devilsrule33
Last week I asked “Do you think the Devils are good enough to win the Eastern Conference Finals” Results: No: 59 % (56 votes) Yes: 41% (40 votes) Originally I said I would pose a simple yes or no question each week, but I realized after that there was no point in limiting it to those kind of questions. I’ll try and do these when the Devils have a few off days in a row. This week my question is: If you could start your franchise with either Sidney Crosby or Alexander Ovechkin, who would you choose? Now I can imagine who most of you might take and that probably has to do how this board perceives Crosby. You know…the golden boy who whines all the time. I also would imagine that with Crosby injured and Ovechkin tearing up the league…he might be the sexier pick. Here is the stat breakdown: Crosby: 2005-2006 39 goals, 63 assists, 103 points 2006-2007 36 goals, 84 assists, 120 points 2007-2008 20 goals, 43 assists, 63 points (Adjusted points due to injury: 78 points) Ovechkin: 2005-2006 52 goals, 54 assists, 106 points 2006-2007 46 goals, 46 assists, 92 points 2007-2008 48 goals, 30 assists, 78 points This one is a really tough one. Both players have talent that we haven’t seen in a long time. Ovechkin is a better scorer at this point and Crosby is a better playmaker. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in Crosby’s season before the injury. I really expected him to get closer to 140 points. I have to give credit to Ovechkin because I really didn’t think he would put up comparable numbers to Crosby after his rookie year. I just thought he was more polished and had played at a higher level than Crosby before coming into the NHL (Kind of like how Carmelo Anthony had as good as a rookie season after coming out of college as LeBron James did after coming out of high school...if anyone gets the basketball reference) But he really has taken into a new level this year putting his entire team on his back each night. Originally I picked Alfredsson to win the Hart and I still think he really could as the Sens are 1-10 when he has been out of the lineup over the last two years., but I think I’ll give the edge to Ovechkin now. After thinking long and hard over this…I’m going with Crosby. I think his upside his higher. I think with his style of play (he plays physical but not as physical) will allow him to be healthier over the long run. Crosby also makes everyone around him better. I have said this before and I’ll say it again -- if he didn’t play with such scrubs over the past few years and especially last year I think he could have had 40-50 assists more to his name. The passes he makes are incredible and it allows these crappy 4th line players become 25-30 goal scorers. I’m also banking that his goal scoring will improve and that he’ll become a 45-50 goal scorer soon. The bottom line is whomever you pick, you’ll be in good hands. It’s like choosing between Gretzky and Mario or Bird or Magic (Another basketball reference) It’s going to be fun watching these guys go head-to-head over the next 10+ years. Devils731
I go with Crosby. Does everything hockey related well and has vision that nobody else in the league can match currently...and you throw his vision at his age and it appears to me he is the next generational star. halfsharkalligatorhalfman
I personally think Crosby is better. I bet Ovechkin either wins or comes close to winning because Crosby's hurt right now.
stevestevens
Ovechkin. By far my favorite player not on the Devils. Ovechkin has a tremendous ability to generate offense, passing the puck but more so with his ability to pinpoint shots from the blue line of the slot. He is always in the right place at the right time. Ovechkin also has alot of grit and plays physical, he knows how to handle himself on the ice and will throw back if anyone gives him anything. Eltab213
I voted for Ovechkin, which was based more on character and integrity than skill.
CADevilsFan
I really like Ovechkin, i think he's a fantastic player. However, I would take Crosby because I think he has more longevity than Ovechkin (minus the current state of affairs). Ovie plays hard every night, but as it has been commented here before, he is kind of reckless with his body. How can less votes equal a higher percent of the total? Edited February 14, 2008 by devilsrule33

Triumph
Unfortunately it's Crosby, even though Ovechkin is much more fun to watch out on the ice. But - we haven't seen either with a real team around them.
DevilNurn
Well, to look at things in perspective, it's really close, but I say its Ovechkin. They're both superb hockey players, and they both score goals. Crosby will get tons of points in his career, and I'm sure Ovechkin will hit 500 earlier than most. But I say Ovechkin is a better leader, Crosby is wearing the C and still tends to argue plays that a captain should not argue. Ovechkin, while he doesn't have the greatest English in the league, he's a great face for a franchise with his combination of on-ice talent and off-ice compassion. I say to build a franchise and make it really marketable - especially to non-hockey fans, I go with Ovechkin in a tight one.
Shtikl
Haven't met Ovechkin, but Crosby's a genuine Canadian kid -- modest, kind, patient, and utterly devoted to hockey and his team.
brodeurrocks
Both are a treat to watch. Crosby does some amazing things with the puck and AO combines the rare skills of his offensive talent mixed with brute stretngth. My only concern with Crosby is the high ankle injury. This is a very tough injury to recover from with a high re-injury rate. As they stand today, I would go with Crosby but it is very close. Devs4LIFE
Here's the way I see it, Crosby's hockey sense and knowledge is much much better then Ovechkin's but when it comes to pure skill, Ovechkin all the way.
UConn86
I'd take Crosby, he is an overall better playmaker, and if I were starting a team that is what I would look for. However, I like watching Ovechkin better and generally like him more than Crosby...but for starting a team purposes, I'd take Crosby. thefiestygoat
I'd choose Crosby. He seems to have a more well rounded game. Its amazing how well his hockey sense is at his age and his leadership qualities also impress me. Seems more like the type of guy that can make others around him better than they normally are. Ovechkin is great and if this was about skill, I'd vote for him, but since this is about who you would build a team around, I think Crosby would be the way to go. Devil Fan
Ovechkin, he is much more physical.
NJDevsFireOnIce
Ovechkin. one billion percent
SatansDevils
Alexander Ovechkin without a doubt. He is just a better player all around and should be the face or cover of the NHL. He is more dominant for his team than anyone. Size, strength and just has the raw talent. Crosby is good two but not as good as Ovechkin. Crosby is a finesse player and does not do it all like Ovechkin does.
devils26
Simple. Crosby makes his teammates look like great players, while Ovechkin makes himself look like a great player. Edited February 15, 2008 by devils26
Niaure
Of course I choose Ovechkin. If he would have teammates like Crosby has,his numbers ,especially assists, would be much bigger. Now all team depends only on AO and he's playing, let's say, alone. So it's much harder to make nubers. Also I'd like to mention a passion for the game that AO have. At this piont I could compare him to Ronaldinho. No bad words from him,no dirt only smile and skill. Such players giving not only a results, but also all the beauty of the game and everything we (fans) need. Crosby is another talented and sklled player, but he have no soul as Ovy and has a better team to appear on scoresheet. So this is my opinion
thefiestygoat
How does Crosby have no "soul" or little passion like you suggest? I have never seen him take a shift or game off. I don't think he would have earned the "C" if the coaches felt he was giving anything less than a full effort.
Niaure
I didn't mean he have no 'soul' at all, I mean if compared to AO. Don't get me wrong, Crosby is one of the best players overall in all this decade, especially in his age
DevilinLA
Would love to see the two of them drop the gloves. VS.would play the clip for weeks on end. A.O. is a much grittier player...depends on personal taste and the team around them. A.O. is also a little more diverse role-wise could probably fulfill a wider variety of team roles (not that Sid couldn't do alot)
XxLancerHockeyxX
I think AO is a better player...but Crosby is wayyyyyyyyyyy hotter. =]
