Detroit better have improved its drafting the last few years, as of now they haven't drafted a player that's made a significant impact for them on the NHL level since 2005.

 

That's because they have good depth at the NHL level.  Nyquist, Tatar, Smith, DeKeyser, Lashoff all established themselves this year with varying degrees of success.  The Wings can afford to make trades with their prospect depth for someone like Vanek, and still have plenty of young guys around for when their older players can't hack it anymore.
