goal song every game...if people want to say you suck during the song, they will find a way to do it and the devils really can't do much to stop it.

You Suck by itself, you're fine.  But if you chant You Suck, and act in a way and start causing a ruckus in a public place, that would be disorderly conduct which is in fact a crime.

you're right, and the more they try to hold people down from doing something...the more they'll rebel and do it even more

Do you actually equate a fan at a hockey game to a patron of a public school or library? That may finally explain why our arena atmosphere is such a joke.

This is the best one yet.

If you walked into Macy's and yelled "you suck" at people walking in and out of there or at the store employees, that's "free speech"? HAHA! Try it if you're that confident. Seriously. Let me know how it goes.

You can not just say anything you want to someone. Do you think this is 1985? Not in this day and age. Lawyers make a living off of this.

The Prudential Center IS a public place.

The building is part to blame for why people might say the atmosphere sucks.  The ceiling is too high, and absorbs much of the sound.  Personally, I don't really notice a difference between this year and last.

i do especially the beginning of last year everyone was just wired from the previous years run.. the first half of last year was pretty great... this year it has nothing to do with the ceiling the crowd is just not as loud and into it, but i cant blame them its been mainly boring hockey

I didnt think drinking in public was legal?

I went by this definition

Semi-public spaces[edit]

A broader meaning of public space or place includes also places where everybody can come if they pay, like a cafétrain, or movie theater. A shop is an example of what is intermediate between the two meanings: everybody can enter and look around without obligation to buy, but activities unrelated to the purpose of the shop are not unlimitedly permitted.

I think it's important to mention the Rock is privately owned, so in essence the Rock is a privately owned public place. If the owners wanted to let people wander off the streets into the bowl for free every day, they could do that. For example, not every event held at the Rock is a pay event nor is it completely closed. STH events, draft day, the Devils Den store and the box office are examples of the public entering without paying albeit on a limited basis.

But, it really doesn't matter. If Harris and Blitzer don't want you doing something in their building, it's their building to make that call. If they are dead set on enforcing the Pru Center Code of Conduct they will. If they think YS violates that in some shape or form, then that's their decision, too.

I can't believe you guys actually believe that the change of yhe goal song had to do with family values. It was changed to limit any sort of bad publicity and more importantly, the ownership can show due diligence in attempting to stop the chant.

The new ownership group buys distressed businesses, if you really think they have high morals, well I don't know what to tell you because they prey on people in vulnerable situations and make decisions that would make most people lose sleep. Partnering with a gambling company doesn't even show on the moral turpitude radar for the corporate world.

Regardless, the high ceiling doesn't help the noise.

You have no idea what you are talking about. If you walked into a Macy's yelling lets go devils or kill you would get the same treatment as yelling you suck. You are talking about demeanor and disturbing the peace. saying you suck loudly and consistently in a public or private space may constitute disturbing the peace, but it surely isn't hate speech or rise to the level where a person could be cited or arrested for it if they said it in a normal tone and manner. And it makes no difference if what i am saying offends you. that is not the standard for what is legal and illegal speech. you have a right to free speech in truly public spaces, like a street or public park, and I hate to tell you this, but Macy's, Walmart, etc are not public spaces. That's why neo nazis can hold vile rallies in public parks, and not inside stores or places like prudential center.

I will tell you what, I will meet you at a bar near the arena, tell you you suck to your face and you can call the Newark police on me and see what happens. I guarantee I will get nothing but a stern talking to, if that. And by the way, I am a lawyer.

I for one dont mind the YS chant either way, and I have no problem with Budweiser or PartyPoker as sponsors

the thing that bothered me throughout this whole thing is how the new owners made up the BS family values thing and said we could vote on the new song while it was pretty clear they were doing whatever they wanted.

Its like peeing in our faces and telling us its raining

and no I dont think they have high morals....they are all about the money. It worries me that they might not give a crap about the team, and we'll see .500 hockey for the next decade.

Its almost as if they think....."who cares about the fans, as long as we get big corporate sponsorship we'll make out like bandits"

Essentially we did the same thing back to them adding you suck to every goal song they tried, specifically the one that was the hand-picked choice.  Nobody 'won' that fight.

And just because they want to get corporate sponsorships, doesn't mean they won't care about the hockey team...or at least let Lou have their checkbook when it's neccesary.

The whole free speech thing is absurd. The 1st amendment prevents the government from infringing upon your free speech. It doesn't apply to private ownership.

SHHHHH...don't go around now and let him know that....
