  1. Fitz did a great job building 2022-23 team and lots of mistakes building 2023-24 team, although some of them you can’t really blame him 1) Meier trade - never quite worked out so far but on paper a move that a GM of a contending team has to make it given an opportunity 2) No Plan B for impeding departing D. Kinda goes back to #1, not resigning Meier would have been waste of assets of the trade while resigning him meant no possibility of resigning either of them. 3) Sharangovich (and a 3rd) for Toffoli this one seems a mistake - one should never trade young for old, already have signed Meier just keep Sharangovich who clearly had a lot of talent, put him in situations to succeed (see Calgary) and let him develop 4) Goalies - tough to say, VV and Schmid seemed kinda fine coming in and we don’t know if Helleybuck was really being seriously explored or not. The reason waiver pickups like Spencer Martin do well in Carolina is because the team is very well structured and one could put Darren Pang in nets if team bears down and starts paying attention to details. 5) Replacement pieces: kinda sucked. Nosek for Boqvist: downgrade, Tierney/whoever for Wood/Tatar -downgrade, etc. Only Colin Miller semi-decent. Boqvist was waivers a few months ago wasn’t being considered as an option to be brought back. 6) MM loss was big unfortunately- Fitz wasn’t to blame of course and nothing can be done to replace his Faceoff % But overall 23-24 team was poorly constructed
  2. If I’m opposing team’s coach it’s so easy to prepare my team to play Devils. Something like this: 1) Just keep the game tight for a bit, they will wilt under pressure, they’ll start running around their D zone and will give us the grade A scoring chances on the silver platter. We won’t even have to work that hard for them just some easy forecheck on the regular basis 2) Their forwards kinda suck too will never be able to score on any semi-decent chances or sustain any offensive pressure all we have to do is pay attention to detail on D and our goalie as long as he’s not literally sleeping will never have any problems seeing any shots since Devils’ forwards are really afraid of coming into the difficult areas. 3) Whatever you do on D you can always keep Siegenthaler open even if you overload one side and let him slide to the slot 4) Tatar is always good for a few giveaways 5) Just be physical against Hughes and Hischier then we’re good
  3. If Devils went off the board in 2017 and got say Heiskenen Shero would have been lynched on this forum. The only thing in question was Nolan vs Nico. I would say this giving Nico C put way too much burden on him. He can’t turn around the franchise by himself like Matthews or McDavid can but it seems like the added pressure totally dragging him down. He can still definitely be very good player but definitely needs wingers of 1). sniper, 2). power forward
  4. If we had drafted Makar and Colorado drafted Smith (different years I know), Makar would have been like Smith and Smith would have been like Makar
  5. 11 games below .500 equaling last season’s final record
  6. You mean 2017-18? The best Devils team in a decade
  7. Everything seems like a bad timing since 2015: 1) The So-so results of the loaded 2015 draft (Lou era still) 2) 1OAs don’t end up being McDavid or Matthews but somehow consensus 3OA - 4 OA(Makar, Heiskenen) becoming stars 3) Schneider falling off the earth exactly at the time things started to look a bit promising (2017-18) 4) All reasonable on paper top 6 for 2nd rounder type of improvements on paper never working out (Johansson, Gusev) 5) Guys drafted further like Boqvist that are highly rated not really becoming anything special
  8. Nowadays once the season starts it’s almost impossible to make any moves to improve the badly constructed teams, the time for moves is almost exclusively 1) Trade deadline 2) Off-season. Fitz has been active in both for 2 years, nevertheless there’s just not enough in top 6 talent in the org even if bottom 6 depth is reasonable. Probably better coaching would help though
  9. How about if this was a high school team and not an NHL team this all would be all nice and cool
  10. Somehow they do play much more composed when Nas is a head coach, I may be in minority but maybe give Nas the rest of the season
  11. Nas is now 21-16 lifetime and a head coach, better than some of the fancy head coaches like Lindy Ruff and John Hynes :)
  12. If coaches aren’t the problem and players can’t execute properly someone is responsible for not properly evaluating players. Like a few years ago Boqvist was a no-miss prospect that Shero specifically said other GMs calling non-stop to inquire about Boqvist and that means something about Boqvist potential. I’m not picking on Boqvist but then how are we to believe Nico is on course for many years of Selke considerations and Hughes + Holtz will terrorize NHL McDavid + Draisatl style
  13. If one is the biggest supporter of Ruff you can’t trade the whole team, look how much better Vancouver playing after firings with the same lineup
  14. Can there be any more epic embarrassment than Lou’s garbage collection of Zach Parise scoring short- handed
