Scott Stevens No Longer on Coaching Staff

It amazes me that people still take what rich chere says at face value. You'd think by now people would realize he's trying to invent his own story rather than just reporting on one.

Chere's been there 30 years, yeah he's a **** stirrer but he's got some sources probably even TG doesn't have.

It's the easiest copout in the world to blame the media...is the story exaggerated?  Probably, most journalists do that especially ones who have become Post-like as Chere has in recent years.  Totally made up?  Sorry I can't buy that at all.  No reporter worth his salt's going to just fabricate stories.

Wow, seeing people's comments on Rich Chere's article is scary. There really is a huge divide in the Devils' fanbase. Is this a consequence of our fanbase growing (in number) and being younger, or....?

People getting angry at Lou and DeBoer for "chasing a Hall of Famer away", and similar comments like that... Honestly, I saw a lot of what I think was Stevens' influence early in the year and did not like what I saw. DeBoer may have ratcheted down Stevens' input toward the latter half of the season and what I saw in our defense was a huge improvement and much better play.

How braindead are some Devils fans to a) take Rich Chere's "story" at face value, and then b) somehow make it reflect on Lou or DeBoer doing a crappy job, by c) suddenly proclaiming Stevens as this incredible assistant coach that we d) should've held on to? Those are 4 thought processes I completely disagree with.

The best is that these same fans will point to John MacLean as the reason for our poor start in 2010-11 (which he was again largely responsible for) but at the same time give Stevens a pass on this.  Stevens hasn't exactly done a great job with the defense and to justify him staying because of what he did as a player is laughable.

Stevens reasons for leaving our fine if true. Not sure why there has to be a huge divide by anyone (not here, but apparently on some comments of an article). You have to love coaching or really need the money to keep doing it. It's a tough job, and if Stevens wanted to be more than an associate, well that's too bad.

I don't know if the Chere's sources are correct, but from a defensive point of view, what has there been not to like? The same people complaining are the ones who probably also kill Deboer for scratching Larsson and Gelinas. I am sure Stevens ideas were for those two to be set free and have the green light do whatever.

The people who comment on articles and Facebook are five steps down in intelligence from the people that post here and there aren't exactly Mensa members posting here either.  But they're the same people that think Marty should be playing over Cory in perpituity because he's Martin Brodeur or that cancel their season tickets over a goal song.  In short, don't take the comments section there as a sign of anything.  It's the same as the rest of the internet, people will write stupid things when they don't have to put their name to it.

Don't buy that Stevens is a prima Donna. He didn't whine to Chere, Chere asked other players. Since everyone played what we can now assume is DeBo's system, doesn't sound like Stevens created a locker room divide. Stevens seems to have left for valid reasons, both professional and personal. Since Albelin was waiting in the wings, this didn't have a negative effect on anything, even if the timing wasn't perfect.

That was not his idea. His idea was that big guys need to be physical and hit.

As I've discussed before, "Some people know how to hit. Some don't. Just 'cause your big doesn't mean you can hit."

sounds like he's willing to come back as soon as deboer is gone.

I kinda got that same vibe. Lou's quote of:  "He'll be back coaching with the Devils.. just not this season."  --just sounds like there's an underlining layer to it. I don't know. Just my opinion.

Prima donna?  Not exactly.

It is tough to humbly take a back seat to a coach, especially when you don't share the same strategy as the coaching staff and you're respected as one of the all-time great defensemen in the NHL.  If you're not on the same page, you amicably say goodbye.  No hard feelings.

Also, good players don't always translate into good coaches.  Just ask Wayne Gretzky.

Isn't Deboer's contract up after this season or did we just extend him? I remember all of the Deboer to Toronto rumors I just forget the details.

Lou doesn't announce the contract terms with coaches.  It isn't even clear whether DeBoer signed an extension this offseason, or if he was already under contract for this season.  People were speculating because most coaches get deals for three years at a time.

Thanks. I think I even remember Lou leaving it just like that too. I think all he said was Pete will be coaching the Devils this season. Like you said we still don't even know what his deal is. I guess it doesn't really matter because Lou can just fire him whenever he wants to anyway.
