It's not legal to scream out things that offend others in a public place. As a matter of fact, the latter is spelled right out on the backs of the tickets and on Prudential Center's code of conduct. Let me know when drinking beer and playing blackjack at a casino make it there, too. I mean there's nothing to argue here unless someone is trying to find something to, yet again, hang these guys by a rope. They're businessmen running a business just like John McMullen did when he had TropWorld and Trump as sponsors. Was it wrong to have them as sponsors? There is nothing illegal about yelling "you suck" in a public place. It is free speech. If you tried to have someone arrested for saying that, you would get laughed at. I can say anything I want that may offend you, but if I say something that entices others to violence, that is where it crosses from free speech to being a hate speech and therefore a crime. Saying you suck does not and never will qualify as hate speech. However, the Prudential Center is not a public place. At best it is semi-public, and you are subject to the rules and regulations set forth by the team and/or arena management. Do you actually equate a fan at a hockey game to a patron of a public school or library? That may finally explain why our arena atmosphere is such a joke. I think it's important to mention the Rock is privately owned, so in essence the Rock is a privately owned public place. If the owners wanted to let people wander off the streets into the bowl for free every day, they could do that. For example, not every event held at the Rock is a pay event nor is it completely closed. STH events, draft day, the Devils Den store and the box office are examples of the public entering without paying albeit on a limited basis. But, it really doesn't matter. If Harris and Blitzer don't want you doing something in their building, it's their building to make that call. If they are dead set on enforcing the Pru Center Code of Conduct they will. It was changed to limit any sort of bad publicity and more importantly, the ownership can show due diligence in attempting to stop the chant. The new ownership group buys distressed businesses, if you really think they have high morals, well I don't know what to tell you because they prey on people in vulnerable situations and make decisions that would make most people lose sleep. Partnering with a gambling company doesn't even show on the moral turpitude radar for the corporate world. You are talking about demeanor and disturbing the peace. saying you suck loudly and consistently in a public or private space may constitute disturbing the peace, but it surely isn't hate speech or rise to the level where a person could be cited or arrested for it if they said it in a normal tone and manner. And it makes no difference if what i am saying offends you. that is not the standard for what is legal and illegal speech. you have a right to free speech in truly public spaces, like a street or public park, and I hate to tell you this, but Macy's, Walmart, etc are not public spaces. That's why neo nazis can hold vile rallies in public parks, and not inside stores or places like prudential center. I will tell you what, I will meet you at a bar near the arena, tell you you suck to your face and you can call the Newark police on me and see what happens. Its like peeing in our faces and telling us its raining and no I dont think they have high morals....they are all about the money. It worries me that they might not give a crap about the team, and we'll see .500 hockey for the next decade.
