RowdyFan42
If this was posted in the marathon Parise thread or elsewhere, I apologize, but I thought this merited its own topic. Here's the year-by-year breakdown of the Parise contract as reported by CapGeek: LENGTH: 13 YEAR(S) VALUE: $98,000,000 TYPE: STANDARD EXPIRY STATUS: UFASEASON AHL SALARY NHL SALARY P. BONUSES S. BONUS CAP HIT2012-13 $12,000,000 $12,000,000 $0 $10,000,000 $7,538,4622013-14 $12,000,000 $12,000,000 $0 $10,000,000 $7,538,4622014-15 $11,000,000 $11,000,000 $0 $5,000,000 $7,538,4622015-16 $9,000,000 $9,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,4622016-17 $9,000,000 $9,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,4622017-18 $9,000,000 $9,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,4622018-19 $9,000,000 $9,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,4622019-20 $9,000,000 $9,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,4622020-21 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,4622021-22 $6,000,000 $6,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,4622022-23 $2,000,000 $2,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,4622023-24 $1,000,000 $1,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,4622024-25 $1,000,000 $1,000,000 $0 $0 $7,538,462KNOWN CLAUSES (note: if player has been traded, clauses may no longer apply): NMC/NTC Yeah, I'm pretty sure Lou couldn't have matched that, and even if he did, it would have been a bad move. And frankly, I don't like how it drops off at the end. To borrow a Docism, it sounds almost Kovalchukian.
Zubie#8
Ah, cap circumvention 101. Edited July 5, 2012 by Zubie#
SterioDesign
I really don't think that contract is circumventing the "spirit" of the CBA like the one Kovy had... kovy had a few years at 500k or something at the end at an age that 98% of all the players in history never made it to. It was obvious that they were just there to bring that the cap hit. of course those years at the end of Zach's contract are also lower to lower the cap but its really not as bad. David Puddy
The way the rule should work is the lowest year in the contract cannot be lower than a certain percentage of the highest year. (I think 33% would be reasonable... this would mean if the max were $9m, the "cheap" years would still be $3m.) This would completely eliminate this type of BS. David Puddy
of course those years at the end of Zach's contract are also lower to lower the cap but its really not as bad. Yeah but in those years, the cap will be MUCH, MUCH higher than $70m. If not, the league would have a huge problem on its hands. If this keeps up, by that point, the amount of actual money teams are paying to players will be lower than the cap hit, meaning the teams will be making bigger profits, which will lead to the cap going up even more. This is all just badly thought out.

But they should just get rid of long term contracts... it's ridiculous 5-7 years maximum. Of course the players will never agree with that but thats what they should do. Satans Hockey
I have nothing to add other then the fact that seeing that his contract ends in 2025 blows my mind.
Jimmy Leeds
The rumored 7 years $49,000,000 that he supposedly turned down during this year from Lou would have been a tough pill to swallow if that's what he eventually took from Minny. But this? Glad he chose them.
DaneykoIsGod
Am I reading that correctly? Is Zach getting $25M in signing bonus money in the first three years? Edit: Including salary, that'd make his payout over the next three years $22M, $22M, and $16M, respectively. That's absolutely ludicrous. And people thought paying Kovalchuk $11.8M was nuts. Nevermind. Edited July 5, 2012 by DaneykoIsGod
corzman69
Parise makes more than Adrian Peterson of the Vikings. I wonder what the twin city sports brethren thinks of that?

The rumor I heard was that he wanted $24 Mil with $12 upfront in case things go wonky with the CBA. One of the only rumors that basically ended up being true.
