New Jersey Devils(hard scrub): GM Lou Lamoriello probably had contingency plans in his mind for what he wanted to do with his team this summer regardless of what happened in the first round. But with Jacques Lemaire stepping down, Lamoriello has the opportunity again to drastically alter the look of his team. If he wants to continue its long, defensive tradition, he could turn to defensive-minded Ken Hitchcock. If he wants to change its style, he can look elsewhere. The Devils had a strong regular season, but Lemaire's departure and Philadelphia's regular-season and playoff dominance vs. the Devils should give Lamoriello food for thought. Is it time for a minor shakeup? Marty Brodeur is 38, and it's unknown how much longer he will play. Paul Martin is an unrestricted free agent, and if he leaves, it would leave a big hole to fill. The Buffalo Sabres, Nashville Predators, Phoenix Coyotes and Washington Capitals fall under the "tinker" category, the Colorado Avalanche and LA Kings under "stay the course", and the New Jersey Devils and Ottawa Senators under "hard scrub". SPECTOR'S NOTE: Agreed. The Avs and Kings have rebuilt primarily from within and should allow their young core to develop. The Sabres, Predators, Coyotes and Capitals could be two or three key players from improvement, but the Devils and Senators have too much salary wrapped up in too few players and if they hope to either retain key players or bring in additional depth they'll need to shed salary.
