sorry eric, there is NO way 44 is being retired. I think 4, 3, 30, 27, 15, and 22 are above him in the rankings

as for us being too young, I think you'll find that many people in this forum are at least as old as you are and have been able to follow the team closely since it arrived here

I'd retire 31 before 44 :D

This is always one of my favorite topics (retiring numbers, not Sergei Brylin, LOL!).

It's an honor that great players should get, and Ken Daneyko ain't rafter material folks. Many of you let your hearts speak too loudly. I agree that Daneyko personifies what the Devils are all about (playing your role, toughness), but is that, plus the fact that he was lucky enough to play on one team for his whole career, enough to get IMMORTALIZED? No, no, no.

#4 should be the first Devils number to be retired, and as far as I'm concerned, the only one until Marty hangs' em up.

Correct me if I am wrong RE: Johnny Mac:

I remember Jacques wanted him to focus more on his defense.

With Johnny Mac being in the last year of his contract (it seemed to me) he was more worried more about putting up points so he can get more $ on the open market than making adjustments to help improve the team. I remember him going public over his role rather than talking to Lou/Jacques in private. Which ultimately had him banished to San Jose and then the Ranger$.

Am I wrong?

We've debated this 1,000 times before, but why not 1,000 times more...

MacLean felt that he was being treated like sh!t by the organization. He wasn't getting any PP time and his ice time over-all was being cut. He felt that he could contribute more, but the coaching staff wouldn't let him.

This wasn't about money. This was about being able to contribute. He had always been a leader and you don't lead from the bench. He told Lou he was unhappy. Lou said he would see what he could do. Time passed and nothing was done. John then told Lou directly that he wanted more ice time or a trade. Time passed and nothing was done. Then John went public and forced the issue.

Fans seem to condemn a player for being dis-loyal even when they are being treated poorly. I can't tell you how many people have said "He was under contract and therefore should have done whatever role the coaching staff wanted from him." But if I sign a contract with someone to write a software program over the next 6 months and I show up the first day and they hand me a mop, I'm not going to stick around.

I didn't so much mind the whole trade and going to San Jose thing, but then he voluntarily signed with the Rangers after that season. That's when I got annoyed. At least with Driver, he was up front about wanting to stay in the area and wanting a no-trade (which the Devils wouldn't give and the Rangers did)
