Kovalchuk's contract is obviously unbelievable because no one thinks he's going to want to play for $500k when he has tens of millions in the bank. I don't believe it either, nor do I believe it with the other long contracts that have been accepted. Some athletes will play as long as they can, or as long as they think they can win, for love of the game. It's impossible to know when Kovalchuk is 27 whether he'll be one of those players. I hope this ends soon. then why would hossa play for 750,000 when he is 42 or pronger playing for 525,000 when he is also 42. Lou would seriously be playing with fire if this was planned to get in the press conference before an official rejection when he knew it was coming ahead of time. If you were Kovalchuk or Grossman would you have any respect or ever want to deal with an organization that acted in bad faith? If there's even a bit of truth to this, don't be shocked if Kovalchuk walks away and if Grossman never does business with Lou again. Not to mention the fact that every free agent you ever want to sign (ahem Parise) would be very releuctant to signsign with the Devils or play for them a day longer than necessary. firecenter Posted July 21, 2010 Share Posted July 21, 2010 The issue really in all of this, as it compares to the hossa and luongo contracts, is essentially the devils signed hossa to a 7 year contract worth 7 million at the end. This has never been done before, and never will. the lunogo contracts and hossa contracts include 2-3 years of smaller payments, which is not uncommon for nhl players to sign. You'd have to have no intention of retaining him to do that to a guy. If he had anything like that in mind he'd have told Grossman and Ilya - he'd have warned them and probably have had a contingency contract all drafted also with Grossman and Kovalchuk's input. You dont run a guy like that up a flag pole for kicks.... (but then again... maybe Kevin Costner IS Yuri the imbedded KGB agent...)
